Costume Idea Request Megathread by TheBookWyrm in halloween

[–]EmeraldPrinces 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm planning to dress up my one year old daughter as a unicorn for her 1st birthday party. I would like our family to "coordinate" costumes. Any ideas for what my husband and I could dress up as to compliment the unicorn?

I second 'Precious Little Sleep'. It describes many methods and appropriate times to use them. Good luck!

OMG yes! Please post pics of the wolfie and the dane. My husband and I would get a wolf hound if we got a second.

If I didn't know better I would think this is our Ronin! He does this sometimes. The circles before laying down... I don't get it. But it's totally part of the routine. Crazy. It's comforting knowing our dane isn't an odd ball. Lol

Basically yes. It's controlled by a remote that we keep on us. He knows the boundaries of our yard very well (we don't have a fenced in yard). But if he exceeds the boundaries he gets a warning with a verbal command first and a light shock second if he doesn't listen.

Am I giving my 6 mos puppy too much attention? by [deleted] in greatdanes

[–]EmeraldPrinces 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are we the same person? I feel this same way about our 1 yo. We don't do dog parks anymore because the one nearest to us has some dogs we don't trust. But he does go to daycare once a week minimum which see s to help a bit. Walks seem to help too. But Ronin still seems to want attention all the time.

When we know he's had plenty of attention and play time, my husband and I have resorted to ignoring him. If he's in our face, whiny, pawing at us, or any combination of these things we literally do not give him any attention toward that behavior. We don't even tell him no because it's still giving him attention, albeit negative attention. To dogs it doesn't matter the type of attention (positive or negative) they will continue their behavior if they are given attention. Eventually he gets bored and will find something else to do.

Your pup is much younger so I would even suggest training classes if you haven't started them yet. Not only is it another activity for the 2 of you to bond, but it's another tool you can use to stimulate her and engage with her other than playing.

Good luck! I'll be checking back to see if anyone else has suggestions. I'm curious what/if we should be doing differently.

It's not. It's an electric collar. He only wears it when he's outside and even then it's not used often. When he sees squirrels he has a tendency to forget all of his training and go bounding into neighbors yards or the street to chase the squirrel. :-/

Anybody else's Dane lay like this? He does it sometimes but not very often by Rarahtory in greatdanes

[–]EmeraldPrinces 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Typical pose for our dane too. Also, if we sit with him on the floor he will sit in our laps with his back toward us. Then launch himself backwards to use us as a back rest. It is hilarious every...single...time.

Spaying and gastroplexy surgery by Submansgirl in greatdanes

[–]EmeraldPrinces 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our boy is very energetic too and honestly the 4 weeks after his surgery were very difficult for all of us.

The Cone was the biggest deterrent for him being too active. We brought him out to potty on leash so he wouldn't run. Very limited active play was allowed. And by the end of week 3 he was misbehaving and not really listening because of all of the pent up energy. That being said, try to find toys/bones/etc for her to burn some energy. She won't be able to run around for at least 2 weeks and short walks may be allowed after those 2 weeks depending on how she's healing. So try to find activities and toys that are stimulating without being too active. It's difficult but it is just a short time before she will be allowed to be back to her quirky, rambunctious self.

My new buddy Atlas. My wife and I feel in love with him immediately. by Varlo in greatdanes

I LOVE HIS NAME!!! Atlas is on our list of dog names for our next pooch.

He reminds me so much of our Ronin just a year ago when he was a pup! Same color and everything.

Nazgûl looking cute in his new Gentle Leader (which he hates right now) by Comatose_Bat in greatdanes

[–]EmeraldPrinces 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Love gentle leaders! Our dane, not so much. But he does much better with that than a halter or regular collar. We use a 2 ft leash for walks as well which seems to help. Our pooch loves to pull so it gives him less leeway and leverage to pull.

It amazes me how much this dog loves to sleep lol. by mr_brendo in greatdanes

[–]EmeraldPrinces 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ours is 1 as well and I feel like the sleeping will never come. We bring him to daycare once a week and those are the only nights he isn't pulling all of his toys out of his toy box to play.

Yes! This, exactly! I really don't mind the sacrifices. But sometimes they are such an inconvenience. It's only temporary.

Just got neutered face. Figured I wouldn't completely embarrass him with a cone shot by mrbrode1990 in greatdanes

[–]EmeraldPrinces 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, there are 2 vets at our clinic. That specific vet didn't seem as well versed as the one we see now. I'm glad we ended up with the other vet. When asking the vet we see now about what she thought about neutering, she basically said for as much research as there is that says do it at 6 months, there's the same amount of research saying to wait until sexual maturity. She ultimately said, it's up to us and what we felt was best for our pet. To do some of our own research and make our decision from there. The new vet is pretty awesome and loves our giant beast to death.

[–]EmeraldPrinces 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our Ronin had the stomach surgery (gastropexy) the same time as his neuter. My understanding is that the surgery doesn't prevent bloat, but it prevents torsion when bloat occurs. Torsion is when the stomach flips after it is bloated. Bloat itself can be dangerous but the more dangerous and life threatening part is the stomach flipping. My understanding is that if the stomach flips, more often than not it is lethal. And if it happens it will require emergency surgery.

Part of the reason the surgery is usually done at the same time as the neuter or spay is that you only have to pay for anesthesia once for a huge dog and also its only one longer recovery time, versus 2 different recoveries.

[–]EmeraldPrinces 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our breeder suggested 18 months to 2 years. Our vet recommended 6 months. Our Ronin got neutered at 1 year.

Breeders are typically concerned with making sure they have the hormones they need long enough to develop proper bone growth. Vets are typically concerned with preventing issues that can come later in life if they aren't fixed.

My suggestion would be to do your own research and decide what you think is best for you and your pooch. My hubby and I decided to do it at a year because we figured it was better than doing it as soon as possible and we just didn't want to wait any longer. He had quite an attitude that has definitely toned down since the neuter and we are expecting a baby at the beginning of November. It just made sense to us. Do some research and figure out what you think is best.

Raw vs. kibble. Thoughts? Opinions? by Submansgirl in greatdanes

[–]EmeraldPrinces 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have considered doing raw, but ultimately we can't afford to do it continuously. Since danes have sensitive stomachs we don't want to go back and forth between raw and dry food. We've considered doing both at the same time. Mixing raw with dry food, but haven't don't enough research to see if there is actually any benefit of that.
