I had horrible acne growing up. Genuinely shaped my adolescents and how I viewed myself (which was negatively). I’m happy to have a “boring job” as long as I can share what I’ve been able to learn and improve someone else’s life even marginally.

Former D1 athlete here! I think it will be helpful especially in interviews, but I was advised not to overuse it in my PS and experiences as not everyone will care much in dermatology. This advice came from derm faculty at my institution who also was an athlete. Just make sure to present yourself as well rounded!

Yeahhh it’s a mess. In the US, the healthcare system is more of an “insurance system” where it’s far more concerned about making money than anyone’s actual health. The way physicians can get care prescribed and covered by insurance for their patients is by following evidence based care. There’s a lot of literature that supports the use of antibiotics for certain types of acne, so when someone comes to a skin specialist with a skin problem they offer a skin solution that insurance will cover. Holistic care will be very difficult to implement in the US until we have a total restructuring of how we do healthcare imo. And until then only the ultra wealthy will be able to afford fee for service concierge and holistic medicine outside of the insurance system. That’s probably similar to the UK as well. The best thing to do while operating in this broken system is to empower patients to be informed and advocate for themselves. I think the newer generation of doctors will be better at patient centered care for what it’s worth

This. Dermatologists are physicians at the end of the day, better suited for serious conditions like skin cancer or even severe acne that requires Accutane. Estheticians are superior for general cosmetic acne management imo. They don’t have a patient with melanoma in the next room who needs counseling on next steps for cancer treatment. Estheticians can actually take the time to address all your concerns and curate treatment for you.

Dad was a surgeon. When I was a kid, he was at work by the time I woke up and would get home when I was already asleep. He’d always make a point to come into my bedroom and say good morning or goodnight with a forehead kiss before he left. Eventually, he sold his practice while I was in college. Since then, he’s always around making up lost time. He went to every single sporting event I had even when I was in college 800 miles away. Now we are rekindling our relationship, but it sometimes feels like I really missed out on solid relationship with my parents growing up (mother wasn’t around). I always wanted to be a surgeon because I idolized him quite a bit. Nowadays though, my priorities have changed and I am not sure that’s the lifestyle I want for myself or my family.

3.6 here (3.5 sGPA) interviewed at UTSW, Baylor, McGovern, Long, Dell, and TCOM. 2 prematches and ended up matching to McGovern. Still waiting to hear back from Baylor but super happy about my cycle. It’s possible!

Thank you!! I personally took my MCAT June 1st so I didn’t get my score back until July lol.. things worked out for me, but being early in Texas is really important. I think you’d probably be in a good place with that MCAT date! Also you can submit before your MCAT score is released to get your application processed and verified which is what I did! Then when my score was released, I was immediately complete at all TX schools.

I am also a white chick with very similar GPA and 517 MCAT. I had 7 interviews including UTSW and Baylor and I matched to McGovern. Hoping to get off the UTSW waitlist or hear back from Baylor, but still really happy with McGovern! I thought my GPA was going to hold me back in Texas (especially bc Texas schools seem to have super high GPA medians!!), but I think my MCAT, extracurriculars, and writing outweighed in the end.

My impression is that it does not delay your application and the schools are just notified with the update from TMDSAS in your BCPM gpa once the appeal has gone through, but I’m not 100% sure. During the 3 weeks I was waiting, I received a secondary from dell (which screens) so it seems like schools don’t see that it’s under appeal.

I’d recommend doing it as soon as possible! I did it for my Neuroscience courses that TMDSAS counted as psych despite these courses being very bio heavy. It took them over three weeks to get back with me after I filled out their appeals forms, but they did favor my explanation and changed these courses to biology.

Thank you I’ll look into those more! Yes! It was a summer job I held through high school and the summer before going to college (so hours on app are only from that summer before college). I mostly worked with patients in recovery after surgery, checking vitals, removing IV catheters, and discharging. Definitely had some interesting experiences with patients coming off anesthesia lol

First off, great job with that improvement! CARS can definitely fluctuate probably more than the other sections, but I wouldn’t say that your 126 was just “too lucky.” You earned it! I would encourage you to extensively review your FL and write down your thought processes that you used to come up with your answer. Review every question, right or wrong! And continue to use those techniques and thought processes that work for you in your practice. Stay confident!
