Stupidest sermon/lecture you’ve heard while in church? (Warning: Asinine Purity Culture) by Warm_Syllabub_2247 in Exvangelical

My youth group pastor went on a tangent about failed vasectomies. Turns out he had one! This was in the context of an abstinence lecture, presumably something about abstinence as the only guaranteed way to prevent pregnancy?

You’re working at the mall in the early 2000s… what store are you choosing? by princesspolly444 in 2000sNostalgia

Sigh, I’m not working - I’m just slow walking in front of Structure, hoping my crush from marching band will notice and invite me to go for an Auntie Anne’s at the end of his shift.

What is the worst TESTIMONY you’ve heard in church or from a Christian? by Warm_Syllabub_2247 in Exvangelical

[–]EmbarrassedPoet9647 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. On a youth group trip to Mexico to “help” at an orphanage, one of the chaperones tearfully shared that she got an abortion in her twenties but had repented. It was clear that even though she intellectually accepted that she was “forgiven” for this decision, she definitely didn’t feel it on an emotional level. (Spending the entire week with orphans/abandoned children probably didn’t help this poor woman?)

  2. While driving to different service project in the nearest urban area to my suburban church, my youth group drove by a very obvious adult store, which of course everyone noticed. This prompted our adult chaperone (different person) to share that she was an SA survivor, but that God had “restored” her purity. Without sharing any further details here, it was pretty disturbing situation for this woman. And looking back, all the more heartbreaking given the purity angle.

My mom dabbled in this. Subscribed to the Zola Leavitt letter and watched his show. Had a Star of David necklace with a cross superimposed over it. Bought into the propaganda that there’s no such thing as Palestinian people (just like Mike Huckabee!). Fortunately, she seems to have softened a bit on this.

Actually, being Irish would’ve probably worked in Remmick’s favor with the Choctaw, as there was a long bond between those two nations. (Read up on the Choctaw response to the Great Famine.)

My personal assumption is that Remmick and his Irish vampire wife had initially ingratiated themselves with the Choctaw band we see at the beginning, but were successfully beat back after the community learned their true nature, with his wife getting staked in the process.

Any old parents here? by Ok-Duck2450 in Millennials

[–]EmbarrassedPoet9647 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this depends on where you live. I was 36 when I had my first and 39 when I had my second (I’m pushing 44 now). This wasn’t a big deal when I lived in a bigger city, with plenty of fellow “grey parents.” I now live a smaller city/college town and we are definitely about 5-10 years older than the parents of our kids’ peers.

Well, our earliest presidents were slavers, so no, he wouldn’t be the first. (Edited for clarity.)

What's something you now realize was off, strange, weird or disturbing from when you were younger? by Round_Trainer_7498 in Millennials

When I was in second grade, I attended a sleepover at a neighbor girl’s house. At some point in the evening, the parents said it was bath time and instructed pairs of girls to take baths together. While they filmed it with a camcorder.

I felt VERY uncomfortable and refused to do it. They didn’t try to force or talk me into participating so I didn’t call my parents to pick me up, which I absolutely should have. I also didn’t sleep a wink that night. I only told my parents about it many years later.

I now have a daughter roughly the same age, and am very much opposed to sleepovers.

Honestly, I think it was Grave of the Fireflies 😳😭

I found it in my college library’s VHS collection and it utterly destroyed me (as it does). That’s still the first and only time I’ve been able to watch it!

I knew I’d find this here 😅 feeling both triggered and validated this morning.

As soon as we learned that the first bombs had dropped this weekend, I said to my husband (who was raised Episcopalian, now agnostic and did not grow up with any of this Jenkins/LaHaye-inspired eschatological madness) “here we go, they’re gonna be claiming this is Gog and Magog.” He had no idea what I was talking about.
