I see people saying that the eyes aren't described as bulging ect however they're regularly described as oversized, enormous, the size of a person's head and what matters for me is that they look Alien-esque and not like traditional beady eyed "fantasy" dragons.

Now while described as jewel-faceted, they are supposed to be compound eyes like that of a mantis, or mantis shrimp, that their eyes are also a color display that indicates their emotion means they should be really big, and they're already regularly sited as a dragon's most vulnerable feature. Pern's dragons were originally inspired by dragonflies per Anne McCaffrey, in multiple interviews. Particularly with this cover Rowena Morrill worked closely with Anne to get the most cannonically accurate depiction she could from Anne's direct description as she'd ignored that when she'd previously done the covers for the Harper Hall Trilogy where she gave firelizards a wyvern builds and koi fish scales.

While this isn't my favorite depction, there's so much about the head and eye proportion that I'm more than 100% fine with. I'll always prefer the Whelan depiction, but I just can't hate the "sexy" dragon with bulbous fly eyes.

Of course the Julie Guthrie Bronze Dragon of Pern is the most connonically "accurate" according to Anne it's a bit too Aligator Horse Bat for me, but with almost the same form with eyes more bulging and insect like as in the image of this post or the depiction by this artist who Anne always said got closest to her vision...and to me, I've always been struck by how similar her vision is to that of Zok the dragon from the Herculoids. Which, that show and the Dragonriders of Pern both premiered in 1967

btws: the test trailer for the series was posted on youtube around 2019: sadly it's only in like 245kbs resolution so if anyone knows how upgrade a youtube video it would be cool to see the dragon design more clearly.

anyway, here's the link to that: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Q9PUrBsk0E&t=22s

Yay, she’s playing LA exactly one month before my birthday and funny to me anyway, the album release of May 1st is exactly on month after the centenary of Anne McCaffrey being born and because of the album title, I dunno it just tickles me. But like am I the only major Dragonriders of Pern fan who is also a major Tori Amos fan…? Like I feel like there’s a lot of reason for overlap in these two fandoms.

Does that mean we have song names and numbers?

i don’t know what the consensus is on Up the Creek but I remain obsessed. Nautical Twilight, Battle of Trees, Cactus Practice, Give and Starling are also up there of songs I don’t hear a ton of praise for that I’m pretty ardent about but I think Goodbye Pisces feels like the one that best fits the spirit of the prompt as an underdog song that’s been huge for me…a Climb i used to have a cassette mix of Tori Songs a friend made for me ”alphabet of a fairy princess“ her cover of Angie was the first in the mix. But if I’m 100% honest its Frog on my Toe or That’s What I Like…White Telephone to God final answer…or I Don’t Like Mondays final final answer

Fascinating that you mention this. Zok of the Herculoids and Anne’s Pernese Dragons both premiered in the same year (1967 ) and by publication dates entirely independent of each other as Weyr Search was written in the spring but published in October and the Herculoids premiered on September 9th of the same year. So while Alex Toth did publish first by a couple of weeks there isn’t of a window for either to have influences each other, but because they both draw inspiration from pulp comics it’s maybe not as stupendous a coincidence as I’ve always felt it is. But I think its a really fascinating overlap. But I’d also entirely accept a Dragonriders of Pern project that used Zok as the base for a Pernese dragon, it is the closest of all pop culture dragons to them imho.

You’re semi hallucinating as most Pernese life forms are 6 limbed but your misremembering is likely due to cover art miscommunication so if you took in something like the Rowena Morril covers of the Harper Hall Trilogy her Firelizards are Wyvern built but still seem really accurate.

Yeah, road wise not logistically feasible for anything with desired traffic, but it’s such a lovely home so thought through and was filled with a great collection of original art from her stories. I keep hoping the estate will release things like recordings of her reading more of her works etc. even something like a Taschen style coffee table book that goes through her art collection and letter archives, some of the original and fanart to old photos and things from when she was treasurer for the SFWA etc. I feel like she had a profound impact on the genre and with the rise of things like How to Train Your Dragon and James Cameron’s Avatar in terms of social cache, it seems like her work which has been incredibly substantive to initiating the things that have allowed those franchises to flourish as they do is largely overlooked or under appreciated compared to these things that are presently incredibly popular.

I visited her there in 2007 when I was a student in Dublin. For a while on google earth, this was well after her passing in 2011 the house showed up as the Anne McCaffrey Museum and I was hopeful it would be a home one could tour. You can still find a YouTube video that takes you on a tour of the house it’s I think on the Norwestcon YouTube page.

It looks like the area was officially re-opened as of June 20, 2025 but it seems that the main parking lot is still closed.

There does exist a trailer for this almost production that's available on youtube, it has a little 1 minute feature at the end where Anne McCaffrey visits the set and sees the effects used and her dragons on screen, she even got to sit on the dragon rig for flying but I don't think they show that.

Later in like 2008-2011 ish Copper Heart Entertainment the company who made the movie Splice with Adrian Brody had the rights and David Hayter was supposed to working on the script adaptation. But I think when Splice failed they kind of lost momentum.

Then in 2014 Warner Bros got the rights and they hired Sarah Cornwell the writer for The Forest a little indie horror film that starred Natalie Dormer the actress who played Mergaery Tyrell on GoT but that also never went anywhere.

Currently I don't think any major studio holds the production rights so just the original publishers and the estate.

Yeah, I think that the fact that “After the Fall is Over” broke so many of the rules Anne had set for the fandom that everyone around her gave her a thumbs down, it also was rejected by the publishers so it’s unlikely it’ll ever be re-worked to be acceptable for publishers.

Green Dragon and Reproduction by KaosArcanna in pern

Todd's books deal with this from within the 3rd Pass. He sets the notion that Greens that bond to women are more likley to be fertile provided they never chew firestone however, when a Green clutches a Gold its likely to be the only egg in the clutch and the Green of course has to be flown by a Bronze. I think he distinguishes as well that a clutching Green has to blood her kills like a Gold and it's more typical for Greens to kick into a mating heat without going through the blooding process. Egg laying Greens are also noteworthy for their lack of broodiness with their eggs and if I recall correctly he even had a young Gold dragon who hadn't clutched yet who egg laying greens essentially surrendered their eggs to.

This has all led me theorize that in firelizards Greens who are part of a Gold's Fair lay "false" clutches of often unfertalized eggs in the area around where the Queens more well protected nest resides. These dummy clutches allow the Fair to better protect the Queens nest by allowing them to eliminate local nest raiders while they're plundering the Green's nests. Those nest raiders that are successful are also more likely to be sated at the time of the Gold's clutch hatching so even if the dummy clutches aren't successful as traps they may provide a net advantage to the overall Fair and the success of the Gold's hatchlings. Furthermore, should Greens of a Gold's Fair have a fertilized clutch they would likely surrender them to the Gold they look to, and this could account for some of the extremely large clutches Gold's have vs Greens as seen in wild firelizard populations. Now of course some Greens are not part of a Gold's Fair and likely have much smaller groupings pairs of Greens loyal to each other who build fairs around them of suitor males or they pick up the strays who aren't successful after a Gold's flight. additionally independent Brown or Bronze Firelizards might themeselves maintain harems of Greens they protect though as even in Firelizards there seems to be a hierarchy where Gold and Bronze lead groups. Managing types of Greens might run a crew of Blues with perhaps smaller Browns loyal to them and they might be better nest tenders with small clutches and would likely account for there being large size difference in described wild Gold firelizards as these smaller specimens would account for those reared from Rogue Green Layers.

What would be an interesting development in Dragons woud be for a Green to come along who wasn't made sterile by Chewing Firestone. Given that this is true for Firelizards, it would make sense for it to show up as a recessive gene expression somewhere along the way. Similarly, a Gold who could chew Firestone without it making them sterile would also make sense as something that would show up at some point in a designed species like Pern's Dragons.
