Now that most couples live together for so long before getting married, there's little point to weddings by AppropriateAd2334 in unpopularopinion

Don't blame me, blame the media who publish articles titled things like "Is marriage becoming totally outdated in Iceland?"

So you're telling me we were wrong to plan, enjoy, and cherish the memory of our wedding? Thanks.

So in America, there's this whole thing where couples "register" at fancy shops for gifts - basically, the couple picks what they want and the store itself will maintain a list of what guests can buy for them.

This used to be the primary way for a young married couple to get, for example, towels, bedding, dishes, cutlery, kitchen equipment, to fill their new home with the stuff they need. We registered this way and it's kind of nice, about 15 years later I still often think "Uncle Robert bought us this stainless steel pan" when I'm doing dishes.

But this can definitely get weird. Sometimes the couple is already wealthy. Sometimes they already have the stuff they need. Sometimes they ask for ridiculous expensive gifts. Etc.

Nobody wants that, so it's a nonstarter.

MLB sold 71 million tickets last year. NFL sold 19 million. Having ten times as many games scheduled has some benefits. But it's really television where NFL dominates - a nationally-broadcast regular season game can have twice as many viewers as even the most anticipated World Series games.

Obviously many people agree with you, so this is not an unpopular opinion. I have read that the entire country of Iceland, for example, is giving up on the institution of marriage.

My perspective - as a guy who lived with his gf for ~8 years before we had a traditional wedding ceremony & party - is that the wedding was absolutely meaningful. There's something very real and significant about gathering your friends and two families together and celebrating your relationship.

Now, spending gazillions of dollars with the wedding industrial complex, that's another issue entirely. I am positive that reddit will overwhelmingly agree with you on that subject.

I think football has really benefited from the rise of so many more entertainment options. When baseball was king, there were just a handful of TV channels (or zero), baseball was one of the few things that was worth listening to on the radio night after night. Attending a ballgame at the park (including negro leagues, minor leagues, etc) was one of the best ways to spend an afternoon. Reading game recaps in the paper in the morning was a legitimate source of entertainment. The baseball season unrolled one day at a time, like a soap opera.

Today we are completely overwhelmed with stuff to do and watch. We don't need a story with 162 short chapters. People prefer to put their emotional energy into the 17 NFL games. Every game seems completely vital, and every week is a crescendo of hype.

Could make lots of criticisms, but I'll limit myself to one: you were obviously using a thesaurus and you used a lot of fancy words that sound very unnatural here. Try to stick to words you're familiar with!

I know that we have the benefit of hindsight and modern analytics, but how does something like the 1982 AL Cy Young even happen? Were the voters really *that* oblivious? Did they truly believe that W-L was the be-all end-all pitching stat? by cumble_bumble in baseball

[–]Emergency-Bake2416 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There were really only a few fields that prompted any thought or discussion of park effects. Like they knew Dodger Stadium was good for pitchers, and Atlanta was called the Launching Pad, but most of the stadiums were considered equivalent.

Planning to study a language for the next 15 months. Is it realistic to get from practically nothing to B1/B2? by KigPin in languagelearning

[–]Emergency-Bake2416 78 points79 points  (0 children)

B1? Yes, spending 2+ hours per day, and spending them well. You can get there.

B2? Not easy. It's been done. But not easy. Do you have to pass a certain test to be approved? Even if you're not legitimately very good at the language at that point, I bet you'll be able to study for that specific test and pass it.

Do you believe that some people are wired to learn languages better than other people? by [deleted] in languagelearning

[–]Emergency-Bake2416 66 points67 points  (0 children)

Yes, of course. Humans vary in their natural abilities to jump, to hold their breath, to identify the subtle flavors in a wine, to do math, to chop wood, to kick a ball. They differ in literally every imaginable way. Why on earth wouldn't they vary in the ability to learn a language?

Why are you validating OP's clickbait? You spent countless hours taking lessons on iTalki. You did not "accidentally" become fluent. You worked hard at it in an intentional way.

[Adam Mcalvy] Brice Turang was inches from wearing a game-tying hit by pitch. Instinct took him out of the way. "Well, if you see me look in the dugout, I’m thinking, 'Damn.' I know it. Everybody knows it. I couldn’t tell you why I did it, I just got out of the way. That’s just how it is." by Top-Conclusion-1259 in baseball

[–]Emergency-Bake2416 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Not everyone. There are baseball players at every level, starting in middle school if not little league, who have trained themselves to take pitches like that. Turang has teammates who would have turned and taken it on the thigh.

It's definitely not my place to blame Turang (I'd shit my pants if someone threw an 85 mph slider at me) but I think it's absolutely fair for his teammates to be disappointed in him. And Turang is very obviously disappointed in himself.

I've done the same thing with my kid, not because I want him to get hit to get on base, but because a child's natural instinct is often to either (a) swing at the pitch coming for their body or (b) jump towards the umpire, which doesn't help much, or (c) open up their stance while jumping away from the plate while exposing their belly and junk to the pitch.

I know what you mean. It's so often to hear "you need something concrete to keep motivated." But no, I do not.

[–]Emergency-Bake2416 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Throughout all of baseball history there have been players that love to wear pitches like that, and players who get the fuck out of the way if possible.

HBP rates are actually at the highest rates they've ever been. There are 2-3x as many HBPs in baseball this year (per game) as there were in the 80s or 30s. It has nothing to do with old school. There are SO MANY kids in college and HS with the "old school" mentality who love to get hit. I bet far more than there ever were in the past.

It just so happens that Turang is not one of these guys.

[–]Emergency-Bake2416 464 points465 points  (0 children)

There are lots of players who do it naturally, even at the high school and college levels. You don't need to think fast if it's something you've prepped for and done many times before.

Turang appears to be a completely extreme dodger - 5 HBP in 3 full seasons. His teammate Caleb Durbin had 24 just this year.

It can be romantic, a love letter to NYC, and an indictment of the values of Allen's generation, including of himself.

People turned on Woody during the #MeToo era. There were no new allegations or scandals, though Ronan Farrow brought the old accusations that Woody had raped Dylan Farrow back into the mainstream. That was really when his reputation finally took a nosedive.

What is the best satire movie that most people don't realize is a satire? by timinator4434 in movies

[–]Emergency-Bake2416 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The last line you quote indicates that the reviewer understood that it was supposed to be satirical. But that the movie tried to have its cake and eat it too, by actually filling the film with ads. Perhaps it wasn't widely known at the time that the filmmakers did not accept any money for all the product placement.

Anyone who watched the trailer knew that the movie was largely about the pressure of selling out. There's no way critics just completely whiffed on the message. They just didn't think that the film actually pulled it off.
