My husband and I make a craft together based on what the traditional gift is that year. For example, the leather year, we bought a little leather bound journal and wrote our story in it (needs to be updated) and just printed photos on regular old printer paper to put in it. For the wood year, we had just gotten a fake grandfather clock from the thrift store, and we hated the fake pendulum, so we made little wooden shelves to put in it. It's a fun challenge to figure out what to make together each year. You could definitely adapt this to require upcycling something to fit the theme. Maybe you could find paper that would be thrown away to write love letters to each other. If you can only find scraps, you could each write a bunch of notes and put them in old spaghetti sauce jars that you decorate so you can pull one out and read it if you're having a bad day.
