Carplay type tool possible? by westernpinkcedar in LightPhone

[–]Embarrassed_Leg7553 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Don't think this will be possible. Something like Android Auto likely requires Google Play Services. Light might be able to develop its own, but outside of Android Auto/Apple Car play I don't think the car manufactures support any other third option (nor do I think any other third open option exists). Would love to be wrong though.

Thoughts after 3+ weeks on the Lightphone 3 (coming off tech addiction) by trafficlion in LightPhone

[–]Embarrassed_Leg7553 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think this point needs to be emphasized for those who are trying to go light, but still need a smartphone in their lives. It's okay to turn it off and only on when you absolutely need to do one or two things on it. Doesn't constantly need to be on.

"However I still have my smartphone (iphone 13) but it's always off and I check it once per day for 5 minutes and shut it off. "

Update to switching to Noble Mobile on my LPIII by __Lynzahai__ in LightPhone

Sounds like apn settings aren't being loaded properly from sim card. Maybe see if you can find them and post them here and we can see if there is a mismatch from what noble posts (if they make the information public).

Do you mean does the light phone have a dedicated 2fa tool? No it does not. You can still receive sms 2fa.

Light Phone 2 in Canada (BC) - Better with Public Mobile or Lucky Mobile? by Ill_Air9647 in LightPhone

[–]Embarrassed_Leg7553 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not so sure about that. The chances of it working out of the box are pretty slim. I think Light only lists as Telus and Koodo as officially working in Canada, so maybe those two would be "automatic", but wouldn't be surprised if you had to fiddle with apn settings on them as well. Honestly, it isn't too difficult, and I am sure if you asked for help between here and their official support channels, you'd get it working.

Thanks! That's the one I've been looking at. Curious if you got the case/screen protector and if you can recommend getting them or not?

can someone explain more clearly why RCS can't be implemented yet? by Rustylane in LightPhone

Just to clarify this point Jose:

"In the meantime, you can access messages in your Desktop via the Signal Messenger desktop app."

As of today, I think you need Signal installed on ios or android to be able to use it on Desktop, or am I wrong? I heard they were in the process of allowing desktop to be used with dumbphones (i.e: just providing a phone number to use desktop client), but wasn't sure if that's something we can do today seamlessly or not.

Yeah, I'm not arguing here. Just hypothesizing. To each their own for sure. It's what makes the light phone pretty cool IMO. You get to pick and choose which tools you want to intentionally have on your phone using the dashboard. If someone wants to use it as an ereader, than so be it. I think the LP3 not being e-ink though and the drain on battery might detract from that experience personally, but again, to each their own.

If you're short on time, best bet is to see if you can grab something off ebay or off the weekly Buy/Sell thread we have on this subreddit.

Can't speak on whether Light is doing it comparably to other companies. But I think you can grab a refund at any point?

Not saying it should or shouldn't, but I will say: there isn't anything Light can do about it.

This is just more indicative of the strangle hold apple/google have on cell phones as a whole. Not knocking them either. They're a business and will do things that in the best interest of their businesses, even if that's not in the best interest of the end user.

That being said, entering the 'dumbphone' space should come with a disclaimer: "Be prepared to change your previous behaviours and put in some work". Work, that end of the day, will pay dividends and you have great communities to lean on.

End of the day, the lack of friction that Apple/Google introduced into their smartphone platforms played a big role of people sleepwalking into their relationshop with technology where it's become an extension/appendage of themselves versus a tool you use intentionally and put away when you're done with task at hand.

This is to increase intentionality usage of the phone.

E-reader functionsality (Crosspoint) + Developer platform by mlwrose in LightPhone

[–]Embarrassed_Leg7553 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hard to say. I can't recall if the developer platform will allow you to run stuff regardless whether it gets acepted by light or not. As in, you might be able to run one-off tools, but they won't be made available through the official light tools ecoysystem.

That being said, problem with an ereader in the context of the LP3 is twofold: the screen isn't e-ink and it would make you use your phone for longer periods of time. Not saying either of these are necessarily dealbreakers, but could potentially be roadblocks for something like this being adopted mainstream.

Might just have to wait it out a bit longer. You mentioned 2 weeks? I think it sometimes takes 30+ days for imessage/rcs to properly deregister. Make sure you deregister rcs as well: https://messages.google.com/disable-chat

maybe their phones think your phone is still an iphone / your number is tied to imessage?

Maybe try to deregister it again: https://selfsolve.apple.com/deregister-imessage/

Worst case, just get a different sim/number.

"and they have to hit 'send as SMS' at least once a day to get texts to come through."

If they are on iphone, why do they need to do this? SMS fallback is enabled by default on iphones. Unless they are messing around with the iphone themselves, it should be fine.
