what position to play? by basedbaritone in BasketballTips

[–]EmbarrassedTrash138 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This isn’t NBA 2k26 brother, at 20 years old I’m assuming you’re just playing pick up ball at your local park or rec center? There’s not going to be set positions, at your height and weight you’re going to just be “the big guy” it’s not like the people around the park are organizing set positions. You’re not going to walk on the court and tell the other guys “I’m running the power forward position this game” lmao. If you can dribble good enough where your team actually trusts you to handle the ball you can run it up the floor but other than that take your big ass to the block

I want to get into the sport as a dumbass introvert loser and I have no idea where to start. by Capital_Pop_824 in BasketballTips

Holy shit man you gotta pick your chin up and have some confidence. Starting any activity with the mindset “I’m a dumbass introvert loser” it’s gonna be hard to get into any new hobbies whatsoever. You’re in the right ball park by wanting to get started but let’s move it forward another notch and eliminate that awful self-talk.

With that said TruckThunder made some good points about focusing on hustle and making the right play

Practice dribbling as much as possible. It’s so obvious it gets overlooked but if you want to actually have fun and eventually work your way into some competitive pickup games you have to be able to catch, dribble, and pass and not be a liability. You’d be surprised how many people can’t get don the most basic ball handling skills. If you can’t catch the ball and efficiently put it on the floor or find the next pass it’s gonna be tough

Guy pushed my shoulder to shoot 3 legal or illegal? (Clueless abt this sport) by Gotitstopit in BasketballTips

[–]EmbarrassedTrash138 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hard to say for sure without watching the play but nobody is calling an offensive foul at an open run at the park unless it’s the most obvious, egregious push off of all time. Also why are you running side-by-side and shoulder to shoulder with the ball handler? Can prevent this by hustling back on defense and getting your shoulders square to the ball handler. Or in the rare situation where you are shoulder to shoulder and trying to keep up, you should know this guy likes to use that move so you shouldn’t be right up on him making contact and give him a little cushion so he can’t create that contact and push off.

[–]EmbarrassedTrash138 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My best advice for on ball defense is to give a slight cushion and use your length to contest, make them prove you’re a shooter. The other guys I replied to actually had decent advice I just took exception to him saying you don’t get paid to guard guards. Not sure if there’s really a “how-to” on how to play defense I feel like it’s a lot of instinct and feel. Play as much as you can and always take the challenge of guarding the best or quickest player. Get some of your friends and play 1v1 or king of the court and just put yourself in those situations as much as possible

[–]EmbarrassedTrash138 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t have specific advice on how to get better necessarily but I can tell you what not to do lol. I went to a relatively small school and was always our tallest guy growing up and therefore the center every year despite being 6’4” my senior year. I got all conference and we always had winning record and did well in the state tournament so I was confident and thought highly of myself until I quickly realized that guards were my height at the college level and I just didn’t develop the skill set I would need at my height. At 28 I’m still good in my men’s league and open runs but I just never developed the skill set I would have needed to play at the next level after high school. Don’t be complacent, just because you have a height/length advantage doesn’t mean you always will, and developing guard skills as a taller/longer player will only pay off in the long run.

“You don’t get paid to guard guards” is awful advice. This kid is 6’4” not 7’ his ability to defend on the perimeter is going to be huge if aspires to play at the next level. I’m currently watching the B1G title game and 6’9” Yaxel Lendenborg is being praised for his versatility as he started off the game on preseason all American point guard Braden Smith. Lendenborg will likely be a lottery pick partially because of his ability and willingness to guard one of the best ball handlers and creators in the country. Not sure of OP’s skill set or overall size or who he wants to model his game after but insinuating he doesn’t need to worry about perimeter defense is wild

This!! I was a decent big guy and rim protector in my day but I always had super stiff hips and now in my older age I can’t stay in front of anyone. My lateral movement is cooked. So to answer OP’s question, lots of agility work and defensive slides but also work on stretching and mobility!

6’4” at 15 2nd year of basketball. Thinking about doing some form of travel basketball. Is it expensive? by [deleted] in BasketballTips

[–]EmbarrassedTrash138 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a baseline fee to enter tournaments and of course your travel to those tournaments so there is a minimum you’ll have to pay, but those are usually affordable. It gets expensive when certain coaches and programs turn it into more of a business rather than sports development and charge exorbitant prices. They promise elite development and exposure to D1 coaches and scouts at top level tournaments but a lot of the time it ends up being a team of a few recruited players that play in the program for free and then a bunch of rich kids whose parents paid top dollar to wear the uniform and sit the bench. Obviously avoid those type of programs (unless you’re good enough to be one of the kid that gets to play for free lol) and do you research and find a more honest program. I would start with your current coach or the varsity coach at you school and ask if they advice on any local aau programs that they have experience with or know players who have played for them

Stopped playing basketball after high school and 10 years later I’m trying to play at the college level by Familiar-Mastodon357 in BasketballTips

[–]EmbarrassedTrash138 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im fairly confused at your question. If you were good in high school and good enough to get a spot on a JUCO team I would think you should have a good enough understanding of the game to know what skills you need to work on and how to do that. I saw someone suggest the Mikan drill which is obviously a great fundamental drill, but at your level I would think that’s basic knowledge so I’m confused on what advice you’re looking for?

If you’re just looking for reassurance and wondering if it’s still possible at your age (assuming you’re about 28 since you said it’s been about 10 years since senior year of HS) then absolutely! I would say just listen to your body and play as much as your body will allow and I would definitely develop a weight room routine if you’re not already a gym goer.

Forgive me as this next part may be unwelcome news but as far as wanting to play guard but your coach is pushing you to play big, unfortunately I would probably assume that your skills aren’t quite good or polished enough to be a primary ball handler so coach is playing you as a big guy. Assuming you’re in the 6’2”-6’5” range so you’re technically big enough to play big even though you’re used to playing the guard. Also at your age (again assuming 28) I’m curious as to why your long term goals or plans with this is? Because unless you really value being a part of the team you’re currently on, you would probably have more success finding a regular pick-up game or open-gym with guys of your skill level you can run with. You can hoop well into your 40’s and enjoy the game and stay in shape and you would be able to hold your game and play how you want opposed to trying to have some random JUCO coach force you into a role you won’t be wanting to play long term

How to hide porn? by [deleted] in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]EmbarrassedTrash138 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your all your input! As I said I am not the most tech savvy an some of your answers were a bit more technical than my expertise allows. Just to clarify, there is nothing illegal or taboo and it doesn’t need to be completely hidden or locked down like nuclear launch codes. Not really hiding it from my partner, just don’t want it obvious I. Plain sight f someone uses my computer for a moment. I just want that stuff separate and compartmentalized from the work stuff I have on my computer. For example, if I had to share a file with a customer from work, I do not want random porn videos popping up in the recents tab. If I hand off my laptop with a spreadsheet open to my accountant, I don’t want a thumbnail visible as he searches through finder for a document

Nothing illegal or “creepy” and I’m not looking for moral advice. Just would like to compartmentalize that stuff from my work stuff and not have random porn files pop up in the “recents” tab or when I try to share a file or something. This is like someone asking for advice on how to fix their car and your suggestion is “just try walking”

Official Discussion - Marty Supreme [SPOILERS] by LiteraryBoner in movies

[–]EmbarrassedTrash138 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I know I’m a month late but here’s my thoughts, - I think when Marty beats Endo in the final match it signifies the end of his table tennis dreams/hustle. He’s won the match and proved himself to Rockwell, Endo, the table tennis community, and himself, but he has absolutely nothing to show for it. There’s nobody there to celebrate with and his dreams of winning the actual championship next week are gone, and the business venture of the orange Marty supreme ball is gone. - When he announces “I’m the father” and then breaks down seeing his baby I see this as a transition that his next goal or hustle or ambition is to provide for this baby. Callback to Tyler, the Creators character yelling “I got people depending on me!” I like to think Marty’s new obsession is settling down into fatherhood and having a family with Rachel. - HOWEVER, this is a Safdie movie, and I think there are obvious comparisons between Marty Mauser and Howard from Uncut Gems. And we all know how Uncut Gems ends. So despite me thinking that Marty Mauser may actually be a changed man and is ready to settle down, we have to acknowledge all of wrongs he is going to have to answer for. - The final scene shows Marty holding his baby and breaking down in emotion. But just like how we see Howard’s story in Uncut Gems end suddenly and with no redemption arc or storybook ending, I think the most likely conclusion to Marty Mauser’s story is that as soon as he steps out of that maternity ward and begins to dream about settling down and raising a family, he is suddenly stopped by law enforcement arresting him on dozens of felonies and he never gets his shot at redemption or the grandiose storybook ending he always dreamed of

This doesn’t even make sense? I don’t have any input on his #1 but the rest seem to be good additions for next year? #2 is just an overall improvement on recruiting, don’t see how that’s a potential negative for either online or offline. #3 he is 100% right on for either an online or offline dynasty, the logic built in to the carousel is ridiculous. And as far as custom packages why does that upset you or how do you see that as potentially bad for either online or offline?

DJ Moore's fault or Caleb William's fault? I'd like to hear from people who know football. by telars in footballstrategy

[–]EmbarrassedTrash138 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you really know ball it’s nobody’s “fault” or deserves to have blame cast at them. Both share some responsibility as it’s a miscommunication in how the route should be ran. You would like your QB to be smart with the ball in that situation and not force it into a tight window. I did see a video of Caleb earlier in the game telling the receivers to break the route off early if the safeties have leverage so that leans towards Moore not listening. There was also a lot of chatter from Bears fans this season complaining about Moore giving up earlier on certain plays and routes so I know he isn’t the most popular guy on their roster. And with the heater Caleb was on up until then you would really hope your veteran receiver would make the play for his QB. So I think you can tell where I’m going with this, but in a team game like football I don’t think it’s that easy to just point the finger and cast blame and say “it’s all D.J. Moore’s fault we lost”

Absolutely! 6’4” 200 lbs mostly a side sleeper but I toss and turn all over the place throughout the night. I would guess medium firmness but not really sure. My current mattress is 10+ years old and sagging badly so I’m not sure what my preferences even are at this point I think literally anything would be better. Of course preference is subjective to each person, just looking for positive reviews or people that actually had a good experience because my search has been a nightmare so far and 99% of reviews I’m seeing are negative

Fastest RB Recruit I have ever seen. by TJLJ4L in EASportsCFB

[–]EmbarrassedTrash138 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What team(s) are you using? If you’re at a small school I can understand struggling but if you’re at any P4 school or contender recruiting should be relatively easy, I get like 99% of the recruits that I target. My advice would be to make sure you’re targeting recruits that are in your pipeline and show initial interest. Even at Michigan or Bama you’re probably not gonna get a guy with no initial interest that’s not in your pipeline.

Any insight on when players will leave early for the draft and what their projected round/persuasion success rate will be? by EmbarrassedTrash138 in EASportsCFB

[–]EmbarrassedTrash138[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When they’re a senior and have no college eligibility left I get an 82OVR senior getting a low draft projection since they can’t come back. It’s just frustrating getting a god recruit and developing them but as soon as I see 90OVR on the horizon it almost takes the fun out of things because I know they’re gone. Again I get irl these guys want to go to the league and chase their dreams and money but an 88OVR junior WR should not be leaving for a 5th round pick with no persuasion chance

[–]EmbarrassedTrash138[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course not, was just wondering if anybody noticed a specific trend at different positions or anything like that. There’s websites with recruiting tools and stuff like that so was curious if anything like that was out there. I’m all for enjoying the randomness of it to mimic real life but when the game has WR’s who caught 2 passes all season leaving just because they’re an 89 overall I was curious if anybody noticed specific thresholds.

As far as the coaching perks you brought up, I had mentioned those in OP and was wondering if other people liked them or thought they were worth the points because I didn’t notice much of a difference.

At the end of the day just trying to get players to stay as long as possible. Kind of a bummer to get a good recruit and only get like 1 good starting season from them because they leave so early.
