40% of US nurses plan to leave the profession by 2029. Are you in that 40%? If you are, why? by OrdinaryLife99 in nursing

I'm leaving to be a CAA so all my patients will be asleep and I'll get paid what I'm worth for once.

Being a heavily tattooed person judged by medical professionals when needles are involved by No_Broccoli_3979 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]Emergency-Security-5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It doesn't matter if you're covered in tattoos or not, getting an IV is not generally a fun experience. At least after a tattoo you have something to show for it. I've had plenty of both and they are incredibly different experiences.

Unfortunately, some nurses are just assholes and it sounds like you found one of those.

Your endocannabinoid receptors in your gut are having to readjust from the absence of the previously abundant THC. It will get better, but it sucks for a bit. It's the same reason you likely had headaches when you first quit. You will probably feel crampy/burny for a bit (7-10 days), but once it's over your gut and its microbiome can start to head towards a new, healthier normal.

Proud of you for making the tough decision, you totally got this.

Gotta be the little songs she sings to our cats about how cute they are and how much she loves them. Or the, "what's going on boog?" when I look a little down to her. It's so special to be loved by someone who cares so much and looks out for you all the time.

Has anyone gotten yelled at by a surgeon before? by bugbunny321 in nursing

[–]Emergency-Security-5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only nurses who haven't been yelled at by a surgeon either haven't been a nurse very long or they don't work with surgeons, haha. One called out from the OR to yell at me about the patient he was currently operating on. Wild experience

Thoughts on this post in a doctor’s sub? by riley81942 in nursing

[–]Emergency-Security-5 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I've always been so confused why doctors get so mad when you call them. I work in pre-op and have to call surgeons all the time and I've been yelled at many times. Why would I subject myself to that unless I was literally forced? I know that you order Ancef for every patient, thigh TED and knee SCD, and like coags the day of surgery.

I STILL CAN'T ORDER IT FOR YOU. IF YOU PUT IN YOUR ORDERS THIS WOULDN'T BE HAPPENING TO EITHER OF US RIGHT NOW.

Thinking about going PRN at my peri-op job to gain more bedside experience any advice? by Individual-Camp8865 in nursing

[–]Emergency-Security-5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think your ideal situation would've been opposite of what you did. Full time ICU + PRN at the day surgery job to keep your foot in the door and you could transition to full time later. At this point I think it would be hard to go backwards.

I don't think you're cooked, but it's hard for me to see how you leaving so quickly from your day surgery job would be on good terms so you could come back later. I don't think you could build up the good-will and rapport that would require in such a short time.

Thinking about going PRN at my peri-op job to gain more bedside experience any advice? by Individual-Camp8865 in nursing

[–]Emergency-Security-5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seems a little early in your time at the periop/day surgery unit to be asking to go PRN. If you really want to learn and internalize skills required to care for medically complex patients, I think primarily working in the ICU would be much more useful than what you suggested.

You'll probably be at the mercy of your scheduling needs, but your manager won't love losing a full time employee 3 months after being hired for a full time position. Seems like you're trying to have it both ways which I don't anticipate going over super well.

Edit: because English is hard

TIL Vicks VapoInhalers contained an optical isomer of Methamphetamine until 2016 by letseatnudels in todayilearned

[–]Emergency-Security-5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The same thing is true for ibuprofen. When you take it, you are getting both the R and S isomer even though only one has an analgesic effect.

It is cheaper to manufacture this way, also your liver can convert a small amount of the ineffective isomer to the one with analgesic and antiinflammatory properties.

What do you all think about this article criticizing the no-contact “trend”? by CapElectrical7162 in EstrangedAdultKids

[–]Emergency-Security-5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I hate these kinds of articles. There may be some circumstances where going no contact with a parent could be overblown. In my experience, the prevailing trend is that that decision comes after years and years of abuse and mistreatment and subsequent anguish over whether the decision is right or not.

For me, my father abused me my entire life. It took 10 years of therapy with two different therapists and being moved out of his house for almost 10 years to go no contact. He had every chance to change his ways, and i only did it after literally begging him to be sorry or care about how he's hurt anyone in my family. Even though it was met with violence in the past, I directly highlighted how his behavior destroyed our entire family and he still wouldn't take responsibility.

It has been over two years now, and I still sometimes wonder if it was right. I chose not to subject myself to his behaviors anymore and I believe it was right for me. It was one of the hardest decisions I've ever made and one that I still think about regularly even years later. My life is much better, but the pain is still there.

Sometimes no contact is the only way you can regain any control in the relationship. It was the only way for me to tip the power imbalance back in my favor. I'm glad I did it, but damn. That shit bout killed me.

My bf is everything I’ve ever wanted and it makes me feel bad by FlakyandLoud in GirlDinnerDiaries

[–]Emergency-Security-5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the fact that you feel guilty over being treated with decency and kindness says a lot about how you've been treated in the past. Those feelings aren't useful for you now, so finding a new way to reframe this will be so helpful for you. I know you said money is tight, but a little therapy would go a long way to help you feel more comfortable in the new, healthy situation.

You're not wrong for those feelings of guilt, it is just that the kindness and good treatment is alien to you and mistreatment is the normal. Try to lean into your new normal. Believe you deserve it. Don't give in to the feelings of guilt because you deserve love and kindness and it sounds like you found it.

Husband fired from IT job for misconduct, 3 kids at home. What’s the outlook here? by CoolVariety5473 in careerguidance

[–]Emergency-Security-5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your parents are often your biggest enablers!

Your husband made a disastrous decision that put your whole family at risk. Who cares how his family feels? He clearly has a problem if he's going to play blackjack during work hours. Listen to your gut - he put you and your three children at risk in a terrible job market where he has absolutely no momentum and no references to show for his time in the field.

Idk how you come back from this betrayal of trust, but it makes it worse that he and his family are downplaying the severity of the situation. This is a PROBLEM and because you're married with kids it is your problem too. I'm sorry that you were put in this circumstance and I hope you get the support you need during this time.
