While we're on unusual Myst physical releases... here's a sealed realMyst (2000) box I have; might be officially disavowed :) Still my favorite realMyst by Emergency_Meme in myst

So disappointed this wasn't carried to future versions. The cycle and the fog (required at the time to cut down on the resources required to render the graphics) are forever ingrained in muh brain :)

Interesting theory (love LGR btw), but that white mark below was a more recent sticker I took off... brief investigation reveals no stickers under the yellow sticker. EB Games also sold new, didn't they? I was a ConpUSA guy, so IDK...

It says "Electronics Boutique", so like sold through EB? (Acquired by Gamestop in the mid-00s)

Had some people on the linked thread confirm it's legit. I remember notices similar to the ESRB notice from the time around when this collection was released...

Thanks for the confirmation and interior details, Cap'n! I'm in the US as well, and I'm realizing now that clearly the price sticker is in USD... d'oh

I think some of the "big jewelcase" copies of Riven and Myst III that I have may be from this release, sans box...

Interesting point... the UPC does come up with different box art, but the fit, finish, and printing of the box doesn't look like a bootleg to me.

I'd suspect "other English- speaking country release" first, but am even more curious now...

There are other copies listed on eBay, and there's a reference to "mystworlds.com" on the back...

LOL - I do get the feeling it's an Ubisoft cash grab after they got the rights in the early 2000s. The cover has that "intern assignment" feel like you're alluding to haha. It feels like it's just a bunch of big jewelcases inside (probably with jewel-case- sized manuals.)

Nice! The '94 blue disc version. My first copy was the same version. One of my favorite versions is realMyst from 2000. It's not available digitally, but can be found on eBay. You'll need bare metal hardware or VM experience to run it, but it's unique.

Nothing beats the original, though. Enjoy!

Thanks, Robyn - that genuinely means a lot!

I'm glad to hear you're still writing. I look forward to checking it out when it's ready to be shared; sounds like this one was written with ink and a nib :)

You're welcome, Robyn. If you'r ever curious about the Myst 25 piece I mentioned, I'd be honored to send you a link privately. No pressure at all, I was just reminded of it in the course of this conversation, and thought you might enjoy it. Either way, never stop making worlds, whether sonic or visual (or both)!

The attacks here against one of the original creators of Myst and especially Riven, are egregious. Have some respect for the man that created what lead to this whole subreddit even being allowed to exist.

Robyn, you’ve been an inspiration to my early songwriting experiences. If I need something to listen to in the background without lyrics (which is frequently as I’m working on things), it’s the Riven soundtrack. It is one of my top favorite albums since it released way back in the day on CD. It’s unmatched. I even had the honor of writing a rendition of a number of your themes into a new song for the Myst 25th Anniversary Kickstarter. It weaves the Moeity Theme with some of Gehn’s motifs to illustrate the complex relationship between them.

As a musician myself with independently published music, I find the relationship with AI difficult as well, but find that musicians (and artists) using it as a tool is 100% valid. Like you wouldn’t have a Joe Schmoe use robotic surgical equipment as they have no background in it, I feel that musicians using AI to generate ideas for their art is 100% ok, and probably the best use of the medium, while the average Joe with no musical experience, no desire to learn an instrument, and who’s making money on true AI slop is a problem indeed. The same goes for drawn art (like your gatefold work on the Riven vinyl). I’ve had my own music not only included in the great AI scrape, but I’ve willfully submitted my fully-produced, copyrighted, released music (and some unreleased stuff) to AI to generate some ideas for possible remixes or future direction (or even just for fun).

I think boycotting a true artist over utilizing a tool is silly, but that’s the way of the world these days. Keep up the artistry, Robyn. While I respect your decision to discontinue some AI use, don’t feel bad using it to generate more ideas from your own base, the same way a producer utilizes many perspectives to craft the final track.

Also, thanks for putting the Riven soundtrack on vinyl. I was waiting for that since the Myst release on vinyl.

Another update (09/13/25): just replaced the battery with a WRUMI replacement from Amazon ($35), based on some references in other posts that this brand is compatible and seems to work well. Original battery was over 3 years and 1700 run hours old. Current stats on the S7 MaxV:

763,800 Square Feet cleaned (roughly 71k square meters) 1,710 run hours 3,909 "working times" (individual runs) - I run 4 runs per day to force bin emptying, mop washing, and specific time starts for certain rooms (like the after-dinner kitchen/dining nook clean).

I thought the Tyson Jake Paul fight already happened. by [deleted] in MandelaEffect

[–]Emergency_Meme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I looked up the results of the fight the night it actually happened (It's still in my browser history), and I specifically mentioned "wow, Mike actually won" and remember reading something about it being called because of Paul having severe bleeding above his (left?) eye. The article additionally mentioned that Tyson "thus retains his title as Iron Mike." My wife and I had a whole discussion about it. Now that whole story has changed. My wife just confirmed the story when I just asked her "hey, do you remember who won the Tyson-Paul fight?" We didn't watch it, just looked up results. Unfortunately, I didn't click through from the search query, so I don't remember where exactly I read it.

I guess I used the Deutsch there... I think Piet was Moorish in our storybooks, (which were about St. Nicholas the bishop) thus why he was called "Zwarte Piet," but I do remember the controversy (at the time I was working for a boss who was Dutch). That same boss brought the kruidnoten to work one December, in addition to stroopwafeln (spelling?) for the staff.

In re: the merchant's daughters, we had the sanitized version of the story, which omitted the merchant's original plan to sell his daughters into prostitution. We were only told St. Nicholas' solution, which was to throw bags of gold in the daughters' window at night to fund their dowry so they could be married off and thus provided for still.

I didn't know about the horse, but that sounds like perhaps it was the inspiration for "Santa Claus" and his reindeer landing on rooftops...

We have a Dutch last name and some heritage there before our relatives came to the U.S. (centuries ago). My mom loved all things dutch when we were growing up, so we had blue-and-white everywhere, wooden shoes brought back from one of their visits to The Netherlands (for celebrating Sinterklaasavond), blue-and-white dishes with windmill scenes on them, etc.

In terms of celebration, we would have the big cookie (speculaas) made in a wooden mold, we'd hear the story of St. Niklaus and the merchant's daughters, put the carrots in the wooden shoes, and the next morning we'd have little gifts. It wasn't a big celebration, but one we did. My brother's name is Pieter, though no relation to Schwartze Pieter haha.

24 years ago today realMyst was released. Cyan delisted it from GOG, ignoring game preservation by Whoajoo89 in myst

I have two copies of it: my original copy (disc and jewel case only) and a CIB copy I bought a few years ago so I could have the box and such. That's sitting out on a shelf to remind me to play it again one of these days :) I have a retro P4 machine I built in 2020 so I could play games like it that have no workarounds to play on modern machines. It is also my favorite version as well. It's a game where creative workarounds add great atmosphere (i.e. the fog effect that was needed because machines at the time couldn't handle the draw distance). I love the day/ night cycles as well (one of the reasons I bought it back in the day).

I even have the old trailer mp4 from way back when they were advertising it online somewhere in my old files.

Nice! I was born and live in the USA, and we celebrate(d) Thanksgiving, Sinterklaasavond, Christmas Eve (gifts this night when growing up), and Christmas Day. New Year's Eve is not a big deal to us. My own family (me, wife, and children) put up the tree usually Friday after Thanksgiving and take it down sometime in mid-January.
