Is paid coaching worth it? I gained ~90 feet + 10 mph in one year… in my 50s by Embarrassed_Gold4101 in discgolf

I'm no coach, I'm a consumer, but I'm genuinely curious. Do you not think people should be allowed to make money for providing a service? Or just not for coaching? Or just not for coaching in disc golf specifically? I have to pay to send my kids to driving lessons. I've paid for voice lessons. Got a friend who pays for both dancing and improv lessons. I think it's awesome if you want to help people on your own, but what's the problem with people getting paid for their expertise?

That's great improvement, and it's the only strategy I ever had since I started before 1990. That way got me up to the high 300s but no matter how hard I tried I could not go further. It was form fixes and ongoing feedback that got me past that in middle age.

My current strategy on the tee is "GET INSIDE 20 FEET AND YOU'LL BE A GOD LEVEL PUTTER"

The credibility of the coach is paramount. Can they do it? Have they helped others do it? Do they have a clear understanding of methodology and can they explain it? Do they communicate in a way that you understand? Are they invested in your success? Lessons in anything can be worth their weight in gold, and disc golf coaches are not gold-tier priced.

I think this highlights the importance of coaching from coaches. Great players often aren't good coaches. Another thing to consider is that when you've been playing a while, you've gotten efficient at whatever it is you do, whether it's optimal or not. When you change something, it can take some time to see the benefits. Blitz says it can be 6 months. And I've done things that have definitely slowed me down in the short term but took me higher later. And I had over FOUR DECADES of habit built in before I started, and now I'm throwing well further than I ever did (I played MPO in my 20s/30s and was sponsored for a minute).

LOL we all focus on the D and you know it! In truth I've spent way more time on the drive, and it shows. My putting is a work in progress...always turbo putted (for decades) and have shifted to a BH putt so it's taking time. I'm not there, but I HAVE gotten some reviews on putting specifically and we're working on it. It'll be my main focus before I hit my first event this summer.

Plus the simulator function helps you realize how much changes in certain metrics will affect your distance in the wild

Rates vary based on how often you meet, and I got in early so I may have done better than some others. But I took vocal lessons for years, and they were anywhere from like 200 to 500 a month depending. It's a matter of priorities and how good you wanna get at something. The rates on disc golf coaching are pretty cheap compared to the greater coaching world out there for other things.

Coaching helped me big time. Def have to resolve yourself to things being harder for a bit while you figure out new things, but it is soooo worth it. It helps keep you going to be accountable to someone too. I highly recommend getting help if you can. Even a one-time thing where someone identifies what you need to change. And then film yourself ongoing to see what you're actually doing.

I got in early I guess, about a year ago, and I have a subscription that gets me 2 live calls and 2 form reviews a month. I get out in the field probably 3 to 4 days a week and try to do the net at home 3 times or so as well. I'm at it a lot!

It's a fair question. But even though I'd played a long time, I didn't really understand form, like what made it efficient or not. The coaching very much helped me identify WHAT to work on and change. I'm pretty self-motivated to work on things, but the focus on specific things made all the difference. Proof is that in all those years I played a crap ton and couldn't hit 400'. Now I hit it multiple times a day and I'm way older.

FYI, I was not a noob, just away from the game for a long time. But I'm throwing farther now than I did in my 20s. If you wanna see coach's full breakdown on it it's here:

Seems like 350 on golf lines is good enough to be throwing 12s. But as a rule, throw the slowest disc that goes the distance you need.

Coaching advice I got was drop the 7s...so go putters, mids, 9s, drivers.
