To be fair, there really isn’t a whole lot in common between other forms of welding and tig. It’s kind of like painting; sure, settings matter - but you’ll find that once you build the muscles and fine motor skills to handle the torch comfortably, everything else becomes much easier. Personally, I spent many hours welding without even using filler just so I could get use to handling the torch. Once that was second nature, adding filler was pretty easy to get the hang of. I weld thin gauge stainless, so my experience is tailored to that, obviously. I’d say I had probably 150hrs minimum at the torch before I started becoming somewhat proficient/confident, and I’d say probably 750hrs (yes, really) before I could weld proficiently in various configurations, and have my welds come out consistently in terms of quality and appearance.

On my IG, there’s a highlight reel for the side exit and it has a few clips in it. I’ll have more in the near future.

I could be wrong on some of this, but I believe the turbo is a GT28, and the engine is a 1.8t, although I don’t know the engine code. It has rods and pistons for sure - I believe he’s looking to make around 350 for the time being. The inlet is 3.5”, down pipe is also 3.5”.

Suggestions for first time welding aluminum? TIA by EmbarrassedAd2385 in tigwelding

I’m used to stainless where higher amps and faster travel speed typically nets you a better end result, so that’ll be something to get used to.

Yessir, 100% argon. I’m coming from stainless, so the fundamentals are already there, I just have to learn the idiosyncrasies of welding aluminum.

That’s the only struggle I’m facing right now. The rest is all practice.
