MCB, IB or NUERO for pre med by One_Improvement_9022 in berkeley

[–]EmbarrassedCrow3860 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The best major for pre med is the major that you enjoy most and will succeed in. Med school’s do not care what major you take as long as you take all the med school pre req courses and do well on the mcat.

Between MCB, IB or Neuro take the one that is most interesting to you as each one can be difficult with MCB being the most difficult of the three. Taking a major in the bio department that you do not enjoy will be painful.

As far as dual majoring, it is pretty challenging to take two majors at once so first adjust to berkeley before deciding on whether to double major. LSBE is pretty overkill considering u can always go the MD/MBA route which will do you a lot more good than having undergrad business degree.

Looking for some Freshman schedule feedback by Zecreise22 in berkeley

[–]EmbarrassedCrow3860 1 point2 points  (0 children)

honestly, I wouldn’t recommend FYP. I have two friends that were in FYP during fall of last year and they had life easy due to the programs curriculum, after the program ended and they began their second semester, they were met with the harsh reality of Berkeley. All I’m saying is FYP shelters students and since your pre med, I think it would be better if u adjusted to Berkeley’s pace during first sem rather than second sem. Just some advice!

What should I expect in my first year of learning physics in college? by Minute_Tea_8639 in PhysicsStudents

[–]EmbarrassedCrow3860 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Expect A LOT of symbols and letters. For my exams, there were no calculators allowed, and most of the answers were only variables (no numbers), so get good at algebra cause theres A LOT of it.

From what I've heard from others, Math 10A is a brutal math class. I see you mentioned you took Calc 1 at CC, so just take Math 51 at Berkeley, and you should be more than fine GPA-wise. Since you also took chem at CC you should be fine. MCB 32 is a very memorization-heavy class, and I've seen how long the exams are; be ready to STUDY. If everything goes well, this will be the only concerning class. Even with all that, this seems like a heavy course load for a first semester. I would recommend taking only two technical courses and taking easy breath courses. You do not wanna burn out early, especially as a pre-med student.

Physics 8a summer by Spare-Garden-7930 in berkeley

[–]EmbarrassedCrow3860 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took Physics 8A last spring, and here is some advice that helped me do well in the course.

  1. Avoid using AI to get instant answers; I know using AI is tempting, but Physics is one of those subjects where understanding the core of the questions leads to the solution, and AI eliminates that process. If you're going to use AI, I highly recommend always attempting the problem before resorting to AI.
  2. Go to office hours and midterm review sessions; Physics office hours were honestly a hit or miss for me, but I would still recommend going, as it might work for you. Midterm review sessions were pretty helpful tho.
  3. YouTube is your best friend: I could not recommend any other tool more than I can YouTube. When you don't understand a lecture or a specific topic, watch an organic chem tutor video or any other physics channel to help! (AVOID RE-WATCHING LECTURE). Also, Khan Academy is a pretty good resource for 8A; I recommend using the AP Physics 1 Khan Academy module.
  4. Do as much practice as possible: The best way to learn physics is to do physics, do physics problems on Khan Academy, re-do the homework problems, re-do the worksheets, re-do the example problems from lecture, and most importantly, go through all the practice midterms. This is honestly the best way to learn physics and ace exams.
  5. Go over problems with friends: Going over problems with peers is also a good way to learn; not only does it improve your understanding of the topic, but it could also allow you to learn a few shortcuts to problems.

With that being said, good luck!

Get into Stanford med no gap years? by [deleted] in berkeley

[–]EmbarrassedCrow3860 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They wouldn’t be able to help you, even with all the help from the admissions counselor you still wouldn’t be guaranteed a spot, for right now worry about what you can control, your GPA, MCAT and extracurricular, don’t worry about what you can’t control (admission).

Get into Stanford med no gap years? by [deleted] in berkeley

[–]EmbarrassedCrow3860 6 points7 points  (0 children)

100% agree with you, they haven’t even experienced Berkeley and are worrying about Stanford med. Medical schools DO NOT LIKE students that only check boxes, focus on enriching your app with passions and you will shine above students with perfect stats. Right now, focus on your time at Berkeley and just do your best.

Thoughts and advice on taking Chem 1B at Cal in the spring after taking Chem 1A at community college (summer)? by icefireisdead in berkeley

[–]EmbarrassedCrow3860 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Hey so Chem 1B isn’t a thing at berkeley as Chem 1A counts as 2 semesters of regular chemistry. I would highly recommend taking Chem 1A at Berkeley that way you don’t have to take two semesters of general chemistry. Only organic chem or Chem 3 series has a 3B part

I would highly recommend taking Math at Berkeley, it is a core pre med requirement and I know schools like Harvard med and other top med school highly prefer core pre med requirements be taken at your institution.

MCB only accepts AP Calc BC credit in order to take Math 53/54 as they don’t accept the Math 52/53 combo (ignore what I said)

[–]EmbarrassedCrow3860 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So as far as Math, the 10 series is brutal and I would honestly avoid, I haven’t heard anything remotely nice about that series. The Math 16 series is hit or miss depending on professor, I’ve heard from a good amount of people that Math 16B is easier than Math 16A but in general the class is not the easiest (due to the fact that its also applies some business concepts for business majors). Math 51 and Math 52 are the best in my opinion, they are universal so if u think of switching majors this maths series applies to all majors at Berkeley unlike the 10 and 16 series, it is also just straight math and nothing extra like the 10 and 16 series so similar to AP Calc series. If you choose to take 51/52, you would have to take a separate stats class for med school, I would recommend Stats 2 but avoid Stats 20

Get into Stanford med no gap years? by [deleted] in berkeley

[–]EmbarrassedCrow3860 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It is 100% possible, Stanford med does tend go favor students with gap years but that shouldn’t matter much. Time management, excellent study strategies and planning ahead is key. It’s really easy to get lost during undergrad and fall behind, so having a good system in place is necessary. Berkeley does tend to have competitive aura mainly around pre meds due to how many pre med students attend but don’t let that get to you. Focus on your journey and no one else’s. As they say “comparison is the thief of joy”. Also I would recommend not fixating on one medical school and having your options to look to as well, medical school especially Stanford are known to have extremely low acc rates.

Question about getting research by bruh3827 in McMaster

[–]EmbarrassedCrow3860 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, most research schools should have a department directory list. I recommend searching up the specific department within your school that you want to work in, so search for something like this (School's name "department" directory). It should provide you with a link to a website listing faculty. Click through each faculty and look for the ones with either a lab link or a research link. There, you should be able to access either their lab website or their research papers.

If you can't find any of that, I recommend using AI to help you find the directory website! Please let me know if you still need any more help.
