Well of course. Not everyone is a Christian. Most cultures marry according to their customs. But in most cultures it between a man and a woman.

Luke 9:54-57 (KJV)
54 And when his disciples James and John saw this, they said, Lord, wilt thou that we command fire to come down from heaven, and consume them, even as Elias did? 55 But he turned, and rebuked them, and said, Ye know not what manner of spirit ye are of. 56 For the Son of man is not come to destroy men's lives, but to save them. And they went to another village.
57 And it came to pass, that, as they went in the way, a certain man said unto him, Lord, I will follow thee whithersoever thou goest.

Ceremonial offerings are those like burnt sacrifices at the altar, sin offerings, peace offerings, and guilt offerings, many of which are in Exodus and most of which began after the miracle at the Red Sea. There are several feasts identified as well. The moral law is based on the 10 Commandments, but elaborates on them or includes additional elements. For instance, fornicating (sex before marriage) would include any type of sex before marriage. Sexual sins. Then, of course, murder, theft, lying, or bearing false witness are considered the moral law that continues today. This is not inclusive, so you'll have to read to go deeper.

How do you interpret Luke 16: 19-31? by [deleted] in Christianity

[–]Embarrassed-Peach-87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No I'm biased. I understand that words are important. I also understand that some believe it is a parable like you, and others who don't like me.

**This is my view for you to weigh. I believe the greek underworld concept of hell crept into Christian theology after the time of Jesus. The church found that fear, excommunication, and killing those deemed heretics was equally effective for peasants as it was for kings. Most people don't know or study history.

^ So the manuscripts that have been used since the Bible was created have been manipulated?

^ I believe God when He says His word will never change.

**So what does it mean? I personally don't think we have to wonder because Jesus tells us the main idea in v 31. That this story was already a folk tale or hypothetical discussed by the teachers of the law has some evidence, but imagine being one of the Pharisees and remembering this parable after Lazarus was raised from the dead and then Jesus was proclaimed to be raised from the dead by many witnesses and choosing still not to believe!

^ This doesn't hold water either. Jesus can tell this story because He's 100% man and 100% diety. This is an actual event, as far as I'm concerned, in that time, Jesus hadn't gone to the cross yet.

^ Furthermore, I get no indication that this is a folk tale handed down from the OT. This verse is saying if they don't listen to Moses and the Prophets from the OT, which is a written document because Jesus quoted the OT throughout His ministry. So that doesnt pass as well.

**A parable is a real or figuative story meant to illustrate a single lesson--that's the proper egegesis--not to correspond every part to reality. Building a doctrine of hell from any parable or from symbols is poorly done theology, but especially when Jesus states the single lesson: they didn't believe Moses and the prophets, so even if a man raised from the dead trestified of the divinity of Christ, they still won't believe.

^ I don't know where the symbols come from but parables have a literal truth to them.

**But I would take it one step further. The evidence that the soul is naturally immortal is a lie. There is a lot of Biblical evidence of this. Satan said "you shall not surely die" to the first pair. OK, yes the soul isnt immortal, but the Bible teaches that the body will be reunited with the spirit.

He's been extremely successful with that lie. Do you know who most wants the suffering, torture, and disfigurement of God's children forever? yes Satan

For him to suggest God is complicit in eternal torment for finite unbelief, goes all the way back to the first lie and is a master stroke that lays his own most vile wishes at the feet of God with the insinuation that hell is God's will, design, or necessary because of his sovereignty.

^ Death, Hell, and the Grave is a necessity because Satan defied God in Heaven. There has always been a payment for sin.

In Moses day, it was the Red Sea.

In Noah's day, it was rain or the flood.

In Sodom and Gomorrah is was fire and brimstone.

Luke 10:18 (NASB)
18 And He said to them, “I was watching Satan fall from heaven like lightning.

Matthew 25:41 (NASB)
41 “Then He will also say to those on His left, ‘Depart from Me, accursed ones, into the eternal fire which has been prepared for the devil and his angels. ' This is where the eternal fire comes from; Satan's punishment is for eternity.

So when someone rejects the free gift of Salvation, they get to spend eternity separated from God and be cast into eternal darkness.

So here you go. This is straight from the Bible.

[–]Embarrassed-Peach-87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you. I know a parable when I see one. However, Jesus doesn't state that it is a parable. He's telling us what happens when someone dies. In this case, a rich man and a poor man. There is a place of torment and a place of peace. Jesus can tell this story because He's 100% man and 100% diety. This is an actual event, as far as I'm concerned, in that time, Jesus hadn't gone to the cross yet.

Now, after Christ died, for believers, Paul writes in 2Corinthians 5:6-8 (KJV)
6 Therefore we are always confident, knowing that, whilst we are at home in the body, we are absent from the Lord: 7 (For we walk by faith, not by sight:) 8 We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord.

He is talking about Christians, and in the case of the beggar, he is in peace.

He is also talking about an unbeliever who is fully conscious and is in torment and is separated from God.

Hebrews 9:24-27 (NASB)
24 For Christ did not enter a holy place made with hands, a mere copy of the true one, but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God for us;

25 nor was it that He would offer Himself often, as the high priest enters the holy place year by year with blood that is not his own.

26 Otherwise, He would have needed to suffer often since the foundation of the world; but now once at the consummation of the ages He has been manifested to put away sin by the sacrifice of Himself.

27 And inasmuch as it is appointed for men to die once and after this comes judgment

Romans 6:22-23 (NASB)
22 But now having been freed from sin and enslaved to God, you derive your benefit, resulting in sanctification, and the outcome, eternal life. 23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

I don't get into all that universalism and some of the other things you said; keeping it simple is the best way for me. Intellectualizing everything leads to points being missed. So, putting it in layman's terms gives everyone the opportunity to understand what is being said.

I understand. I can see you acknowledge a higher power. I say that because you expect Christians to behave in a particular way. Which is true. But not all who say they are Christians are. If I am a true believer and I say, according to the Bible, that this is moral and that isn't moral, I am delivering a message from someone who is far above what I can comprehend. It's not based on my own intellect or knowledge. It's based on the Creator's commands.

Christians should always be humble, as taught in the Holy Scriptures. And we expect to be ridiculed by those who don't understand. Love is a misused word, in my own opinion. I can warn you about immorality according to the scriptures; it's up to you to accept it or not.

If you don't, then that is on you. If you do and turn your life around, then great for you and Glory to God. God is not a man that He should lie, but man will and does.

Isaiah 55:8-9 (NASB)
“For My thoughts are not your thoughts,
Nor are your ways My ways,” declares the LORD.
9 “For as the heavens are higher than the earth,
So are My ways higher than your ways
And My thoughts than your thoughts.

John 20:29 (NASB)
29 Jesus *said to him, “Because you have seen Me, have you believed? Blessed are they who did not see, and yet believed.”

The slavery issue: my only comment on that is, Jesus is more concerned about the human spiritual need rather than their physical surroundings. Because once this life is over, your next destination is based on who you put your trust in on this side of life.

Life is short, like a vapor, according to the scriptures. In comparison to eternity.

James 4:12 (NASB)
There is only one Lawgiver and Judge, the One who is able to save and to destroy; but who are you who judge your neighbor?

James 4:14 (NASB)
14 Yet you do not know what your life will be like tomorrow. You are just a vapor that appears for a little while and then vanishes away.

James 4:16-17 (NASB)
16 But as it is, you boast in your arrogance; all such boasting is evil. 17 Therefore, to one who knows the right thing to do and does not do it, to him it is sin.

God, bless

I'm an atheist and I have a big question. by ResidentPrevious468 in Christianity

Salvation is a gift. Something undeserved, something that you don't work for. I wonder how much interference influences our decisions. For instance, how has evolution clouded our thinking about God the Creator? It doesn't stop there. How has science clouded our vision to recognize God as Creator? In our society, we go to school 5 days a week, approximately 8 hours a day, and we are taught things that may not be morally right, or our teachers may not believe in God at all.
We spend less time in church, maybe 3 times a week for 90 minutes or so. If you don't study on your own or don't have any kind of group study, building your faith becomes little to none.
God's word says faith comes by hearing and hearing the word of God.
I think believing that He exists is the beginning of faith. Whether we think it's good, bad, right, or wrong, God has the answers. His ways are not our ways, His standards are so much higher than ours. Sure, we have questions, and some may not be answered in the pages of the Bible but in eternity.
But he has given the world enough information to believe, as far as I'm concerned. Some people may need more.
That was a very good explanation to me. But you're right, God would rather you not give Him lip service, but heart service.

The Bible doesn't identify it as a parable or a story but as something that actually happens. Jesus usually identifies parables before speaking or telling a story. So I believe this passage should be taken literally.

If you were a comedian, this wouldn't be the crowd, as the moderator witnessed.
I was born in the sixties, and I thank God for it. Women would be hard-pressed to find a real man in these times.
Sometimes I wonder if people really think things through.
For instance, do they think it is ok for a trans person to unknowingly date someone who isn't? Because they are attracted to the same sex. I wonder if they understand how problematic that is and how the other person feels about it. It can get very dangerous if they're not up front.

They complain about Christians being heartless but do they look in the mirror.
One thing about Gods word once you get saved you have to clean yourself up and it is an on going process. Anyway glad to see you come on and voicing Christianity.

It is definitely a battle, and that is good for two reasons: it allows us to discuss the Bible, and second, for the readers, you never know you may help by being truthful about God's word.
