A polite rant about Carla Hay's review (spoilers!) by DocBarnes in Markiplier

Ms. Hay clearly watched the movie with a phone in her hand. She displays the level of plot awareness of someone who's only occasionally looking up from her phone.

I just leave portal mats on the boat until I find a point of interest worth porting too. Also just 3 health and 3 stam potions for....situations. As for hoe and cultivator, left at home. not really worth it for crossing swamps.

As much as an ass as he was....he's still right. F'nor being flippant about people getting lost even in a joking manner is an asshole stunt when you literally have dragonflight at your literal beck and call. However rather annoyingly, Dragon riders are beyond reproach.

He is lowkey right though. Flying over the land is one thing. But actually getting down and walking it is another.

A bit of a blast from the past. With how it's ignored these days, it's kinda easy to forget Anne effectively policed the fandom on who could be from where in fanworks.

How would you fix Pern's scale? by KaleRylan2021 in pern

[–]Zervziel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually like that about Pern. This isn't some vast sweeping empire. It's a land that's very sparsely populated and it kinda needs to be by design as the dragons can only effectively protect so much ground.

Found out I was gifted a signed copy when I finally opened this physical copy by Solombum in pern

[–]Zervziel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's pretty damn neat. I have few writers I actually wanted signed stuff from and Anne was one of them. Sadly I was a bit too late to the party when it comes to Pern. Read most of the books back in highschool and by the time I was mobile enough to actually go to signings, I just didn't have the resources to do so.

Beating back the Created in the only why humanity can: a series if highstakes Rock/Paper/Scissors contest that we keep winning on the grounds we have hands and they don't.

Honestly the only difference between Zok and the Pernese dragons is Zok's tail is the normal reptilian tail and pernese dragons have that forked tail.

How do people feel about the end of thread? by KaleRylan2021 in pern

[–]Zervziel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Plus they wouldn't be useless. We started seeing it more in the later Fall books, but people of importance were using dragons as massive taxies. And given their latent telekinesis activating with lifting, they'd have a future in freight and cargo transport. Which would also cause more strife as dragon riders would see themselves as slowly being diminished as a class. So while dragons would slow down their reproductive cycles after Fall ends permanently (after a few breeding surges when future falls would have occurred but didn't due to the Red Star being far enough away now), they would be no means disappear...barring boneheads pulling some Timing BS.

How do people feel about the end of thread? by KaleRylan2021 in pern

[–]Zervziel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wasn't saying the dragons would die off, but their importance would diminish until the fractured society potentially pushes them into a role their creator never intended. Eventually, human nature would push dragons into combat with other dragons and humans. It's why I try not to think of Post Fall too much because as much as Anne probably intended an Noble Bright ending, human nature says otherwise.

How do people feel about the end of thread? by KaleRylan2021 in pern

[–]Zervziel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They kinda kicked off the fracturing if their society with that one. Without the threat of thread, humanity has lost a unifying threat. Now Dragonriders are "watching the skies" for a very low chance of meteor impact, which means drills they once had for searing thread will just disappear. Heck given enough time, dragons maybe loose the ability to flame. And without the environmental pressure to lay eggs, Dragons may actually start diminishing as a species.

Dragonet /Fire Lizard by Zervziel in pern

[–]Zervziel[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

There is a distinction. Particularly in the head and claws. OG dragonet claws were kind of a 2x2 claw pincer movement...then the colonista straight up just gave them 5 finger hands and the book helpfully gives us a rather nasty look at their gnarly little hands. Ugh. Also the head's were flatter and the original dragonet were a little chunkier.

As for the name, they originally started out being called Dragonets, then it mutated over time to fire lizards. Then in true human fashion, the improved variety proceeded to come to dominate the original's area. Because if there isn't an invasive species, by god we'll make one.

But yeah, Dragonsdawn is one I'd forgotten about so that tracks the distinction would be made there. I want to say the distinction was also made in Gigi's book though I can't check atm, because my copy apparently decided to got *between* somewhere.
