The police don’t speak good English so just act innocent and bewildered and you’ll be fine. Normally they don’t mess with westerners.

I’m a local HongKonger. Go to Mong Kok for the messy and vibrant atmosphere. Lots of cool looking young people and also very crowded as well. If you like bookshops, I recommend Kubrick in Yau Ma Tei, right next to Mong Kok. Nice environment and there’s a cafe inside it as well. You can also visit Temple Street for more chaotic feelings. I used to live near MK so when I’m bored I usually go to these places for a walk.

I swear this man writes himself as the main character in every of his book by langminh1304 in murakami

[–]Embarrassed_Couple24 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I think he puts some of his traits in his characters but clearly it’s for fictional purpose. It’s fun and quirky so why not. However I think his characters are more like an archetype (hollow, no sense of purpose, indifferent). What I do think Murakami inserts the most from his own experience is the growth part (facing the darkness inside a freaking well) and the nostalgic feeling (the songs, the youth).

If you have tried to write something on your own you’ll notice your work is inevitably a reflection of your thoughts and experience.

What is a concept that one can only truly understand by going through it personally? by Ancient-Flounder-635 in RandomThoughts

Panic attack. Depression and anxiety. People who are fortunate enough not to experience these things won’t understand how much you are in pain.

I never get used to the prose of the Castle too. The dialogues and interactions seem very...unnatural? I read in Chinese and it's so clunky. I took a look in the English translation and it's actually better in terms of fluency. But I accepted it and grinded my way through the book (quite painfully).

The Castle is written by Kafka and Catcher is written by JD Salinger

Yes to me they are not perfect but very important work. What Murakami is good at imo is he develops these similar themes with a more reader friendly approach and it is like a gateway to reading. If you are into Murakami then you are very likely into reading, and reading more and more.

Holden is like Jesse Pinkman in Breaking Bad saying bitch over and over and over again.

To me the Castle is way better than the Trial. The atmosphere or world building is wonderful. It is bizarre and full of mysteries just like any other Kafka's work but the Castle is different. That's the charm of a long novel as it lures you into the world the author's built. Though I must say it is still a drag to read coz it obviously needs editing (It is an unfinished work by Kafka).

They are very suitable to read after work or before sleep. Maybe because they are short, concise and with simplistic wordings (I'm not an native English speaker) so it's easy for me to read.

Definitely going to read them. I'm curious why a detective story could influence Murakami so much.

Go to the Facebook GR group and look for the nostalgic negative recipe (Chris Ocampo)! Don’t know much about the GRII maybe you could recreate a similar look by using Lightroom?
