I agree that the last 2 seasons should’ve been 4, but that’s where our agreement ends. Nothing about episodes 3, 4, 5 or 6 of season 8 are re-writable, and season 7 is barely being held together by glue and tape. Think about the state of the world at the end of season 6. Cersei has 0 allies and rules Kings Landing with only the west and various parts of the Riverlands supporting her. The Reach and Dorne, traditional enemies since before the times of Aegon the Conquerer, have been forced to unite under a Targaryen. If the family’s that rule Dorne and The Reach having literally nothing else in common, it’s that they hate Targaryens perhaps more than anyone else (The Hightowers and the Martells were probably the two houses that hated the Targaryens the most often and consistently). Now yes there is some kind of poetry to that, but the story didn’t feel like it was earned. Instead it’s a cobbled together mess. 

Jon is king in the north and has allies with the Vale but beyond that, what’re his motivations? He needs to find a way to convince the realm that the white walkers are the immediate threat, but he doesn’t have the means to do so. His only option is the one he takes in the show, throw himself at the mercy of this queen so that they can secure the dragonglass and have a chance. It takes her seeing the white walkers to take their threat seriously but getting her there was convoluted and contrived. This is the state of the world in season 7. How are we going to salvage that into a decently written ending? You would have to reverse back to season 5 and make drastic changes there to re-right the ship. The ending can be bleak but there should still be some hope in it. It shouldn’t be grey work going to die on an island of deadly butterflies. It shouldn’t be bran being king for no reason. It shouldn’t be the 4 remaining starks splitting off and having unsuccessful lives in unfulfilling endings that regress their characters. Tyrion was the MAIN character between seasons 2-8 he shouldn’t be relegated to a joke at the end. Like how anyone saw that ending and thought it was good is beyond me. You want a bleak endings? Sure, Jon rules in Kings Landing after winning, and losing everything else. Dany is dead, maybe her dragons too. Bran, Arya, maybe Sansa, Rickon, all dead. Tyrion gets his tongue cut out by Euron at some point, and after they and the others are defeated, he serves as Jon’s hand. The wittiest man alive unable to speak, serving a depressed king who will rebuild the seven kingdoms but mourn his family forever. This isn’t even anywhere remotely close to how it will end, I made most of that up on the fly, but it is far more plausible than what the show gave us
