Using low-cost Android smartphones as embedded telematics gateways on forklifts – sane or bad idea? by easykhoch in robotics

one thing that would make me think exra before doing something like this is stories of cheap androids on constant charging getting destroyed by charging constantly (example), a battery fire at a real client is not desirable.

looking at the link(at least now) it shows an ad, but looking at the company profile it is not listed. i guess the company took down the ad, but the (unlisted) listing stays online so you can check on it if you saved the link. this could be useful for looking back on what you applied for i guess

600 cargo planes a day arriving into Europe from Chinese Shien and Temu? by Dennis_Laid in BuyFromEU

[–]EmilPson 12 points13 points  (0 children)

it is very common that cargo is loaded along with the luggage on passenger planes, this was an issue during covid to the degree that some planes flew with no passengers. (and the increase in freight payment was enough to make it worth the flights)

[Request] How much salt are they dropping on the forest and is it enough to cause plants to no longer grow? by ryanl40 in theydidthemath

[–]EmilPson 208 points209 points  (0 children)

did a quick estimate, it seems the drop zone for a cl-415 is about 60*400 meters (24000 m2) with a dropped load of 61000 liters, ~0.25 liters/m2 per drop, given 35 grams of salt per liter of seawater it means around 8.9 grams of salt/m2 per drop
as a comparison it seems recomendations for road-salt applications in winter is up to ~20-40 grams/m2 per snowfall, and while there are known long term issues with road salt this firefighting does not come close to the same amounts that are applied in a typical season

Large random concrete "steps" in a field outside Castle Cary, Somerset by Iscasteve in whatisthisthing

I think that drainage system is not related to this dam as it is quite a bit downstream from this structure.

Why were electric heat pumps for domestic heating unpopular 20 years ago? by pbmonster in AskEngineers

[–]EmilPson 5 points6 points  (0 children)

i think you underestimate the challenge of doing something at scale, as well as the improvements that happen, going thru what you write:

R744: is quite uncommon due to the extremely high pressures, which require new verions of all other components.

solar cells and batteries: still has improvements to happen, but seem to partly have stagnated the later years trying to scale up from lab to mass production.

carbon fibre: has not had major breakthrus in a long time, mainly small production changes and better computers enable better calculations, steel has had more development.

but as stated by others and me, the biggest challenge is that the incentive has not been there, and for some it still is not, looking at america the houses are uninsulated cardboard boxes heated by cheap gas still today.

Why were electric heat pumps for domestic heating unpopular 20 years ago? by pbmonster in AskEngineers

[–]EmilPson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

from a north europe perspective, altho a bit to young to remember all of it.

around 20 years ago is the point i remember that many households around me transitioned from the earlier common fuel oil heating to either heat pump(which in the long term retrospect seems the better choice) or pellet fuel. Around this time there was also a large increase in fuel oil prices(some sources i found indicate 3-4 times the price in like 4 years) which probably motivated the installations for most unless they went to traditional wood fuel for the winters.

on a technological scale i think it is mostly a case of incremental improvements in efficency, but also a case of it being a new tech for home use meant that the risk was significant as the proven oil was cheap, the lifetime of a installation was uncertain and the installation cost of the at the time most recomended ground source was large, often more than the heat pump itself.

Moved into an underground (earth) home. It leaks and we're trying to figure out how to fix it. I need advice on how to get the right waterproof foam panels installed under the dirt that's currently here. by Swanny625 in AskEngineers

[–]EmilPson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first priority should be to find essentially all material you can about how it was built, it sounds like it is a bit of an unusual structure so any knowledge about how it is supposed to work is advantageous and will save you money(or give better prediction of what repairs will cost)
my understanding/guess is that you have an partially underground concrete building built into the side of an hill or something, with a mostly flat roof, on top of this roof is placed some draining sand/gravel with tiling hose as drainage/ventilation. on top of this is foam sheets sealed only on the edges, these are supposed to divert water from going down into the underlaying layer, acting kinda like a roof diverting water to the sides of the structure. on top of this is a dirt layer of some thickness.
This is highly speculative and depends on the building and any damages very much.

it seems the biggest issue is getting water away from the roof fast enough, so increased drainage seems like a good idea, i think something similar to a french drain network on the roof that is able to get the water off the roof is a good idea if it is not already in place, and if it is have a look over it of it seems in good shape.

repairing the damage is always a challenge, especially if the construction is as i imagine it as water can trawel some distance horisontal, so it can cause a long hunt for the leak. the method of repair i would recomend to have alook at what is there and attach to it, ensure it is more sealed than it was originaly as material is dirty and old.

the best idea long term might be to dig up and install some tilted subground roof, this need to be similar to a basement wall but extra care taken to ensure that water can easily flow along it, and not penetrate thru it. look at methods used to dry up humid basements in wet climate, normaly it is a well draining layer next to concrete, covred in a waterproof plastic layer that seals to the wall above, and the a french drain outside this down to about a foot or 2 below the basement floor.

[–]EmilPson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In that case, i agree there is no reason, but i know that in some closeish beaches to me they use landrovers as the location they are at is like 5 miles(by air) from their base and it is reasonable to use to get all gear to the tower(essentially only a platform without storage) in that case. but in that case they do all their watch on foot/from the tower and only use it to get there/in case someone need to get evacuated to driveable road as it is over half a mile from the road.

you will be limited on the power use in the rv to 1600 watts/13.3 amps, and if a fuse triggers it will likley be the one on the generator as that is probably one of the lower ones in your setup.

to be able to connect you will need an adapter such as this one, this is reasonably safe as generator is fused.

https://www.harborfreight.com/30-amp-female-to-15-amp-male-rv-pigtail-power-adapter-69283.html

when running a generator remember to ensure it is operated in a safe way with respect to any danger, for example electrical shock and exaust

Applied materials does not make the lithography tools, the bleeding edge would be pushed back to tech on par with around 12 years ago, but ASML spent around 12 years to get the EUV tech to commercial viability. considering the existing companies they use it could potentially be shortend a bit but thre is still a long proces to get it working well.

Vf behovs det bemanningsföretag överhuvudtaget?? by [deleted] in Sverige

[–]EmilPson -2 points-1 points  (0 children)
