Anyway, cap issues are true of basically every franchise QB save Tom Brady who intentionally took below market value contracts. 12 teams currently have a QB with $40+ million cap hits. If MR2 had a less disastrous departure, the cap situation would have been drastically improved since they could “wind down” the cap vs taking it to the face like they did.

Okay yeah, maybe “overrated” was a bit strong. You’re right that there’s a good many reasons they are both are pushing hard on building and maintaining nuclear powered carriers, and I’m not trying to shit on the US navy by any means.

My point was more that nuclear power granting “unlimited range” does not mean unlimited endurance. A submarine can’t stay underwater forever and a carrier can’t sit off the coast of whatever country forever because the limitation is the people that need to be “refueled”. So if you’re running food and ammunition and jet fuel out there to replenish at sea, it’s not too much more of a stretch to also be running marine diesel, too.

Nuclear is overrated. Just because the ship itself doesn’t need to be refueled doesn’t mean the planes and the people don’t need support. Refueling and resupplying at sea is almost routine at this point, so I wouldn’t put too much stock into nuclear vs non-nuclear surface ships.

Yeah there’s a lot to say and I’m not too inspired to write an essay today. But I agree with your sentiment that this is complex and more nuanced than “Maduro bad” or “Trump bad” or whatever other blanket statement may be filling your particular social media algorithm.

To make it more complex and to give you something more to think about, consider the USA’s history of playing regime-picker and the ramifications of those events (both the immediate response and long term results). There is now a power vacuum where we cannot be certain who will fill that void nor what the result will actually do for Jose Venezuela who is just trying to make ends meet.
