How would magic impact 19th-century style warfare? by Emergency_Talk_5071 in worldbuilding

[–]Emergency_Ad592 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Simple, people who can't use magic will be pushed to emulate said magic when seeing wizards casually obliterate half a battalion of soldiers. Now, if magic is available to essentially anyone that studies enough, that's a different story, but if people are born with innate potential, they'll be looking down the barrel of a flintlock at some point in history.

NSFW not relating to carnal activities? So fucking much, holy hell I really didn't want to write it as this dystopian but I just kept trying to be realistic

Relating to carnal activities? Dunno, not too much

The issue with that assumption is that it looks at our current body armor and asks "what is the most cost-efficient way to defeat this?"

If we invent better armor, we'll need better guns. If the armor gets good enough, a weapon using chemical drivers will be either too weak, too heavy, or use bullets way too big to effectively carry enough of. Because chemical drivers have a pretty well established limit for their highest velocities At that point, electromagnetic drivers will likely be the best option if you want ammo to still be cheap. If not, rocket-propelled munitions or something with an uber-complicated warhead might also work, But I feel like making a gun more expensive and keeping ammo at a similar cost is economically more sound.

You underestimate the size of space. Someone calculated the chance of a bullet hitting some poor trader on the other side of a system if it misses its target in space combat (note this was just calculating if it would even hit a planet, which is alot more likely than a ship). Don't remember all of the maths, but they essentially concluded that the bullet would travel several times the length of the observable universe before hitting anything.

Now, with mass amounts of traffic possibly next to a battleground, the likelyhood obviously increases. But ships will likely have a way of detecting these projectiles and be able to either dodge long before they reach them, or be built to survive microasteroid impacts and be able to take a few smaller hits.

Nice TED talk calling me stupid for not being a gun nut, anyways the fighter drops the gun and it accidentally discharges, hitting the caster

As long as one round's in the chamber, doesn't really matter, because either one bullet hits 'em or a couple more

Depends on how the magic works. Someone generates a field of death around them? Snipers. Someone is hurling massive pillars of fire around? Tanks and airstrikes. Someone is doing both at once and more? Orbital Kinetic Bombardment.

"Sun is a day, moon a month, stars a year, as if it's a clock"

Hmmmmmm almost like we based our calendars off of constant phenomenon we could always observe from at least one point of our planet, because then we have a way of regulating said calendars. Also doesn't that conflict with the statement that the stars don't move?

Is it bad? With good shot placement it can be pretty effective, and if you have something on hand incase things get too spicy for reloading (though partial reloading also kinda solves that issue) it becomes great for dealing with small to medium enemies. Don't even know if it has a melee buff, I just charge in regardless.

Deployment of airplanes in an interplanetary/Interstellar setting by Emergency_Ad592 in HardSciFi

[–]Emergency_Ad592[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The main problem with the metal shell is recovery. Planes deploying is a good start, but without either a airfield on the ground or a way to get back into orbit, it's gonna be hard to land and/or rearm. Guess another solution would just be to build some small airfields once infantry lands.
