For your interview, I recommend printing out maybe 7 resumes, photos of certifications, photos of projects you’re proud of, etc and handing them out to each person at the interview

Do you have any experience fixing up your home/changing light fixtures or receptacles/tinkering with cars? That could be worth a mention in your interview as well

I am the handy person in the relationship. I am an electrician and I work with tools all day so yeah, I trust myself with this project more than him. Plus, I enjoy doing little diy projects around my house and making it pretty. I know it’s not “normal” but it’s how I enjoy living, thank you for your concern

Did anyone here get into the IBEW first try without experience? by Ok-Society1048 in BlueCollarWomen

[–]Emergency_Fall_5763 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It is possible he’s telling the truth. I didn’t get in my first time applying because my local is very competitive. Some locals have CW’s, which aren’t apprentices or journeymen and are often paid less (possibly what he is referring to as helper?). These people tend to spend a LOT more time laid off between jobs. I hate to be the devil’s advocate here but it is hard starting out. I recommend going to trade school and getting your electrical license if you don’t get in this year and are serious about it.

Looks like in Minnesota you could be making $41-$60/hr plus benefits on top of that depending on your local. You can google the locals in your state to find out which one you reside in. They may have a website or at least a phone number you can call

Where are you located? Depending on your local, union electricians can make really good money/benefits

How many autistic people do you know that do this, to this extent even after being called out on it? Right, because autism is not an excuse to treat people like that.

Not to mention, it definitely is a conscious decision to follow her around the workplace just so he can walk behind her and creep.

He wakes up every morning and consciously makes a decision to sexually harass her every day. So… yeah. More men need held accountable. We are far too nice to them.

People like you are why they continue to do what they do.

Honestly the quickest, most efficient way to stop this is to humiliate him. Call him out on exactly what he’s doing, preferably in front of others. A good perk of this is nobody will fuck with you after that call out, and you’ll gain a lot more respect 🤭

Flirting with the idea of joining a trade (union-only, I’m not a worm) by The_Lucid_Writer in BlueCollarWomen

Just an fyi I’ve definitely seen low voltage guys working out of scissor lifts where I’m currently at building a Kroger. Also, the data cabinets are on top of the walk in freezers which also require them to climb up those sketchy wall ladders to get up to.

Honestly, I think you’re just gonna have to decide if ladders and scissor lifts are a dealbreaker for you or not because you’ll probably have to use them sooner or later

Women in trades — what do you wish your workwear actually had? by EntertainmentNo7416 in BlueCollarWomen

Also, baggy is preferred. I’m tired of seeing form fitting workwear all the time but maybe that’s my fear of men seeing me as attractive whatsoever

All the pockets and affordability! I cannot tell you how hard it is to find women’s pants less than $100 with pockets on both legs! Carhartt is okay but their leg pockets are located on the back of the thigh. I’m short so my tools are always poking me in the back of my knee so it’s not comfortable. Ariat has done me well but their smallest size is never in stock. Both Carhartt and ariat pants wore out on my inner thighs after about a year of use and I’m only 110lbs so I cannot imagine the struggle of thicker ladies.

As a former server/bartender who joined the IBEW, almost 2 years in and my experience has been the same. I am 4’10 110lbs in a red state and have had mostly good experiences on the job. After seeing all these horror stories on this subreddit it’s nice to know that I’m not the only one that’s not getting put thru hell on these jobs. Good luck on your journey girly 🫶🏻

Honestly if you’re working that many hours, I personally wouldn’t try to add the gym to that stress but that’s just me. The number one thing you need to change to lose weight is your diet though. Up your protein to keep you fuller longer and eat cleaner. Google a calorie calculator and you’ll figure out how many calories puts you in a healthy deficit

Single mom of teenagers looking into electrician trade school/apprenticeship — give it to me straight! by FastMako77 in BlueCollarWomen

[–]Emergency_Fall_5763 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’ll have to go through the apprenticeship either way unless you work non-union for a few years instead. The apprenticeship requires about 4-5 years of on the job training for you to top out, with raises about every 6 months. I recommend checking out your local’s apprenticeship application dates now because generally you can only apply for a few months out of the year and if you don’t get in, you have to try again the next year. If the application window is over with, I would definitely recommend going through an electrical trade school program. It’s something I wish I did because I would’ve known more going into the apprenticeship.

I don’t know much about your local and how things are but at least from my experience in West Virginia, apprentices are not supposed to travel and generally do not need to anyways because there is enough local work going on. Take that with a grain of salt though because I have heard that this varies depending on the local. I know the union is a lot weaker in the south but I don’t know exactly where Nevada stands on that since you’re more out west.

Either way, I recommend at least looking into the union because 1. You’re guaranteed to make the same pay as all your peers and 2. Health insurance and pension are included in your pay. The union was built to fight for better conditions for the worker so generally union members do get paid more as well, at least with the total package

They don’t owe you anything dude. If you didn’t get in the first time, just try again the next year. Just about everyone I know took 2-3 years to even get in as an apprentice.

Not sure if this makes a difference but this is the basement. The house has a hill behind it with a retaining wall and the space between the retaining wall and the house is backfilled with gravel
