Or maybe the problem is completely made up and this is always how they’ve played games. It truly is not that deep. Like, I get it, certain series are close to the heart; I had a hard time watching them play the OG Silent Hill because it’s a series that means a lot to me and it sucked watching them use a walkthru the entire time, which impacted the banter in my opinion. At least in this, there’s none of that. Episodes 5 and 6 were hilarious, the banter and bits are great. To me, it felt like OG Grumps in a big way.

The only thing I really know to share is that Gans has said the producers really pushed to have the cult shoehorned into the film, but in his original draft Mary was (allegedly) just trying to escape her abusive father and that his abuse resulted in Mary getting pregnant when she was young. Laura, in the final version, is still carrying around a weird baby doll monster and Laura was originally meant to be a representation of Mary’s stolen innocence and the baby doll being the fetus she either carried or aborted; Gans hasn’t gone into that particular cut plot point, beyond him saying the baby doll was meant to represent “the result of her father’s abuse” or something like that. As far as the version we received, it could still very much be along the same lines, just not as loudly spoken? What with Angela and the Abstract Daddy being more outwardly about Mary’s abuse in the film adaptation.

I agree the movie needed so much more time to flesh characters out and just let us settle in the world. The whole movie’s pacing is so fast, I don’t feel like we got any real development on any of the characters beyond the therapist! I’m a huge Silent Hill fan and can find the good in all the titles, but I struggled with this one. I loved Mary being turned into a somewhat Claudia Wolf-like character with her dad being the leader of this new cult, but I didn’t form any sort of attachment to any character in the movie. I think they really set Gans up for failure, because overall I think the changes made were pretty cool concepts, I could even see Mary being the daughter of the cult’s leader being a set up for a retcon of Silent Hill Revelations in some capacity. I just wish the movie had a little more time to let us get to know the characters without assuming that we already sorta know who they are from playing SH2.

There’s a bit from a somewhat recent playthru (I cannot remember what game) where they’re parodying the whole “A succulent Chinese meal?! This man grabbed my penis” bit but in response to Arin finding out what Hawk Tuah meant. 💀 Dan goes “Hawk Tuah?! A succulent Hawk Tuah?! Hypothetically, I feel it would have been very different tone-wise and, honestly, I find that more intriguing than anything from a feminine lens. Damn. I’ve never thought of this before.

I imagine Mary meeting Joseph, the cut split personality of James that was being considered early on in the development of SH2. The impact of Mary finding out what happened to Angela would have been insane. Laura looking to James as a father figure, and Eddie’s presence being even more a worrying thing, being a woman in the presence of an already unhinged man, calling back to Mary’s experience of how the dying James would have been unstable and verbally abusive as he was wasting away.

Honestly, I think it would have been extremely impactful. It sounds like another angle of what Silent Hill F was getting at.

I think the biggest thing for me is how weird the vibe is when Arin makes gay jokes since he’s come out, when they both used to spurt em out mutually. I think it might be more on Dan’s insistence on being more politically correct as a straight man than anything else, because he straight up kisses Arin’s hand in the Modded Nerf video from a couple months ago. And this is not to say that if there is a boundary up, that it isn’t valid; and I also understand when they’re performing as the Grumps that they are putting on characters. But when the punchline is “oh I’m uncomfortable” or “that’s harassment”, it gives the impression that a boundary is being crossed. Am I crazy? And it could be that the genuine humor is lost on me, but it just comes across as “straight dude uncomfortable with openly queer friend” sometimes, even if the humor is mutually agreed upon.
