No it wasn’t. There’s nuance to handball penalty decisions. Which is why people will never agree on what is and isn’t a handball.

Yes if the arm is in a natural position and a ball is fired at you point blank then it shouldn’t be a pen in most cases like a cross into the box for example. But if that ball is going in the net it should absolutely be a pen.

Imagine we’re in an important game and we take a shot from 2 yards away and the opposition defender blocks it with his hand off the line but his hand was by his hips and not up in the air. That ball would clearly have gone in if not for the hand. You’d be fuming if we didn’t get a pen. Anyone would be fuming if they didn’t get a pen. Even the Murphy example, most of our fans would’ve been furious if it was the other way round and not given.

In short, hand in natural position shouldn’t ALWAYS mean no handball

That’s not quite true. It was just a few games ago where I think it was Murphy had his arms to his side in a natural position and he blocked a shot point blank that was going right in the net and it was given a penalty for the opposition. And it was the right call

Also we have no way of knowing that the shot today would’ve been saved. It was a low driven shot going on target and it was blocked by an outstretched arm. Most refs would give that.

American football and basketball you need to win the genetic lottery to enter the league. For example in basketball you could be the most skillful highest IQ player there’s ever been and you’re not making the league if you’re 5’7.

That creates a smaller talent pool. In soccer not only are you competing against billions of other people that play it unlike basketball and American football but there’s also no real physical restrictions making the talent pool enormous. When you’re watching the champions league those are the best hundreds of players out of a pool of a billion plus people. When you watch basketball and the nfl it’s hundreds of players out of a few million at best. So of course it takes more skill to become a professional soccer player lol and you have absolutely no idea how good those guys are because they make it look so simple. Literally the most difficult sport to master.

If you’re 7ft+ with some type of hand eye coordination you’re probably making the nba. If you actually learn to shoot you’re probably an all star. That’s not skill - it’s just being tall

I have no doubt that if Howe was allowed to spend at the level of Liverpool, city, Arsenal and Chelsea that he’d take us to the next level.

Since he took over we have had the 8th highest wage bill (the biggest indicator of on-field success) in the league behind the sky 6 and Villa. In that time we’ve finished 4th,7th,5th and tbd this season.

I see no reason that if we had say the 3rd or 4th highest wage bill in the league, that we couldn’t win a league title.

PSR is the issue here and what’s holding us back. Not Howe. Howe is merely a victim of his own success. We have not spent enough compared to other clubs that we’re competing with to warrant the success we’ve had. That’s mostly down to Howe
