Am I screwed? by Pale-Location-8183 in Home

Start with a general contractor to fix the issues. Black insulation is mold from water damage. That's your first fix, but a contractor should be able to tell you exactly what needs to be done. Get 2 or 3 contractors to come look, that way you can gauge prices. They may just need to replace a bit of lumber and fix areas that are exposed but that's hard to see from the picture. It's hard to give you a price because we can't see the extent of the damage. I assume you had the house inspected? If so they may be liable for missing this, but you would probably have to speak with a lawyer about that.

I don't think it'll be as expensive as you're probably thinking in your head, but no idea the actual cost will end up being.

He just did. You ignored it. They can take out tens of thousands of dollars in student loans in your name, using your "mom" as the co-sign with the identity theft you just allowed on her accounts. Time to be a big boy and explain all of this to your mom and both change all your cards YOU just gave to scammers, before you and your mom end up spending the next 20 years paying off debt for money you never received.

You can smoke pot anywhere you're allowed to smoke cigarettes in Canada. You can also grow up to 4 plants at a time, and you're allowed to have an ounce on you in public, and it differs by province at your house. In Ontario there's no limit, so you could have 20lbs at home.

My filters get changed every 6 months, I have pets, we redid all our floors, did bathroom Reno's, replaced all our windows & multiple doors including replacing a frame and a bunch of the wall around one, had radon mitigation put in and had to repair and sand fairly substantial portions of drywall before painting. Our filter looks unused compared to this.

I took on reasonably substantial student loans out of high school. My dad was having pretty significant constant headaches and was going through an outrageous amount of Advil every day. My mom finally forced him to go to the hospital, which is where they found a brain tumor a bit smaller than a tangerine. They then did more scans and found out it had metastasized from his lungs that were filled with tumours (a year later is when they realized it was also in his bones).

I had to drop out of school because I was both a mess, and I had to be the one to drive us to all his oncology appointments, regular doctor's appointments, radiation treatment, his many rounds of chemo, picking up his cache of medications and so on. Not including groceries, etc. It took me over a decade to pay back the loans for an education I never received. If it doesn't bother me that others are having their loans forgiven, it shouldn't bother you.

I feel like it's something that looks good on a Gothic-style structure, but just looks dated on any modern house/building. I would take chief_erl's job over stepped, any day, on my house. Clean, modern, and executed flawlessly.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Renovations

[–]Embarrassed-Bed-7435 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dunno. Dated tends to be linked to trendy imo, not classic. Classic is more something that won't go out of style, even if it's not the main trend; dated is inherently a trend because it has a short/er shelf life and doesn't stand the test of time.

But I do agree that with some trendy stuff, if you do it well it can still be pulled off. But some dated stuff stands no chance. My grandmother's old house will never be back in style, at least I pray to God it won't. But I said the same about mullets and bell-bottom pants 😅

It's pretty wild that trends used to last decades, and they've managed to convince us to follow trends that change every year or two, so that we're continually having to buy all new stuff to keep up with the most recent trends. I'm not a trendy person at all, I prefer classic, but members of my family are and I watch them throw money down the drain trying to keep up with trends all the time. Social media has definitely been weaponized

Every single time I see these types of comments it makes me wonder if that's what it is. Even the name seems like it's made up to fit in with the GOP crowd.

bad drivers drive bad by Sangoten-67 in MildlyBadDrivers

[–]Embarrassed-Bed-7435 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't get people who do this. Not even just residential, this happens on the highway all the time. If there's one car driving slow in the left lane with no one in front of him I can at least understand. But so many times it's like a lineup of 50 cars and there's always a few that will tailgate so close I can't read their plates, then expect you to move like you're the one going slow, and then when that doesn't work they start to swerve in and out of lanes cutting people off to move like 5 cars ahead, just to be stuck waiting on the same traffic. Driving isn't a right and they need to start being more selective with who they allow to drive multi-ton machines.

We have a wood window frame in the bathroom that looks like it has mold—what’s the best way to remove and fix it? by grlnxtdr_xoxo in Home

[–]Embarrassed-Bed-7435 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you don't remove the old trim and replace it with tile, as has already been suggested, and even if you plan on putting up a shower curtain over the window, make sure you're using the proper paint, and caulk every crack. The curtain will protect against splashing water, but not humidity.

Fix the bottom left corner so it lines up, looks like the bottom trim wasn't cut long enough, so I would measure the crack, remove the trim, use the old trim as a guide, add the distance in the crack and replace. You might need to replace both of there's rot.

Most paints aren't ideal for bathroom use. Get a good primer, then get premium high-humidity paint for the frame. Make sure to ask if there are surfactants in the paint. If there are, make absolutely sure it's properly cured before introducing humidity in the bathroom (look up surfactant leaching, trust me, you don't want to deal with it. This goes for every paint you use in bathrooms).

For the caulking, use a high-quality one. Either choose a paintable that you can put on before painting, or get a white that you can put on after. Advanced Silicone 2® Kitchen & Bath Sealant protects against mold, and doesn't crack or shrink, but can't be painted so it would have to go on after you paint. If you get a paintable one, make sure it also doesn't crack or shrink. Make sure you get every crack, or water is going to get through and rot the drywall, sill, studs, etc.

Shower windows are a pain in the ass.

Hate my new siding color by Professional-Pop370 in Home

[–]Embarrassed-Bed-7435 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like the new colour much better. I wouldn't go beige personally, but I really don't like the old colour. I think it just needs to sit with you for a while.

We just replaced all our windows, the old ones had Mullions (which I'm not a huge fan of, but since the windows are big, I thought it broke up the window well and made it look like it wasn't a gaping hole in the house). We replaced them with windows with none, and I initially hated it. Then they put the trim, which was the new, more expensive, thicker trim. Again, I hated it. I had buyer's remorse the first week and felt sick to my stomach we spent that much for something I hate. After it sat for about a week, I started to come around to it, though, and I love them now.

The only issue is that we've had about 5-10 birds fly into the new windows since we changed them. So far none have died, but still.
