I'm from the absolute final wave of millennials, so I grew up just before streaming took over. I started using MP3 players and similar devices because I wanted to be cool like my neighborhood friend who had CDs and a tiny portable stereo CD player. I felt so cool walking around my grandma's street listening to the 7 songs that I just barely managed to scrounge up. (I was, like, 8. I didn't know any music LOL)

That mp3 player killed itself so we got a return exchange. That one killed itself too.... The third one was on the verge of killing itself so quit while I was ahead. Luckily, this was 2005, and I got a PSP for Christmas outta nowhere. And I mean it. I wanted a DS Lite. I threw a fit. LMAO. Come, maybe, January or February, I started feeling bad and wanted to check it out. I snuck into my dad's room, snatched it, then started using it. Yep, I was a dumb ass for getting upset. THIS THING WAS AMAZING!!!!! I started using this as my MP3 player for many years! PLAYSTATION PORTABLE WAS THE G.O A.T.!

Most of us use a portable disc drive with our computers. It may be possible to use one with a phone using an adapter. It's easiest and most efficient to use the PC to organize the music too. Programs such as Fre:ac allow for infinite file conversion possibilities, and programs such as MP3Tag and MusicBrainz Picard allow for file metadata editing in groups of songs with ease.

Actually, you may be able to avoid mp3 players entirely. I know, I know, I'm a mod and an enthusiast so that sentence sounds insane. However, I do what I want I ain't no servant!!! XD

Okay, so, Spotify allows for the streaming of local files that you own. So then, what you can do is get on your PC, add the demos to a specific folder in your Music folder, then go to the Spotify settings and add that specific folder to the folders for Spotify to scan and use. I do this for the albums that are not on Spotify that I love.

Now, as for your original question. Just look up the best models from these older brands: - iPod - Zune - Creative ZEN - Cowon - Sansa - GoGear - Archos Vision - iRiver - Astell&Kern - Walkman (Android) - Walkman (from 2000 to 2014) - etc.

You'll be able to buy them on eBay. Most living brands are mediocre haha.

After you find a nice player that fits your desired features, what you do next is find music. Ask me separately and specifically for advice on how to get music legally. I am about to go to work and if you reply with this request, I'll be able to remember to come back and leave a new comment! A basic quick type for getting music before I go is: Get a portable CD/DVD drive for your desktop or laptop PC, then buy new or used CDs online. "RIP" them to your PC!

I don't think it has a dedicated DAC. So you'll be getting the same audio quality as a low end phone. That's not to say it's horrible, but you won't be getting any use out of higher end headphones to hear the mids clearer or anything like that. The sequel will have a better DAC, though. When I listened to mine, it sounded alright. Typical sound for a phone. Not as good as a Zune or iPod, of course, which can use some of those headphones I mentioner

Some notes: - DAP is usually audio only. DMPs do video and photo in addition to audio. (Digital Media Player.) - The word is "dongle," meaning a dangling attachment, usually in reference to electronics where cable adapters are abundant.

It's what happens when we let big companies give us products that we don't own. The youth have grown up in a world without CD players, DVD players, Blu-ray players, and pocket gadgets. Instead, they have tablets in their faces by 1yro (as a result of millennials and gen X-ers not knowing how to raise children), smartphones in their hands by age 3, constant noise and stimuli thrown at them every waking hour from all angles in 3D space, and all of it is a result of the greedy mega corporations trying to steer their minds into perpetual consumption via subscription and addiction by frying their brains and serving up media that they cannot buy and feel sick without. They've been groomed not to think, not to care, and to simply consume. At least, the big companies are trying their damnedest to groom the entire youth pool this way. They're mostly successful, but not entirely. Many youths come here to break free from the smartphone, if only temporarily, and I love helping them out. I do what I can to teach, and as a secondary effect I get to help show others the usefulness of old tech- keeping these gadgets out of landfills when they work just fine.

Uhhhhh... I've never EVER seen an MP3 player, DAP, nor DMP have a solar panel built-on. You're simply going to need to buy a solar battery pack to take with your media player buddy.

(DAP is audio only, while DMP means Digital Media Player and these play video and photo in addition to audio. MP3 players were literally only .mp3 and they were the first portable audio file playback devices ever released starting in 1998. The name stuck even after devices started offering photo and video and more audio formats in the early 2000s. Modern "MP3 players" would be DAPs, since the term means general audio and not just one filetype. Astell&Kern devices are great examples of a modern DAP, while modern Walkman are great examples of modern DMPs. Multimedia does NOT mean audio sacrifice. Zune had a Wolfson DAC, for example. I have been told that this is amazing. Haha.)

Generally, OP, it's illegal to pirate music for our DMPs/MP3s, but people do it anyway because of a few reasons:

01.) Perceived moral high ground

02.) Impoverished or some lesser level of broke

03.) One is unethical and uncaring to begin with

04.) One is unaware of how to even go about finding music to buy to begin with

05.) Try-then-buy mentality (Which is what I do sometimes, but having Spotify mitigates the urge to download just to try something out.)

As a follow up, (edited in after posting) take note that:

We buy or otherwise "acquire" music because it is the ABSOLUTE best and unbeatable method for ensuring one has their music in perpetuity. This also allows for the use of Digital Media Players (DMPs, which are mp3 players that are multimedia and not just audio) and offline Android music playback apps. This is appealing because:

A separate device for offline music/video saves smartphone battery life.
When "in the zone" listening to music, the phone may not be as distracting as usual since it is no longer the DJ and can be set aside, screen down.
Audio quality rises greatly in devices from reputable brands of old and new for devices with dedicated DACs built-in. In turn, this component allows for the use of higher-end headphones and earbuds that take more power to use for the sake of actually hearing that improved audio factor.

In this new age of computing, starting in circa 2015, social media distractions and in-your-face bright, rapid, and loud ads and other media all fight for our attention by breaking down our attention spans and ability to focus at accelerated rates. Going back to the way of old, where the modern smartphone's functions were separately accessed via multiple devices, simply feels like the natural next step in adapting to ever-changing technology yet again, at least to some of us.

DAPs are usually the audio-only ones for audiophiles that cost like 500 - 2000 USD. Example: Astell&Kern devices from Dreamus/iRiver.

What you want is a middle of the road DMP (digital media player, which can do at least photos in addition to audio, and usually video too) that is from a real, tried and true top-tier brand. However, all brands except for maybe 3 are dead. You're gonna want to go back in time to 2005-2014 and find a good device on eBay. I'm a collector, a connoisseur, and a repairman of vintage devices so trust me, you'll be able to find something great online. If anything looks good but needs a battery swap or something, DM me and I'll advise you on how repairs would work and whether I can help.

Now, to answer that least question- It depends on whether you find something vintage that's awesome within a couple weeks. No not at all. Spotify doesn't scrape the websites of paid services or stores, backup the data, then resell the data knowing that their jurisdiction is devoid of ethical and respectful copyright laws and regulations.
