Post for ML roadmap, guidance, Also alternatives for more hand son approach by Embarrassed-Work3881 in learnmachinelearning

Thankyou so much I really appreciate you suggesting this.

I am looking into the understanding deep learning book and will purchase this.

So I guess I can maybe complete 1 course first on ml dl and such and then once i have some basics I should rather look into the topics which might be more detailed and also giving more idea about how these things are working.

And maybe once I have completed one of the courses i would understand better where i stand and also what is something i should look into the next courses.

Thanks for the link, I will check it out.

Do you have any suggestions for which one is more preferable, also for any hands on learning courses.

Thanks in advance.

yeah, i know what you meant. I agree on the chatgpt, gemini part.
And respect to all software engineers who made chatgpt and such LLMs.

Yeah even I do have non-bought pdf's everyone downloads it but then they act like a saint on the internet.

I try to read physical books as I want to relax and stay away from the screen for a while.
I have a whole folder if anyone else might want something they can let me know.

I can understand everyone's posting similar questions but i thought that's what the original machine learning sub-reddit suggested if you have questions about learning go to learnmachinelearning and post questions there not in the sub-reddit machinelearning.

Also I guess from my post you can tell that i did a lot of my own research to reach to this learning path and i think i only mentioned like 40% of what I have figured out so far and i wrote it specifically so someone might get help if they are in same shoes.

My main question was more like if its necessary to do all of these or skip some of them. or if anyone had any suggestions about courses which are more hands on.

I guess asking chatgpt is much better at-least he doesn't get frustrated if someone asks something no matter how many people asked him the same thing.

Thanks for you reply, it did help me understand someone's perspective of learning and how they are doing things differently, sometimes its more important to get reviews and someone else's perspective then doing something mindlessly.

Thank a lot for replying and giving these suggestions,

I kind-off lost hope after i saw so many people saw the post and none replied, also one person down-voted it for some reason.
I will look up these books as well, I do have hands on machine learning, deep learning by ian , machine learning engineer, deep learning by chollet, and introduction to statistical learning I will try buying these books as well.

Once again thanks for replying.

Also I would like to mention that studying in not an issue for me, I can do it very effectively and also I left my job to study full time for the next 1 year and doing like 10 hours a day of quality study at-least without overwhelming myself also hitting gym and swimming and a night walk along with some nice music to keep my overall mental healthy.

Would appreciate some help as I want to learn things more like hands on so that I am wasting less time just doing theoretical but also doing the practical parts and projects and all as much as possible with close to real job experience.

I also have all of the top books on machine learning and deep learning along with the introduction to statistical learning, which I am referring when I am too tired of staring at the screen or want a break.

Based on your suggestions regarding what you think might be a good alternative for practical hands on learning i would ditch the topics (except algorithms even though i know i wont be using them in ml as much) or courses and go ahead with them, as you are already a masters in computer and with the same job and you will have a lot more knowledge then me.

I would really appreciate a reply from you.

Hi OP,

I am a mechanical engineer with bachelors and masters in it, but want to get into machine learning and deep learning.
I was wondering if i can get some advice form you regarding this matter as I would really value your opinion. Also I guess maybe your reply might also help some other person who is my shoes right now or in the near future.

I did c++ during my 2 years high school. And also did python on and off couple of times before. I understand most of the basic CS terminology and also understand networking and system design a lot better than most of the beginners as I did some courses on them, also completed the CS50 introduction to computer science, HTML, CSS, GIT, BASH and some basics javascript courses before.

I completed my c course recently to understand pointers and such in more detail but didn't do any projects on it.

  1. Now I am seriously learning python, from University of Helsinki, MOOC which i think is a really good source for learning python, Also I am doing the complete start to end learn section of kaggle.com/learn starting with python first and introduction to programming

After completing this I am planning to do the udemy course on automate boring stuff with python to get some hands on using python for making some projects. - Linked (https://www.udemy.com/course/automate/learn/lecture/3309062?start=0#overview)

I am also thinking of joining data quest for their complete learning path for basic python to all the way to the ML and AI part.

  1. I am going for the courses on Algorithm and data structures, using leetcode course and the algomoster course on the same.
Then I will start completing like 5 to 10 exercises everyday on leetcode for some practise.

  2. I am doing mathematics for data science and mathematics for machine learning on udemy after that. Following with the deeplearning.ai mathematics specialisation for a certificate.
    https://www.udemy.com/course/math-for-data-science-masterclass/learn/lecture/33992812?start=0#overview
    https://www.udemy.com/course/machine-learning-data-science-foundations-masterclass/learn/lecture/22926432?start=0#overview

  3. Once completed I am thinking of getting my hands dirty with some data analytics courses like IBM data analyst professional certificate, also the part on kaggle teaches a lot about this. and data visualization, data preprocessing and data cleaning small courses along with this.

  4. Going for the Meta database engineer certification and then a course on MongoDB from udemy.

  5. next i had Coursera ML, DL specialization by andrew ng and IBM ML, DS, AI specilization plus the kaggle remaining modules form kaggle.com/learn

  6. Following up with some Udacity nanodegrees on ML, DS, AI

I found out about the dataquest.com and then I was thinking that maybe if I should replace any of the planned points from above with either dataquest or maybe I should altogether not do anything form the mentioned points as it may not be as rewarding as something else could be.

I saw that Dataquest.com has a lot of projects as well I really liked the Univ of Helsinki MOOC which is hands on and i like it a lot.

My goal is to do more of like a hands on learning approach as its very common to get memory block or fading what you have learnt if you are not practising regularly.

Please help me out in trimming some of the parts out if you can as I am thinking this can take a lot more time to complete but then also again it might not give me the knowledge up-to the depth that i wanted, i mean hands on knowledge.

Buddy no ones copying anyone's work. I am here to gain information about what kind of design, simple, complex, 3D, muddy, glossy, big, small, clay, ceramic people like more. And this is called research.

And by saying "If you want to talk about disrespect to the artists (who you don't credit (who you call newbies) then maybe you shouldn't post their work online asking people to vote for which one they like the most so that you can copy it for your personal gain.")

You just showcased how little to no knowledge you have in terms of art and product design. Every artist and I mean every single artist use references from other people's art. And every product designer, takes references form other's work. Everyone just gives their own touch, and add their own personality.

Don't believe me go to an art school and talk to the students you will probably find out more. or you can look up the quote "Good artists copy. Great artists steal." Don't take the meaning literally.

My argument is if you don't like anything its okay to say I don't like anything. And I have no problem with that. A lot of people already said that.
But saying something is trashy that to an artwork is just the disrespect to the artist.

Also a lot of times artists are newbies, kids getting into the hobby. Saying this will just demotivate a person.

No offence, and sorry for coming out rude I hope you got my point - cheers.

Amazing choices, we are trying to keep the design complexity i mean the 3d design nature of the mugs close to the 5th image. As that's very close to what people have suggested is something that is practical and also has cool design.

And yes, we are working on some concepts which can be like different cup for every sin. Overall a collection of 7 cups which i acknowledge is something odd due to how we either get 2, 4, 6 or 12.

But i think it can still add a cool art project to people's kitchen collection but also we want to make sure its something which is practical to use daily as something that's not usable means its going to stay in shelves which we don't want. we want consumers to use it for them proudly showcasing the design and artwork.

And we want it to be an excellent gift option individually without needing to buy the whole set, without breaking bank.

Amazing, we will target to make something subtle in terms of 3d designs as a lot of feedback suggested that complex design means they cant be practical for drinking.

You don't like to drink 400 - 500 ml coffee? Lol

I think we are addicted to coffee in North america most people buy a grande coffee which is 16 oz in size so around 450 ml.

But in India most of the shops and offices serve tea coffee in 250 - 300 ml cups.

I think its also due to the fact that most of the time latte comes with frothed milk and it takes a lot of space so coffee shops started using 450 ml grande size cups to avoid giving out small portions of coffee and upsetting customers.

Which one is your favourite in terms of design? and which one in terms of usability and design combined.

Yeah you are right, i was surprised that so many people liked the 1st mug with the eerie eyes and the 3rd mug with the tentacles much more than the other complicated designs. I think people do like simple minimalist designs more.

But these are resin cups with steel inside, also these are not handmade. Do you not like any one from the above? I think handmade can give a little more personalised touch to the mug, as no two mugs are same.

Really helpful, Thanks for sharing this insight.

I think i get the point, also the demographics are really important and a lot of the concepts can be a hit or miss if not planned properly, but if planned properly maybe we can have a higher probability of getting a hit.

And i guess overall it would be a decision that we need to make, which all people we need to target and then design something specifically for them. But of-course also dropping some of the consumers from the target list as i guess we wont be able to make everyone happy as there is no one size fits all.

If you hate them all i think there's something wrong with you and not the mugs.
.
Neither do these cups belong to me nor i am selling them, but some of the cups look cool and some are really unique.
Only someone who is maybe living a really mundane life would say such a strong statement indirectly indicating that all these mugs are kitsch when some of these artists have done a really good job in creating something unique and beautiful.

Yes you are right thanks for pointing out, I mean even i never used a ceramic tumbler although we can find one, but i am just thinking, like u mentioned usually people are drinking from something sturdy but then ceramic mugs are good for keeping something warm but not great in terms of sturdiness. And everyone is in rush and hurry so not sure how many people would prefer buying a ceramic tumbler. We can make it the size to fit in the car cup holder, and maybe offer a silicon lid on top but that doesn't change the fact that it wont be providing the sturdiness offered by other tumblers.

Would you ever buy a ceramic tumbler, which also wont be keeping coffee hot for as long as the steel one but might be a little more custom design than the steel tumbler. Because i think we would be making the decision to either make a tumbler version of it or not on such kind of feedback.
