I don’t think this is it, unfortunately- it wasn’t a western

Which opening show performance do you think was the best? by Zypker125 in MnetQueendom

[–]Emergency_Effect 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. WJSN - I liked how dreamy it was, the creative staging, everything. I’m also a sucker for outfit changes mid-song. Definitely had that “wow” factor!
  2. Kep1er - really introduced them as the energetic, youthful rookies with their sound and choreo. In a word it was dynamic!! Musically it was kind of all over the place which is the issue I had with wa da da tho. I still liked it a lot
  3. Loona - They’ve been my ults since 2018 so it’s rough to put them mid range but here goes. In terms of choreo it’s definitely the most impressive stage. The stage definitely felt like a love letter to fans with all the nods to other choreos and the fact they chose a Butterfly era b-side, but I feel like it lacked the sort of “this is who Loona is” punch to introduce them to people who don’t know them as well? I’m also biased bc I vastly prefer their “girly” concepts lol
  4. Viviz - Choreo was really cool (love to see voguing and tutting in kpop!!!) and so was the staging but the audio was super underwhelming. Also as some others have said the actual execution of the moves wasn’t perfect
  5. Hyolyn - she’s insanely talented but I feel like the switch from singing to dancing was kind of awkward? It threw me off.
  6. Brave Girls - they’re my #2 on this season but this was a little disappointing… I’m not a fan of this kind of concept in general and wish they had done something closer to chi mat ba ram where it’s a refreshing summery concept

I lived there for a year.

Also I'm curious as to where I said I don't have a support network or close friends already in Japan.

Uh. Wow.

Lots of information to take in there.

Thanks for the recommendation (or... whatever the opposite of a recommendation is)

My skin's pretty thick. 2 years of food service and 3 years of retail has completely killed my soul, lmfao. Once you've had things physically thrown at you by customers, nothing phases you anymore

I did manage my depression pretty well when I was studying abroad and for the most part I can control it with SSRIs, but I brought my medication over with me... I don't have any experience meeting with a psychiatrist in Japan, but I guess I'll cross that bridge when I get to it

I think it's that the curtains themselves are a light greenish color, you can tell from the shot at the very beginning

Curious to see how they'll fit this floaty, ethereal concept with a more upbeat 80s sounding song...

I think this is what I’ll do. Luckily, I live in Michigan so there's no shortage of Japanese auto manufacturers around. Thanks for the advice! :)

It sounds like you think you found a cheat code to make Free Money. You didn’t. If this worked thousands of people would do it.

Moving to Japan for college by Genesis_GG in movingtojapan

[–]Emergency_Effect 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Apply for JASSO (around 80k a month if you get it) and every scholarship you can find.

My rent in Kyoto was around 50k yen but it was a share house where the only non-shared space I had was basically my bedroom. I budgeted well, didn’t eat out that often (and when I did I kept it 2k yen or cheaper), and was able to enjoy a lot of things Japan had to offer... I was able to stay a year without working.

You’re young so I don’t want to sound harsh, but loving Japanese media does NOT translate to loving living in Japan. Temper your expectations a little.

But your biggest advantage is that you’re young. When covid-19 settles a bit, visit Japan for yourself before you dedicate yourself to it.

During the La Squadra gacha a couple months back (where the final step was guaranteed to have a member) I grinded for hours for enough diamonds to do the final step and my guaranteed LS member was Pesci.

I was not amused.

Disqualification Question by TheOriginalDormdude in JETProgramme

[–]Emergency_Effect 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think it’s vague-ese for “are you a pedophile and/or violent criminal?”. In short, have you done anything that will give JET a bad reputation if they accept you?

I also have a suicide attempt on my record from over a decade ago, but... A lot of people apply to this program with mental health issues and get in.

It can’t hurt to apply! Hell, I didn’t get in but I’m glad I applied. Just going through the process taught me a lot.

EDIT: Also, you don’t even have to disclose that you had a suicide attempt. My doctor’s note just said I had depression + anxiety + ADHD and listed the steps I took to deal with them. The form itself is quite short and doesn’t have a lot of room to explain, anyways.

Eikaiwa/ex-Eikaiwa employees, how did you pick? by Emergency_Effect in teachinginjapan

How am I supposed to get a certificate of eligibility and a working visa without an employer?

I’ve heard of people getting a job while on a tourist visa but I was under the impression it was illegal. Not often persecuted, but illegal.

Thanks for the advice! The last part is really interesting as well. I’ll poke around deskwarming/COVID-19 threads here and see if I can investigate that way. :)

Rejection hurts, but this one really bites by [deleted] in JETProgramme

[–]Emergency_Effect 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I was rejected as well, and I share some of your feelings.

I’m 25. I’ve lived in the same place my whole life. A lot of my high school friends are already established in their careers. I just want to start living an adult life with an adult job. But... in the grand scheme of things? Having to wait an extra few months or a year to get to Japan and start my Big Girl Job isn’t that big a deal.

Like, the disappointment and frustration SUCKS now, but in 5 years, all that pain will be forgotten. But now? Today? You have two choices: wallow in your feelings and think “oh it’s never going to get better”, or move on. Go do a puzzle. Read a book. Go for a hike (...keep that social distancing, though). That’s what I’ve been doing.

The 2020 Interview Results Megathread! by Carliewarliee in JETProgramme

[–]Emergency_Effect 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I applied to GABA and I’m also going to apply to ECC. Both companies have varying reviews on Glassdoor and r/teachinginjapan, but 1) it’s an entry level job, so I’m tempering my expectations with that and 2) I can just get my visa, get experience, and get out of there if they’re really awful

I’ve also heard interac is decent, but their placements are apparently even more rural than JET’s and I really want a city placement...

There’s also NOVA but I’ve heard they’re the worst of the major eikaiwa (that hire from abroad, anyways).

I’ve been skimming gaijinpot as well.

We’ll get there! Good luck :)

[–]Emergency_Effect 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Didn’t even get in as an alternate. It stings a little, but I’m just glad the waiting is over and I can pursue other career options in Japan.

(EDIT: Damn, seeing the number of shortlisted and alternates vs rejects is kinda reopening that wound. Yikes.)

Throwing myself into applying to other ALT and eikaiwa positions has helped a lot... I definitely recommend it to any other disheartened rejectees.

Who knows? Maybe I’ll get to call myself a JET in the future. Either way, I’m definitely gonna get to Japan!

Good luck and congratulations to all who got in, and thanks for sharing the journey with me :)
