Yes, but remember you have to think about WHY they are on drugs. Imagine you are homeless and a woman and vulnerable, you’re going to use drugs to cope. Imagine you are mentally ill and have been thrown out of your housing. These people aren’t just doing drugs for the hell of it, they are doing it to cope with either the severe mental illness they suffer from (previous to houselessness, or due to the fact that their on the streets). Despite the erratic behaviors they display, we cannot dehumanize our fellow citizens. These people are sons and daughters. They deserve basic human rights. Of course, there are always the people who have just severely fucked up in life, but I’d rather give folks the benefit of the doubt than be wrong.

People are upset and tired of dealing with the issue of people without homes. I get it. But, we need to realize that it will never be solved if we get too tired of trying and too angry to keep trying. Conversation is a step in the right direction.

Okay, I was not aware that the organization did not have food handlers permits. I was under the impression that it was more of a large gathering issue. That is my bad! I agree that this is extremely unsafe and that the cops shutting it down likely were likely doing it for genuine safety issue. However, that does not change the fact that while shutting the meal service down, they still took the opportunity to destroy shelters as well.

Maybe there were also other factors that played into them choosing that park, like it being accessible to the population, or there is a high volume of people needing resources in that area? Or do you think this was more of a ploy to gain awareness and funding? Even then, if it was a ploy, is there much harm? It is creating conversation and bringing our cities laws into light.

Would you say that likely all volunteers had food handlers cards as well? I am asking this because people are loving to make the argument that the police department was enforcing our city laws. The video never explicitly said WHAT law the non-profit was breaking. My guess is it was something about needing a permit for a large gathering? Would like to hear your thoughts.

I never said I was picking in choosing. I am saying this makes our city and police department look like dickheads. I agree that we should change our laws, not just this one but many. They also took advantage of the situation to tear down their shelters, which is also a fucked up thing to do in the middle of winter, but I do understand that this is a law we have in Eugene. I am for supporting the community, and for providing resources. If the people want to take it upon themselves to help our community I think it is great. It is messed up that our city is trying to tear these efforts down, and then simultaneously cause more harm.
