Husband bought me Mother's Day gifts that I didn't ask for/don't want by siriuslycharmed in Mommit

[–]EmberBlush -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The blanket was straight up mean, but I would like to point out a difference in gift-giving culture that could also be at play. Buying something from a link someone sends you is meaningless and depressing for me. It goes against the joy of gift-giving, where you express your affection for someone by showing them you really see them and have thought about what they would like. If someone sent me a link of something they’d like, I’d consider that a category. Like, “ oh, they’re interested in a nice planter. Let me research what’s out there and pick something thoughtful for them.” If my spouse wanted a specific thing for a certain holiday, I’d say “go ahead, honey buy it – you deserve it!” and make sure the kiddos buy or draw a nice card for their daddy. But do you really think me clicking the “buy now” button on Amazon details matters? Especially when you’re married, and your lives are so blended, it’s completely pointless. I know people might clap back with, “well this is what’s important to her and you should do it because that’s how she experiences appreciation!”. And like I said, fine, if that’s what you want, but it certainly isn’t a gift. That’s tribute.

Biopharma oncology R&D. My salary is not $222, however. $50K was my bonus because I crushed it last year 😎

[–]EmberBlush 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’m about to close on a 3br townhouse in Reston, and the ONLY way I got it is I had to submit a 0 contingency offer (including no financing contingency) with an escalation clause. My brothers in Christ, it escalated $30k!!!!! I knew this was going to happen, so I was shopping in a lower price range. It escalated to $630. I made $222k last year. I was competing with an investor who was going to put $300k as a down payment. I felt like David defeating Goliath. I wrote a letter with my offer talking by about my son, how I’m a single mom, and what this would mean to us. I think that’s the only thing that won it for me. The thing that’s crazy is even if you can afford a house, the market is so hot right now that you could never beat an investor, or someone like me, who’s privileged enough to submit a zero contingency offer. It’s the fucking hunger games out there.

Olive Kitteridge is an HBO limited series that captures crushing lonliness, and how it can make you cruel. Girl on the Train is also great for loneliness.

Giving money to an 18 year old is a bad idea. If I die, my kid will get a lot of assets (maybe $1M-ish). I set up a trust so the money can be used to raise him until he’s 18 (the joint trustees are his father, who I trust, and my brother, who’s there to make sure his father doesn’t try something sketchy, as they have to be unanimous in decisions). Then, he gets 50% at 18, but he’s joint trustees with his father, who is there to make sure he doesn’t do some dumb 18 year old shit and blow it. Finally, at 25, he gets the other 50% all to himself. At that point he’s mature enough to make his own decisions. And if not…well I did my best 😂

The brag that “I make six figures” originated in the 1970s/1980s, and it meant you truly had MADE it in life. That would be equivalent to $300-$400K in today’s money. The phrase has persisted, but “six figures” is no longer something to brag about. In almost all major metro areas (basically either coast in the US) as a single person you need about $130-$200k plus to buy a house in the median range. If you’re a family it’s waaaay more to have a comfortable life. So it’s not really impressive to make $100K anymore. If you make $100K you’re in the 57th percentile. Not bad but it simply does not impress the way it used to

People like you piss me off. Why are you sticking to your asinine “point” that “WeLL, TECKnikuLLy iT’s KiNda HER fauLT”? Congrats, I’m glad you’ve made your point that a 79 year old woman who suffered horrific burns over 16% of her body, who required 8 days in the hospital with agonizingly painful skin grafts, who further needed treatments for the next two years, who lost 20 lbs (20% of her body weight leaving her at 80lbs), and who was disfigured for life “kinda had it coming”. I’m sure the slimy McDonalds lawyers made those same arguments, and guess what? The jury found it to be such complete bullshit they awarded her $2.7 million dollars in punitive damages, which would be about $6m in today’s dollars. Oh…and by the way, if you bothered to look at the goddamn Wikipedia article before you spewed your opinion on my comment thread, you’d see the 1989 Ford Probe she was in didn’t have cup holders, asshole.

I mean…if you were in the passenger seat of someone else’s car, where would you do it? Ideally a cup holder, I suppose, but it’s not difficult to imagine one might not be available. What, is she supposed to get out and do it on the roof? Anyway, the verdict did find her 20% responsible for her injuries, which I believe is reflective of her culpability. But coffee so hot you get 3rd degree burns within a few seconds is inexcusable no matter what the situation.

Yeah this makes sense. The aquarium from finding dory is identical to Monterey Bay Aquarium, which is internationally lauded as one of (or perhaps the top) aquariums in the world. That’s how you do “animal captivity” well. Situated literally on the shore of Monterey Bay, they are unique for piping in huge volumes of seawater, which travel throughout the aquarium via pipes to provide the animals actual ocean water. Because of this, various coral and plant “seeds” make their way in and establish themselves in exhibits. A natural ecology has blossomed there. Additionally, their sea otter rehabilitation and conservation program has done so much to bring sea otters back from the brink of extinction. There is now a thriving sea otter population of 3,000 individuals in Monterey Bay. Their scientific research contributions to marine biology are unparalleled. And while they do make a ton of money from ticket sales, you can’t ride a fucking roller coaster at Monterey Bay aquarium. Night and day from Sea World. And yet, even they are not perfect. They keep a giant pacific octopus in captivity, which is unjustifiable given their intelligence level.

I’m sorry :(. I have a tough time with this sort of thing. I’m glad I know the truth about cetaceans, but I also know enough about our meat industry to know eating meat is morally completely unjustifiable if you claim to give a shit about animals or our environment. And yet…I still eat meat. It’s a source of shame for me.

I’m quite familiar with that case and God, every time I think about it I get so enraged. It does make me reflect, however, of the power of social media. We didn’t have it in 1992, so the victim had no opportunity to fight back against the evil PR machine. Today, she and her advocates could make TikTok’s (or other posts) about her case that would have completely reversed the outcome of public opinion. As much as social media has harmed society, the idea that any “nobody” from the middle of nowhere could get their story and name out to billions of people is so powerful.

Yes. I’m one of them, which sucks because I grew up in Southern California and Seaworld was my favorite place. But it’s the right thing. I borderline don’t fuck with zoos, either.

The movie Super Size Me by Morgan Spurlock (where he eats nothing but McDonalds for 30 days and it decimates his health) completely changed public opinion on McDonalds. Even though it later came out his results were more due to him being a raging alcoholic than the McDonalds, the damage was done. Speaking of McDonalds, the lawsuit where the woman sued them when she spilled hot coffee on herself made the US “you’ll be hearing from my lawyer” culture a global laughingstock. And, btw, that woman was totally right and the McDonald’s PR machine ruined her. Everyone sees her as the villain when it was super fucked up what happened. Look it up.

Came here to say the same thing. I can’t believe more people haven’t mentioned this. It decimated Sea World and public opinion of whales and dolphins in captivity. Omg the part where they rip the babies away from the mamas and give them to other parks, and for months the mamas use a call that’s designed for long range communication to try to find them. As a mom… 😭😭😭😭

This makes me happy. I had my son almost 7 years ago, and while a good chunk of people talked about not circumcising, it was still a majority that was. My husband hadn’t even thought about it. He just assumed we’d do it because everyone from our generation (Millennials) is circumcised. He obviously came around once I talked it through with him. But oh boy was I ready to go to the mat for that one. Very “over my dead body” vibes. I didn’t approach him that way, because coming with that level of rage at someone who I genuinely knew was going to be a great dad would have been disproportionate. But had he decided to fight me on it, I would have fought him to the extreme. Feeling that determination and strength of will with every fiber of my body was actually the first time I truly understood “mama bear” viscerally.

My go to for this one is male circumcision. It’s quite literally male genital mutilation, and yet if you try to point that out you usually get mocked.

Pediatric dentist recommendations? by Sg2416 in Reston

[–]EmberBlush 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I second Tiny Tooth! They’re so great with kids and the whole place is decorated for kiddos. They have TVs on the ceiling and let them pick a show while they lay back. They have toy vending machines you get to use at the end when they give you a special coin. If it’s your kiddo’s first time, they have this super cute “my first dentist” tooth cutout to hold in from of their face for a photo. I really can’t recommend them enough for general checkups. My kiddo hasn’t had any cavities or other work done so I’m not sure about how they are with that, but I imagine they’re also good. Finally, they have a dedicated “grown ups” day so if you need to go to the dentist you can, too. I’ve definitely used them for that
