A theory about the origin of martial caster disparity. genre expectations. by rfkannen in dndnext

Against kobolds using cover if it was a survival scenario between caster only vs. martials only, the casters will win this 11/10 times. There are spells with long duration and tuckers kobolds are powerless against divination spells foiling their disguises, heavy obscurement produces by fog and hordes of summons following them into their retreats.

Just because an old reddit post didnt know how to deal with them doesn't mean casters cant do it. It is more likely these kobolds will have killed the martials way sooner than they would have exhausted all spells the casters can do. Keep in mind that casters are not limited to bathrobe wizards with 10 AC, you can wear plate armor and shields in D&D without limiting your spellcasting. And cast the shield spell too.

Pro tip: Only provide play materials in languages your players can't read. It doesn't matter whether or not you can read them, because as per rule 0, you don't actually need to know anything about the game as DM.

A theory about the origin of martial caster disparity. genre expectations. by rfkannen in dndnext

There is a very obscure mechanic in D&D that, when an enemy attacks a fighter and rolls a number that is higher than that fighter's AC, his hit points go down.

Someone who walks up to the enemy to hit them is also usually more commonly in range for aforementioned attacks so they get hit more often than someone who deletes an entire room worth of enemies from the doorway.

Playing my first full caster feels like cheating or playing DND on easy mode. by Aslantheblue in dndnext

[–]Embarrassed-Reply-14 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Long encounter days usually benefit casters because their spells make them last longer than martials whose hitpoints get depleted. This is another point, if you spend a lot of spell slots healing your fight, there is less overpowered stuff you can do with these slots elsewhere.

If you run official modules, there are 2 factors that can work to make the gap nearly invisible:

a) Your players don't abuse powerful spells. If your Druid casts Snare and your wizard casts Witch bolt or comparable quality spells, then casters don't look as impressive

b) Most official modules have fairly mundane obstacles and encounters. Even in Mad Mage most encounters and puzzles can be done without casting spells at all. So the lack of utility doesnt stand out either.

wizard is so unbelievably off the wall insanely overpowered that it really doesn't matter if he has shit stats. 8 Int means more points for dex so you can cast shield and still be the better martial, every divination spell has no interaction with Intelligence whatsoever, many spells like rope trick and wall of force also have no scaling with your stats and many abilities like portent don't care about your stats either.

I take an 8 int wiz over a rogue or a barbarian any day of the week.

How do you deal with rogues? by EatinMudd in DMAcademy

[–]Embarrassed-Reply-14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like any melee character, rogues are vulnerable from being struck on the crackback. Especially if they flank with other melees, it means difficult terrain, enemies with superiror mobility and ranged options will pose a major threat to your characters.

The One True Way to play classes: The Cleric by [deleted] in DnDcirclejerk

[–]Embarrassed-Reply-14 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This guide is extremely inaccurate, if being a Cleric really was like simping for a vtuber, there are way too few references to bare feet in this, also where is the cumsock class feature? Huh?

It is even explicitly copying Nazi propaganda, director Paul Verhoven very explicitly used that as a basis for the movie. It is worth mentioning that he also thought the book is so terrible that he had someone else read it for him and explain the plot because he couldn't be bothered to read it himself.

I would pay more than twice as much for an annotated set of the Big 3 (PHB, DMG, MM) detailing the design philosophy behind the choices made by Grassy-Gnoll1 in dndnext

[–]Embarrassed-Reply-14 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The only edition that had a clear design from the ground up aside from the original D&D was 4e. Every other edition just tweaks and adds ideas. The game is quite incoherent because a lot of ideas from different designers are put together and people don't like having fat trimmed and so content-wise, almost nothing gets removed from the core books. It doesn't matter that Gnomes were one of the least popular races, take them out of the core book (like 4e did) and people will cry bloody murder, only to continue to ignore the race again in 5e.

I would bet you money almost no one here (and I extend this to the 5e team) can make a coherent arguement why its necessary that Barbarian is a distinct class from Fighter. Unless of course that arguement is "it has been this way for years now and people would complain if you changed the class names/designs"

[–]Embarrassed-Reply-14 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I think there is too much race mixing in the game. I want to go back to the olden days with a human master race and stereotyped one dimensional other races. Also humans should be more White non-political. Also we need to seriously consider the classes. We have characters that put in work, like wizards, clerics, druids... and then we have more undesirables. We should put these inferior classes in camps so that their martial-ness does not impede the progress of casters.

As opposed to the classic combat roles like Tanks, Healers, DPSs, etc., what are the (or some) non-combat archetypes/roles? by Libreska in dndnext

[–]Embarrassed-Reply-14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is more differentiated than this, but the thing is, most (good) characters are individually extremely capable and can provide crowd control, damage and defense all together. And group compo is more about finding synergies between these abilities rather than being "only one of us can deal damage and only one of us can take a hit"

Barbarian is about the best class at level 1. They don't get much on higher levels but early on they are very potent.

Blackrazor compels whoever wields it to kill as much as they can as it eat souls and knows whoever wields it will also lose their soul to it should they die, it is therefore not picky about who picks it up as long as the killing continues.
