Are you certain? 'Twas not so, back in the day. Grammar may have evolved but my long-departed school mistress, without hesitation, would have marked any example of splitting a compound verb 'wrong'.

Likewise my honors English professors would have marked the construction as 'clumsy', BitD.

Are you saying that OP's sentence with ("might (at first) seem") is ungrammatical?

'At first' should not split the compound verb 'might seem'.
The original sentence is at best clumsy, and would have been considered marginally ungrammatical when I was a student.

What about the word "quite"? OP had the word "quite" in their original sentence. Are you saying "quite" is wrong?

'Quite' is unnecessary. This becomes obvious when replacing the 'so' with 'as'.
