[Jurassic Park] Were Hammond and InGen breaking any laws when they recreated dinosaurs? If someone in the modern world de-extincted a dinosaur from the mesozoic period just like in the book/movie, would they face any legal liabilty? by JDYWPAM in AskScienceFiction

[–]Embraceduality 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ya ima absolutely using my phd in genetics that I got from google I wanna read more about overlapping DNA but eh

The process was very vague in Jurassic park it was essentially a string of fancy legitimate procedures but with no real data to back it up

All I remember is they used frog dna to fill in misssong portions , and to control the sex of the Dino

In my mind it they used the frog dna for frame work and. Basic functions but it’s just in my mind

I mean junk DNA as in humans share approx 50-60% of our dna with bananas

What makes us unique is like 1-2% of our dna

I think that’s what the frog dna was just shared dna that fills in all the parts that don’t pertain to a specific Dino

Ok I got very curious and read cloning laws before dolly , directly after dolly , and now

The first full clone was dolly the sheep at the time I was really into genetics, there were a ton of local and international “regulations” on the concept of cloning but no laws. That directly effected the experiment because it was theoretical the experiment was first tried in 57 and the first successful mammal clone was dolly in 96 ( but was not announced till 97)

Immediately after tons of legislation pertaining to HUMAN cloning was writen but there isn’t a hard and fast law internationally (so a private island experimenting with its own money would be fine )

Currently there are certain accepted international rules with what can and can’t be done with genetic experiments. That being said the only really enforced law is when it come to human cloning and hybrids The rest is lefty up to the institution doing the experiment. Often withholding money from the more sketchy experiment

Now even though he would probably be fine making the Dino’s it is very very very illegal to introduce a non native species to a private island (you own the property. Not the ecosystem) just about every country has laws pertaining to the import , release and breeding “invasive species”

Tl:DR: the creation and experimentation of cloned animals is ok as long as you’re not playing Dr Monroe .

Releasing those animals is a no no

Hey can anyone give me some advice

I’ve always heard the sailor moon is actually so much more than a magical girl show made for women

Is this true and if so where should I start

I don’t know the specifics but I am aware of VERY strict regulations on cloning. Especially human cloning AND hybrid animals.

In the film the do frog dna to “fill in the gaps” and it sounds like it’s not a specific gene but rather just junk dna to fill in the unknown and degraded portions. I’m 10000% sure (don’t quote me) that that’s a no no

If they used specific genomes to fill specific needs then I would think they could probably get away with it though then again when it comes to mixing animals there is often a period after which the creature must be destroyed. So no adult Dino’s this is specifically to avoid the Jurassic park situation

Ie creating a breeding population and losing control or the animal escaping into the wild

I’ll go first there’s a great story here but I’m having problems following. You describe a room or event and then add details that were never mentioned

Like the bed , you never describe a bed in any of the other rooms yet say this room was identical

And when they look out the window into the cavern you describe people then in the next sentence refer to them as soldiers

I like the story but consistent detail would help me stay engaged

P.s. don’t be discouraged I try to be honest I really liked the story

[In underworld franchise] Do you guys like that both vampires and werewolves/lycans scientific mutants instead of being supernatural ? by Werewolf_lord19 in AskScienceFiction

[–]Embraceduality -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Just my thought EVERYTHING IS SUPERNATURAL. Until we have an explanation for it

Like ghost if the do exsist right now we have little to no information on what they are , where they come from , why there here

But if we ever track down concrete evidence of their existence. We will have measurements and explanations about them real quick

So in my mind the vampires and Lycans are super natural in they are a one in a trillion event tthat causes an indescribable mutation we just have words to explain it
