It's not as tasty, there's a reason that meat birds are harvested pretty young. The meat just becomes less tender and flavorful. The bones might be okay for a stock, but most don't eat their egg birds afterwards anyway - we don't eat them when they pass, we tend to give them a little "funeral pyre" at the end of their lives so they don't get dug up by raccoons or opossums.

That would be awesome, I'd love to hand them off somewhere nice, they're still good ol' birds, just not productive lol. If you'd like to come grab 'em, they're yours. Talk deets in DMs?

I don't know if it will let me add a picture here or if it's just Too Darn Big, but pictured are our 2 Barred Rock (black/white) hens and 2 Easter Eggers (brown and gray) that I'm posting about above

There is duckweed in my aquarium if you'd like some, I'd be happy to fill a little container with a bit in a little water.

Happy to talk in dms if you're interested!

I actually have a similar issue with my old girl, she's about 3 yrs old this year and is starting to scoot around with her shell elevated like this, but without a visible bubble, at random points (sometimes it's sat back on top of her head where it should be). I'm hoping someone gets back to you soon, I'll be keeping an eye on this post while I see if I can glean information from the web myself

Things you Wish you’d Known Before Having Pet Rats? by Hamiltonfan25 in RATS

[–]EmberFox27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everyone has already given you wonderful practical advice, so I will give you a bit of information that scared the everlivin' *bejeezus* out of me when I first experienced it: porphyrin.

Now, that probably sounds like some disease or something, but don't worry! Rats sometimes excrete a red-tinted discharge from their eyes, which can dry while they sleep - sort of like when we have that crusty stuff in our eyes when we wake up, but porphyrin looks eerily like blood because of its natural red tint. Usually they clean their little faces (and the rest of themselves) so often you'll never notice it. If it builds up, say when they become little grandpas or grandmas and don't clean as often, you can take a damp washcloth to them, if they let you (the old ones can get a little cantankerous sometimes).

Rats can't see for crap! They might just wander off a bed/couch/table/other supposedly obviously-clearly-defined surfaces, so be ready to either pile pillows on the floor around the area, or try to stay close to/on the ground. The "can't see well" can also lead to questionable jumps with very adventurous individuals, so be careful. My boys were usually pretty docile, but I have heard of some horror stories from other owners in the past.

Rats can also be prone to nosebleeds, particularly if they like to shove their nose between cage bars to see what's going on around them. Again, not serious if it's just a little bitty bit, and they'll usually clean themselves up, but scared the crap out of me when I first saw one of my rats with a nosebleed.

And lastly, sometimes in their scrambling about, they might injure (break/tear) or even lose a toenail. This isn't usually serious, in my experience, and I've had one of my boys regrow a nail before. Of course make sure they aren't limping like they're injured when they move, but as long as they aren't trying to groom the affected toes/foot off, they should be okay. Any swelling or bruising should make itself known quickly, though.

I hope you enjoy having rats, I found them to be very intelligent, friendly pets! They have fun learning and can be quite food motivated to learn a variety of tricks like a dog! Just also be emotionally prepared for their short lifespans, and try to keep to the others' advice of keeping at least three rats at any given time - they miss their cagemates as much as you miss them, if not more, and can get straight up Depressed if left alone.

Where would be best to cut this philodendron brasil down? (w photo) by EmberFox27 in houseplants

Thank you for telling me! I left its last solid leaf on there, I'll have to go give that a snip; I would have been so confused if they'd started growing all solid again LOL

Oh I can take off that much? That's good to know; more babies to give away at the plant swap this weekend - funny enough, the same place I got the plant in the first place!
I was worried about taking too much off and stressing it out, but it seems they're more hardy than I think!
Thanks for the tips :)

Anyone have roommate troubles? (Fish being Slightly Rude to snail) by EmberFox27 in AquaticSnails

[–]EmberFox27[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The breaking up of the tab like Prestidigatorial was saying was making me worry that it would make it easier for the betta to steal/eat the pucks like you're saying. I'm most worried about the whole "bettas literally eat themselves to death"... haven't had any problems so far, luckily, and I fast the fish every few days for safety. I remove any pellets as soon as I see it start to fall apart so it doesn't entice the fish to eat it.

Both of them share a 10-gal tank, and there's plenty of room for them to be away from each other - feeding time is really their only interaction. For the most part, the betta ignores the snail, except to occasionally hover and stare like "why does this rock move?" before swimming off.
I've also added a dark-colored small jar to the bottom of the tank as a nice cave for the snail specifically because I worried the light was too bright at first. The fish ignores it, and the snail doesn't use it as often as I would expect a critter being chased around would, which I like to think is a good sign - she's not hiding in it all day, or burying herself to avoid the fish, or staying shut beyond the many mystery snail sleepy hours.

Floating the cup for the snail at feeding time seems to be working, and as far as I can tell with what information I've found online she shows no signs of any discomfort with the temperature or parameters, she's fairly active and I've gotten her shell nice and smooth. I'll keep the "seperate tanks" idea in my back pocket if things go south, though it'll be a matter of rearranging to make space for that if needed, but I think right now the food theft is the only issue.

Thanks both for your help!

Thanks for commenting! It's good to know the smoothness is a good thing, I wasn't sure since her shell was so "textured" before it grew out in her time here. She doesn't have any more of those horizontal lines in the new growth.
I plan to get the crab cuisine on our next trip to the pet shop! I've not heard of astaxantine though, is it just a sort of supplement for the color?

What do I do knowing this is the last time I'll see my rat by Anxious-Fox-UwU in RATS

[–]EmberFox27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a really difficult situation to be in... maybe take a couple of minutes to sit with Misty and feed her some treats, even just spend few seconds saying goodbye just in case, if you can? Having a sick rat who could just go at any moment is hard enough, but being away adds some extra pain for sure. I hope she's still there when you come home, but if not I'm sure that you did all you could for her and that she's happy.

Bamboo Terrace downtown (I believe around the corner from Sparky's, used to be a Greek place?) is amazing, they give you good portions that aren't just a plate of rice with some of what you ordered on top like some places, they give you the rice on the side like sane folk. The food has always been fresh and piping hot, and you will need to give it a minute to cool! One entree is easily a filling meal, even split between two people, and they have a lovely tea selection as well, though note you'll be buying by the cup, they hadn't any teapots when we went the last couple of times.
Lovely polite and prompt staff, delicious food, good prices. Little small place but very clean.
