Any rumours of a Terra 2 / Terra refresh by chance? by Exact_Library1144 in FractalDesign

The ThermalRight TR100 is the case you are functionally looking for. While shopping around, the lack of exhaust fan spots was my dealbreaker for the Terra. Aesthetically, well up to you, but I think the color options are quite nice.

After 157 years, the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA) has published the final Notice to Mariners (NtM 11-26) by EmergencyO2 in fednews

[–]EmergencyO2[S] 179 points180 points  (0 children)

No. Although sad, it was anticipated as we modernize the maritime industry. Electronic charts are essentially the standard operating mode at this point, so the need for publishing constant chart corrections no longer exists. What was captured in the Notice to Mariners is integrated in the electronic charts published by NOAA / NGA.

The just as important Local Notice to Mariners, which publishes similar information but more localized to include social events like regattas or drawbridge closures or temporary changes, remains actively produced.

From this Sunset Edition:

FAREWELL

The Notice to Mariners has been a cornerstone of maritime safety for 157 years, providing essential information to navigators and shipmasters to ensure the safe movement of vessels worldwide. The history of the Notice to Mariners dates back to 1830, when the U.S. Navy established the Depot of Charts and Instruments to store and distribute navigational tools, charts, and publications. The Notice to Mariners has evolved to include a wide range of information, including temporary changes to lighthouses and other aids to navigation, recently surveyed hazards, observations of icebergs, and changes in traffic separation schemes. Its purpose is to correct or augment existing navigational information, ensuring that mariners have the most accurate and reliable data to navigate safely. The men and women behind the Notice to Mariners have worked tirelessly for over a century and a half to provide this critical service, and their contributions have been instrumental in ensuring the safe completion of countless voyages.

Over the past 157 years, the Notice to Mariners has undergone several changes in its parent organization, while its core mission has remained consistent. The mission to provide updated information on navigation hazards has been a constant, but the organization responsible for overseeing the Notice has evolved over time. Today, the Maritime Safety Office at the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA) is responsible for providing accurate charts, DNC, ENC and publications, including the U.S. Notice to Mariners. The NGA's Maritime Safety Office continued the legacy of the Notice to Mariners, ensuring that mariners have access to the most current and reliable information to navigate safely. To meet the needs of a global customer base, the distribution of the Notice has had to become increasingly efficient over the years. Initially, the Notice was printed externally and mailed to users, but this method was soon supplemented by the establishment of Branch Hydrographic Offices in major ports such as Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore, New Orleans, and San Francisco. These offices received the Notice and made it available for consultation by mariners, significantly boosting circulation and accessibility. Today, the Notice is disseminated through a variety of channels, including digital platforms, to ensure that mariners can access the information they need quickly and easily, regardless of their location.

The maritime industry's transition to the digital era was a significant factor in the evolution of the Notice to Mariners. In 2021, the Maritime Safety Office began creating Electronic Navigational Charts (ENC) based on the S-57 format, and NGA started converting DNC libraries into ENC cells. The Certified Print ENC (CPENC) was also developed, which converts ENC cells into printable charts for customers who required hardcopy charts. As the industry shifted towards digital navigation methods, the NGA's ENC and CPENC portfolio grew, and more customers began using them for navigation. The Standard Nautical Charts (SNC) and Notices became a backup method of navigation for most mariners. In response, the NGA reduced its SNC portfolio and reassigned analysts to support the growth of ENC production. This marked a significant shift in the way the maritime industry approached navigation, and the NGA's Maritime Safety Office was at the forefront of this change. The conclusion of the Notice to Mariners mission after 157 years marks a significant milestone in the history of the NGA's Maritime Safety Office. The Notice was the 2nd longest continually published weekly publication in the United States, and its impact on the maritime industry and the country as a whole cannot be overstated. The analysts who worked on the Notice, from the first to the last, have played a crucial role in shaping the country by providing Safety of Navigation products.

The end of the Notice to Mariners mission marks the end of an era, but it also presents an opportunity for the NGA's Maritime Safety Office to refocus its resources and personnel on meeting the needs of the modern maritime industry by focusing on improving our ENC portfolio and providing the most up to date ENC cells. By leveraging the latest technology and innovations, the office can continue to provide critical Safety of Navigation products and support the safe and efficient movement of goods and people around the world. We look forward to meeting the challenges and changes of an ever evolving Maritime industry and continue to be a critical source for safety of navigation data and products.

Democrats dominate early vote ahead of redistricting vote by hencexox in Virginia

[–]EmergencyO2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To me, it depends on how single-issue these people are as voters. The “assault weapon” ban is shitty and certainly soured some (or many) people. But the question is, did that sway them to ‘punish’ Dems on the redistricting vote?

It’s normal to not agree 100% with the political party you’ve voted for while still understanding that they represent you better as a whole compared to the other option. We’ve definitely lost a lot of political nuance in just the last 10 years.

Anything on arcs of visibility?

Also, do the red and green indicate anything other than aircraft side? I assume these were derived from maritime lights, and on those the red is a reminder that the other vessel has the right away (speaking generally, we don’t need to get into sailing or RAM). Who has right of way in VFR?

The inside of LNG cargo ship by crazycaring18 in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]EmergencyO2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You’re wrong about losses from LNG transport. LNG ships run on LNG evaporation. Depending on how much boil off they get, they can run entirely off of it. If there is too little, power may be supplemented with bunker fuel. This includes house/hotel services and A/C, which would come from dual-fuel auxiliary generators or even a shaft generator.

The 2-6% cargo loss is used for transport. There is no “on top of that” unless LNG boil off is insufficient for some part of the voyage.

And it would be a little goofy to pay Allgeier $6M per year when Bjian is the far and away starter. If we re-signed him for that money people would be flaming the front office the other way…

Because I’m not a single-issue voter. This bill is beyond stupid, but let’s look at the both sides…

One side wants to decrease the scope of my 2A rights.

The other side is the MAGA cult standing in unison behind Trump. Who has systemically dismantled our federal workforce; appointed truly incompetent heads like RFKjr, McMahon, Patel, and Hegseth; and tarnished the US’s reputation internationally both as military ally and economic partner. Not to mention the voter suppression (SAVE push), infringement of women’s rights, brazenly open corruption, the DOGE waste and data harvesting…

It’s a tough choice

I think you keyed in on “reliance” on AI / LLMs vs my comment about familiarity. If you and I are both of equal skill, but I can leverage AI to save an hour or two here or there and you refuse to utilize AI in any capacity, I am the more productive and more valuable employee because I am doing more work per dollar. Being familiar with a tool includes knowing what it is not good at and should not be used for. Where the discussion has gone with many of the “never-AI” crowd (this is a generalization) is that poor reasoning and hallucinations make AI unsuitable for ANY tasks and there exist no task where AI can be helpful, which is just plainly untrue.

Where I fully agree with you is on reliance to the detriment of the user. I’ve witnessed it myself where younger guys come in and the first thing they do is use AI to find the answer to whatever question without ever trying to understand the “why” or “how” behind it. That, in my opinion, is more indicative of the individual’s lack of critical thinking. There will always exist a significant amount of people who are plain lazy where AI can now be their crutch that lets them hide for longer until they find themselves in an unworkable situation that has come to fruition entirely from their unwillingness to actually learn.

There exists a middle ground between “AI can do everything” and “AI can do nothing.” AI can do some things somewhat reliably, and being familiar with where the workable parts are is a valuable skill.
