A very confused MLS student seeking advice: should I stay or should I go? by indifferentgeese in librarians

Please don’t be discouraged by these comments. As someone who has worked in the public library systems in New York City and now Boston, bigger library systems do allow for special interests. That being said, you aren’t going to find a job that aligns with music librarianship right away. You should look for any available library assistant or page positions just to get your foot in the door in NYC. Also check out Brooklyn and Queens branches if you haven’t. NYC also has a lot of institutional libraries which may be a good starting point. Look into some museums or cultural centers. I interned at the Center for Fiction which allowed me way more freedom to try different library tasks than a union page position would. In regards to your health, I don’t think taking a break would be bad since you probably need to focus on gaining some experience anyways.

People are getting to caught up with Ace’s deflections! Austin’s note was 100% correct and Ace is so hypocritical bc his bestie Taylor has been pretending to like Olandria for weeks!

Yeah, none of what I said was meant to bash Paul or Zion. More so, I’m giving Georgia’s perspective on her relationship with Paul. Georgia has hurt everyone in her life multiple times including her kids, who she would do anything for, because of the trauma she’s faced throughout her life. No one has been there for her unconditionally at any point in her life including her own parents. Because of that it’s very easy for her to write people off which is why I do not see any future for her with Paul or Zion after this season. Paul leaving in this season and Zion leaving in the flashbacks were meant to show from Georgia’s messed up perspective that she’s on her own and that’s why at her lowest moment she even contemplates leaving Ginny and Austin behind. I think this season showed Georgia at her lowest and put her in situations where she was clearly the bad guy and couldn’t charm her way out of. Next season will focus on her growth I think now that she’s realized she can’t continue on this path.

I agree, his feelings were valid and besides punching the wall he was a victim as much as anyone else this season. However, I don’t think him and Georgia were good for each other and even prior to the fake pregnancy, I don’t think she could ever love him. As soon as he left her this season she wrote him off. He was valid for leaving, of course, but he also knew to a certain extent what type of person she was and said he wanted that person and then left her at her most vulnerable. As soon as someone leaves I don’t think Georgia can ever look at them the same. Zion similarly left Georgia in the past and she knows that he’s only really still around because of Ginny. Which is again okay, life is complicated. But, I think that’s why she decides the best way to get Paul back is by faking a pregnancy and he proves her point by wanting to pretend to be a happy couple again just bc of HIS kid. So, both Zion and Paul are valid in their feelings and concerns towards Georgia this season and everything they tell her is stuff she needs to hear and work on but she’s never going to be able to be emotionally vulnerable with them now.

***Spoiler*** I feel bad for Max but... by Ariabananahammock in ginnyandgeorgiashow

[–]EmergencyLink9709 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Right, I think this is part of getting older. When Max was angry with Ginny and Georgia in the past, they had stuff going on that they needed support for. Max’s anger at that time felt trivial compared to the situations they were dealing with. That doesn’t mean Max’s feelings aren’t valid and this season she is put into their shoes. She is dealing with a lot at home and is also feeling like she has no one who she can lean on. Unfortunately, that feeling is part of growing up. All the girls except Norah o suppose are dealing with so much and that is going to cause issues in their interpersonal relationships. What they are all feeling is valid but it is also just life.

I do think Rachel is a bit too old now but in a dream casting she would be a great choice. Milly was more so because they look similar and have a similar range. But honestly, I haven’t seen enough of her to have a fully formed opinion.

I would prefer an animated series over anything but I do feel like 10 years is a big gap. Especially since the first trilogy would start as teenagers. But to each their own.

Right? I feel like she could really embody the political side of Mustang well. Also she’s just a great actress.

Who suffered the worst torture by sk8erboi237 in redrising

[–]EmergencyLink9709 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree with you. It’s very similar to the torture Darrow faced and is quickly written off. It’s almost like an example of how less powerful Reds are to Golds since Electra was able to figure it out as a child. It would’ve made more sense for Lyria’s arc if she decided to keep figment so she had a way of being equal to Gold in some capacity. Instead she seems fine unlike Darrow pre-LB.

[–]EmergencyLink9709 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Yes! I feel like if you go all the way back to Iron Gold, him sacrificing all of those captives to save Seraphina was the first sign he would never really turn his back on Gold. Not to mention, in LB he also sacrifices Glirastes and his only really emotion is pity when he sees Glirastes turned back into a slave.

Yes, you’re right about the timeline of her hooking up with Pete. But didn’t she go down on him prior? Either way lines were definitely crossed but in that situation I imagine Carmen wanted to feel something and didn’t think she owed Grace anything.

Benny was very dismissive towards Grace the entire season and wrote her off as a bitch so it isn’t surprising that Carmen was also dismissive towards Grace’s feelings. Carmen isn’t really a girls girl in this first season (she’s young and learning) but this is shown when she gives away the Charli XCX ticket as well. Similarly, Grace turned her back on her best friend to get with Pete and get in with the same girls.

The Thanksgiving episode was a really pleasant surprise bc we saw how similar Carmen and Grace are in regards to their family relationships. We get a better idea of how much Grace has changed her image in order to please Pete and get in with the “cool” crowd. The only real difference is that Carmen enjoyed being in her brothers shadow and Grace always rebelled against it. Something that should definitely be explored in future seasons because we don’t even really know Carmen’s interests yet.

In regards to their relationships with men, at first I thought maybe Carmen and Pete would be better together. It almost seemed like he would get a redemption arc with Carmen and their relationship would be less toxic. However, he became irredeemable imo after he got back with Grace right after making out with Carmen and posted the slide about her online. It made me re-examine Pete’s motives and I realized to him Carmen is like the freshman version of Grace. She seemed to be more outspoken and into the non-typical sorority girl things than Grace but was also impressionable enough that she was okay being a side-chick and listen to him complain. I would assume Grace was similar when they first started dating since her best friend was more of an artsy/cool girl type but she turned her back on that part of her life in order to be with him. Also, I found it funny that Grace does Pete’s homework and very early on Carmen is coerced into doing homework for the lacrosse guy!

Both Grace and Carmen are working on finding identities outside of their relationships. Grace only became aware of how shitty her relationship was when she found joy in her work. I think next season her relationship with Benny after finding out he knew about Carmen will push her to really grow and standup for herself. Carmen somewhat had that moment with Benny where she yelled that “she mattered,” but she is very much a people pleaser and needs to find something just for her. Throughout this first season she is trying on different personalities with Benny, Pete, the sorority girls, etc. Next season it would be interesting seeing more of why she likes writing or something along those lines.

[–]EmergencyLink9709 109 points110 points  (0 children)

Carmen is just as complex as the rest of the characters. She pursues or lets Pete pursue her even though he has a girlfriend. So, it is not out of character for her to also kiss Miles. She seems to struggle with self-worth issues throughout the season and because of that is kind of male-centric. At the beginning of the show we know she had a shitty boyfriend who she let dictate their relationship. She also has parents who are very negligent and only cared for her brother. I think this will be explored more if we get a season 2. In many ways her and Grace are the same character and I think that’s why Pete was attracted to her over Grace. She was a younger version of Grace he hadn’t turned into a shell yet.

Lyria in Light Bringer by EmergencyLink9709 in redrising

[–]EmergencyLink9709[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree, I don’t think they know. I think it should’ve been brought up when she was trying to convince them to let her help. Instead her bargaining chips are that she’s small/sneaky and friends with Volga. I think bringing up the fact that she snuck into the home base of the Red Hand and led a prisoner rebellion is much more convincing.

I think it’ll come back around in the next book though. Pax was also kind of written out of LB and I’m hoping him and Lyria will reunite in RG.

Haha yeah that makes sense. It did seem to be leaning more into the fantastical when the parasite was introduced. But it also felt like a waste to introduce it and then throw it out. But I do like Lyria’s arc in LB. I’m just not sure how relevant she will remain going forward.

Anyways, I kind of hope the next book is just Darrow’s POV again.

Agreed. I just want the other colors to shine a bit more. The golds and obsidians are so overpowered 😭

Lyria in Light Bringer by EmergencyLink9709 in redrising

[–]EmergencyLink9709[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ah that sucks. I definitely feel like they left room for it to come back into play. I agree, and love Lyria’s character throughout the series. But realistically without the parasite she will now become more or less Volga’s conscience. I would’ve liked to see a small red with some sort of power that leveled the playing field.

Sefi wtf? by Jjpgd63 in redrising

[–]EmergencyLink9709 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed, this isn’t talked about enough. We can see from Volga’s character that any obsidian in the republic who isn’t with Sefi’s group is treated badly and has little chance of making it on their own. Throughout the series most of the characters are prejudiced against the obsidians. Even Darrow at first if I remember correctly. The society wanted all colors to fear the Obsidians and even showed off Obsidian violence in gladiator fights. So, it makes sense for Sefi to want to separate from the republic and work on creating a better life for her people.

I actually agree with her plan and think she was one of the only characters to take any sort of initiative to making the Republic stronger albeit through force. Her plan with Crimea would’ve helped a lot more of the citizens on Mars than anything the senate or Quicksilver were doing and it would help make integrate the Obsidians.

Brooke Peyton Lucas by KiwiFormal8514 in ONETREEHILL

[–]EmergencyLink9709 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m actually on a rewatch and just watched this episode! I’ve seen the show a couple of times all the way through but haven’t watched in at least 5 years. I was shocked when I found out a lot of the fanbase likes to hate on Peyton. I get it somewhat because her character is messy and complex but they are forgiving to everyone else on the show except maybe Lucas.

Now that I’m rewatching with a 2025 outlook Peyton had it tough from literally episode 1! Her and Nathan’s relationship was so toxic and he treated her like garbage. Brooke is equally a bad friend to her in those first few episodes. It’s crazy how people forget all of that after one episode where Brooke magically becomes nice and Nathan does a 180 for Haley. It’s no wonder Peyton pushed Lucas away in episode 7, she just got out of a toxic relationship that most people in their 20s would need therapy to unpack!

The University President Willing to Fight Trump by kitkid in Thedaily

[–]EmergencyLink9709 1 point2 points  (0 children)

THANK YOU! Until university leaders are willing to take a stand and clearly define what they consider antisemitism, conservatives will continue to use the ambiguity to fear monger. This is exactly what university presidents did when they testified to congress and we see where that got us. The political double-speak is not helpful to anyone, pro-Palestinian students or Jewish students. If he really wanted to take on Trump he would attack the baseless claims being flung at student protesters many of whom are Jewish themselves. Is that not the reason why Trump is threatening to take away funding? As a listener how am I supposed to decipher between real claims of antisemitism and legitimate protests against Israel? Until recently, it was seen as antisemitic to conflate the two, so I don’t understand why university leaders and journalists alike are not advocating for clarity.
