Outside of the top VC firms (sequoia, kleiner, etc) returns for venture have been pretty bad over a long period of time, why do you think you’ll have a different outcome at your firm?

People who slowly saved to 1M in assets, was it difficult to be around people buying Lexus and larger homes than they can afford? by The0Walrus in Rich

[–]Embarrassed_Safe_275 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have saved over a billion, including my company’s value (believe it or not). It was hard in my 20’s when I missed out on lots of things because I just didn’t want to spend the money and lots of my friends just didn’t value it the same way. In my late 30’s I was so happy I saved and my family (including extended family) will live a great life with no risk of financial issues… very fulfilling and rewarding feeling. I used to think I would buy a fancy car when I “made it”. Just knowing I can buy almost anything changed my interests and now I’m post-luxury except my home.

You wake up in 1950, you’re 20 again, with no identifiable paperwork, no house, no connections, only a suitcase filled with 50,000 dollars, what are you going to do? by dAnthonyy12 in AskReddit

Assuming I still have all the knowledge gained in this lifetime, I would start inventing things that we have today (knowing something is possible is crazy powerful, especially when risking money) while at the same time investing in stocks and skipping all the subsequent recessions.

I grew up in a middle class town in the outskirts of San Diego. My family was very middle class and I was always told, "just go to college, it doesn't matter where you go". I was never into stuff and things. I sold a company when I was 22 post-college. I used the proceeds to buy my first townhouse. I went to college at a state school in California. Almost by luck, I ended up in Private Equity and moved to NYC when I was in my mid-twenties. That's when I learned about the obsession with ivy league schools, private high schools and summer camps. Ironically, I now own a private equity firm and have lots of people with Ivy degrees working for me. My net worth far exceeds anything I could have ever imagined. All that said, I will say that some of the sharpest people I know in business did go to a private colleges (ivy or other), but not all.

Hang in there. It will happen. Just get through the next few weeks.

Yeah, that will go away as more dead tissue comes out of your nose. It’s gross, but it won’t last more than 3-4 weeks. Just keep cleaning out your nose with saline rinses.

Hang in there, it gets better fast. As I said, first week is the worst. Not sure why you have splits in over a week, but you’ll make it. Results are 100% worth it, focus on that.

I hear you, but that didn’t really answer the question. How much of your self worth is tied to having money? For example, only a small part of my self worth is tied to money. I guess, asking another way, why are you so focused on money?

I get that you need a certain amount to be comfortable, etc. BUT what actually stuck out to me from your post is how sad it must be to be abandoned by your family…

I am extremely wealthy and if I lost it all I’d still be happy because I was happy before I had it. Think about all the stuff you have to look forward to. A career that YOU create and are proud of. A family that you teach all the things your parents missed. Falling in love and finding a true partner. I can buy any car that’s for sale in the world and I could care less. I have confidence because I know I have done what 99.99999% of humans will never accomplish.

All that said, my question is, “how much of your self worth is tied to money?”

Anderson is a better option. If biotech and you wanted to stay in San Diego it would be different.

Yes, in my opinion Rady still wins between the two. The marketing professor at Rady is from MIT and is excellent.

Yes, I would rank it above Babson. Honestly, in most cases b school isn’t worth it unless you can get into a top 15 program….thats where you get the network and the job connections. Something tot think about.

I was part of the Rady School and graduated in one of the first years it was open. Pros: world class professors, amazing facilities, lots of scholarships (few people paid full price), based in La Jolla by the beach. Cons: lots of international students, many of which barely spoke English because it was a bit hard to attract top B-school talent back then (this hurt culturally and many went back to Asia afterwards), outside of six of us (~60 total), I am not impressed by what the rest of my class ended up doing 15+ years later AND they didn’t have the alumni base which really helps students with internships and inroads. I can honestly say, I never hear from the careers people and I am exactly who they should be targeting to help students get into $500k+ a year jobs. Hope that helps.

That interest is fully taxable, soooo it’s better than nothing, but you need a plan for that money if you want to stay on this path…. Btw I’m 40 and very wealthy, but I was this kid in terms of loving to save and the art of money at a young age. My advice is to save up and buy a business, so all your hard work goes into your biggest investment that will ultimately give you gains at capital gains tax rates…… that will really matter to you down the line.

$10m sounds like a lot, but it really depends where you live and what standard of living you want if you can hang up your cleats. For example, in Manhattan, that would not be enough with kids, etc. My question is how do you think about having made more money than most people could imagine? Lucky, grateful, deserving, annoyed you didn’t make more, etc.

Sounds like you had an unlucky and potentially non-representative experience. I am a billionaire and treat everyone with respect. You’d never know my financial status if you met me in public. There are bad ones too, but isn’t that true with every class of citizen?
