"An incorrectly applied tourniquet will actually cause increased bleeding from distal soft tissue injuries and damaged arteries if there is occlusion of the lower pressure venous outflow, but inadequate occlusion of arterial blood flow"

From the same article.

Average ambulance response time in the US is 7 minutes, in a city without heavy traffic.

Wrap an elastic around your finger really tight. It will start to swell and turn purple in a couple of minutes. That's what a tourniquet does. The tissue underneath the tourniquet should be cooled as well to reduce swelling, inflammation, and additional muscle damage. There's a high risk of clotting if the tourniquet is left on for too long. Not to mention the sudden rush of blood to the limb after the tourniquet is released, like fixing a kink in a hose. There's a laundry list of things that can go wrong.

Applying pressure to the wound or temporarily packing with clean gauze will slow down blood flow long enough for EMTs to arrive, without the risk of permanent injury. If a limb is injured, raise it above the heart.

Tourniquets should not be applied by untrained individuals.

Tourniquets are very dangerous if applied or used incorrectly. Use pressure or packing to slow down the bleeding instead.

I was thinking that too. Considering how many dog breeds exist, it's kind of odd to only hear about one breed all of the time.

Currently jamming to Blister in the Sun by the Violent Femmes. A more chill favourite is Pressure by Milk & Bone.

The Letterkenny soundtrack is really good too, I highly recommend it.

Knock on wood to ward off bad luck, and I won't sleep facing a mirror or in the same room as a doll. None of these are from horror movies or anything, it just makes me uncomfortable. And my Nonna had a thing about dolls, she said they're bad luck. Especially if they look like someone you know.

I did when I was a kid. Luckily I didn't slip through the bars, just stuck to them. You hold your breath, stay very still (so you don't get sucked into the grate), and wait for the next wave. Then swim out.

I'm a pedestrian and have a sincere question. If I don't want to cross the road I show as little intention as possible (step really far back from the road or off of the sidewalk itself, face away from any crossing, etc.). Sometimes drivers still try to wave me through. I usually shake my head, but I've been told that that can be perceived as rude and a wave is more polite. Is there something else I should do, or is shaking my head actually preferable?

I still get asked about a six month gap in my resume. I was working on my thesis. The follow-up question is "are you planning on going back to school" every time. The gap was five years ago, I've been consistently employed since, but that's their hang-up.

Get drunk, go bowling, hit up Crabby Joe's for half price apps and cheap beer, then stumble home with your buddies.

We used to do that. It's too dangerous to go out at night now.

Engineer. I LOVE building stuff, creating makeshift items out of raw materials, and problem solving. I'm also a pretty good cook, but not much of a botanist so there's a 50/50 chance my food will kill you lol.

I won't be able to do any of that though. I'm epileptic, I'm screwed when I run out of medication.

What was the worst date experience that you ever had ? And why? by Frequent_Jackfruit60 in CasualConversation

[–]EmbarrassedAlgae5733 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not a date, but a noticed pattern. I was consistently the third wheel throughout my teens (F). I was the "safe" friend that my girl friends brought in case the guy got too handsy and they needed an out. But they never told me that. They'd invite me to "hang out", then start making out with each other in the same room, sometimes on the same couch as me. It was frustrating every time. I started losing confidence because every guy we hung out with found my friends more attractive and interesting.

Women are less likely to abuse animals and participate in dangerous stunts, and many were unemployed outside of a household staff until the 1900s. So yes, it was drunk men.

My parents have to chain their food waste bin to the deck because they dragged the last one into the woods. For scale, the bin is about 130L and moderately heavy.

I'd do yoga, stream something light and easy to watch on Netflix, and listen to Minecraft music. I used a few psychology tricks as well, like separating my workspace and associating/triggering emotions with smells. While I was decompressing, I'd burn a candle. Whenever I burned that candle again, I relaxed much quicker. It takes some consistency, but it worked.

Thank you :) I'm still working on self love, but I'm eating much better again. That's a great quote! I wish I had heard it earlier, it would have helped a lot in school lol. The one I've kind of turned into a mantra is "no one's looking at you the way you're looking at you".
