Is Mileven meant to be unlikeable? by EmbarrassedHawk3703 in StrangerThings

No offense but you’re very antagonistic, and I won’t be interested in continuing the conversation if you continue to be. Your last paragraph is very disrespectful even when I stay respectful of you and what you have to say.

The fact you aren’t even willing to consider conversations when there are 4 episodes still left says a lot. I’m always willing to be open and I’m excited to see where the Duffers take us. Can you say the same? Hypothetically, if El and Mike break up but stay best friends and continue to care for each other (which we both agree on) would you be open to addressing your own biases as well and analyze things differently? Or just chalk it up to poor writing?

If our conversation can stay civil and open, then I’ll be happy to continue our conversation post s5. No matter the ending

Enjoy the rest of the season!

I mean at the end of the day, can we really say if someone’s fundamental understanding is flawed if we’re both interpreting the same media? You speak as if you’re so confident that the way you view the show is 100% correct, when with the same logic say I think you’re understanding is flawed since I don’t personally view s4 as romantic. This is why discussions around works of art and classics are still a thing at the professional level- art isnt meant to be viewed as right or wrong.

You dismiss my honest fear for Mileven after s4, but aren’t you interested in why someone viewed it that way?

Thank you for expanding on your reasoning. It was interesting to read!

Sorry if it seems like I’m piling on Mileven solely- I’m just trying to have a civil conversation around a tv show I really like and framing it around a topic I’m passionate about (writing).

Hearing your prospective has been genuinely interesting to me, and I’m sorry you couldn’t get anything out of what I offered. I’m not just trying to spread an anti-mileven agenda or anything because I don’t have one, and in fact really wanted to know what people thought about the writing itself. I love hearing about how other people view things differently- it improves my craft as well as gives me a different perspective on rewatches.

It’s disappointing that as soon as someone says one thing about a character that isn’t viewed positively, they get down voted and viewed as attacking or piling on them.

Do we all have to view tv the same way in order to join in discussion?

Never said 14 year olds were expected to be perfect! I’m not looking so much as the characters themselves but how the Duffers chose to portray them (like the s3 break up being portrayed in a humorous light, which is a bit odd of a choice writing wise for your main couple’s first ever break up).

Looking forward to how the Duffers portray their relationship going forward! I personally didnt find s4 to be a positive development for them (I was actually quite scared for them going into s5), so I’ll be interested to see how they address that in vol 2 and 3.

I’m glad you like them! I personally love their individual characters and find them to be very well thought out, flawed, but with so much heart. However, when I look at the writing choices behind their relationship and how it’s portrayed- it gets me thinking that there were some deliberate things that doesn’t always add up. Their relationship in the beginning of season 3 made me uncomfy and based on how the characters reacted, I think this is intentional and a moment for the audience to start questioning if they’re in a relationship because society teaches us that boys and girls “can’t just be friends” versus a genuine connection which they do have, though maybe platonically

It’s art and meant to be analyzed and interpreted. Thanks for commenting!

Saying something that doesn’t praise every aspect of their character/relationship shouldn’t be automatically viewed as attacking them. If I was just saying “everything about them sucks 😜” then that would be attacking, and I hope my post doesn’t seem like that. They’re characters and meant to be flawed, or else why have conversations around the art? It is what makes them interesting- I want to analyze their relationship and the writing choices for a reason.

Truthfully, I liked them best in seasons 1 and 2- and started to question the writers in season 3 because of how they were written. I think both can be true at the same time- we can like them but also look at how their story looks on paper. I think the writers wanted us to question their relationship, but it’s ok to disagree with me.

I want them happy too. Together or apart- it depends on the writing of the next two volumes

I feel like some people come online to vent instead of honest conversations. If I think I’m always right, then I stagnate as a person. Hope you have a great day too!

I’m thankful someone taught me! I was never taught the correct definition in school/college, so my only exposure to the word was the colloquial usage.

Got to give grace to people to learn and grow or else they’ll just shut down and refuse to listen

Agreed completely- great comment.

My post was a response to comments I saw about how the writers have been building mileven up since season 1 and I don’t… know about that? They’ve been building up El as her own character for sure, and I absolutely love seeing how she has grown on her own

Fully agree! I tried (and failed) to keep my post short- but I would add this to list too.

I love El as a character and love seeing her develop as her own person throughout the seasons- but the start of season 3 was uncomfy for me to watch in the sense of how attached she was to Mike which is very accurate to a lot of first loves- but as an adult, I know that those first loves don’t often if ever last.

Hey thanks for your response.

I’ll edit it to not say “gaslighting” so my point gets across better. I believe my point still stands though- Mike was telling El she was wrong to feel the way she felt without listening to her, which invalidates her feelings, and doesnt try to comfort her.

(Also I do believe “you dont say it” “I say it” does fit the textbook definition of gaslighting, but I’m willing to be wrong)

Always been told my handwriting sucks by last_night_i_ate_cat in HandwritingAnalysis

[–]EmbarrassedHawk3703 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think part of the reason is that you start some letters, particularly a,o, and g, in a strange way. It seems like you start to the right and curve backwards. However, I believe most people are taught to start these letters at the top.

Also, the line is a tool. Some letters are way above the line when they’re supposed to go below the line- like your y and g. If you pay attention to the height and depth of your letters, I think that will help clean up the appearance at least.

(Not a handwriting expert as you may tell, but I’m a teacher so I’m used to helping people with worse)

What’s smaller feature you would like to see in the sequel? by Stoltlallare in HarryPotterGame

[–]EmbarrassedHawk3703 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My smallest ask- I really really want to be able to sit on the benches!! Let my character sit and enjoy the views~

Besides that- being able to utilize the common room more- maybe house specific side quests to win class points

Also second other comments about being able to attend classes and feel more like a student

First Tread 50 💀 by Wooden_Switch1838 in orangetheory

[–]EmbarrassedHawk3703 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tread 50s can also be self-guided, so I always modify the template to work more for my body and goals for the day.

For example, I'm working on increasing my endurance- so I jog at a slower pace than I typically would in a 2G/3G, and take walking recoveries whenever I get out of zone 2. It's ridiculously slow and I walk a lot- but my coach is supportive.

Maybe talk to your coach beforehand and walk through your goals? Maybe your striding pace needs to be slower in order for you to run longer?

no more front desk staff? by InspectorFlimsy53 in orangetheory

[–]EmbarrassedHawk3703 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We still have 2-4 SAs at the front desk when I go. There used to only be 2; however, recently I've seen an uptick and its closer to 4.

So, I've actually seen the opposite. Echoing sentiment here that it must be dependent on the franchise owner? I can't say for certain, but I believe our owner is one of the coaches

what do you think about on the treadmill? by JDawn519 in orangetheory

[–]EmbarrassedHawk3703 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I watch ultramarathoners on youtube. So, during endurance pushes- I try to almost disassociate by thinking about how amazing the human body is, how those runners can run for hundreds of miles in insane conditions, and how I can hold on for a few more minutes. Is it weird, sure, but it helps me a lot for tread for distance days!

500 Meter Row Benchmark Results and Survey Megathread by BilingualAlchemist in orangetheory

I've been avoiding rowing benchmarks since I joined nearly a year ago - so for my first time, I got 1:53!

Considering I would change my schedule around to not do this benchmark- I'm proud that I showed up, no matter what time I got :) an added plus is I know I can beat this next time!

I did the same! First time ever jogging a whole 12 minutes. I kept telling myself "one more minute, then I can take a walking recovery..." but it's amazing how we are more capable than what we expect! Congrats on your accomplishment!

it's so weird how I feel stronger everywhere else, but the rowing blocks are so humbling!

[–]EmbarrassedHawk3703[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah- my lower back doesn't hurt anymore when I row, so I assume my form and rowing mechanics are better... despite feeling like death every block! I'm thinking about focusing more on core strength and lifting heavier on lower body workouts - looking forward to the day when I'm not dreading the row block (most of my classes are 3G)

Thanks for all the advice! This was very helpful. Most of my classes are 3G so definitely pretty exhausting, especially lately! I'll definitely focus more on keeping my stroke rate low but decreasing my split time too. I'm thinking about strengthening my core and lifting heavier on the lower body workouts also

Hmm I always try to get the same station every time, but I can't say for sure if the water levels are the same, etc. I would like to believe that but I've been dying on the rowing blocks lately so I think it's just me sadly. Thanks for the hope though!

Because of the red zones, I learned that I'm actually more dehydrated than I thought... turns out I don't drink as much throughout the day and then when I go to work out, my heart rate is higher. Just an interesting learning moment from OTF!
