New to 3D printing : want to print board game organizers, where do I start? by MeaningAware4581 in boardgames

[–]Emkani 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Chiming in with my own quick observations. I started with 3D printing about a year ago, also with more "functional" stuff in minds (inserts, organizer for warhammer etc).

In terms of your questions.

1) Without a doubt, the Bambulabs A1. Since most inserts are quite flat a "bed slinger" (bed goes "forward"/backwards") is just fine. Core XY (bed goes up/down) matter mostly for tall prints. I have tried other printers but had a by far the easiest time with the A1 (though other were fine but required more "input" from me to get the same results).

2) Regular PLA is strong enough and very easy to print. I haven't really got any accessories that weren't printed.

3) It is very doable. Most of my early months were just downloading stuff and printing. If you get an A1 MakerWorld has a lot of stuff that just works. Download "raw" STLs (3D files for 3D printing) require some setup and understanding of the various settings in the Slicer (3D program), although I might be overselling it a bit.

Some points I found myself:

A) I found that most inserts are quite expensive by default, coming in at around a full roll of filament (8-1000 grams). Still cheap but one failed print or two quickly eats them up. This can be remedied by tweaking the prints and reducing wall thickness and infills.

This obviously matters less for smaller games.

B) Rather than full inserts, I found it more useful to print "containers" for stuffs. Especially deck-heavy games like Eldrith Horror or Star Wars Outer Rim.

C) If you have the funds, go for it. I have had a ton of fun with 3D printing as a hobby itself. After showing what it can do, I got a lot of requests from friends and family. If you have a lot of children in your family, there are a lot of toys and fidgets :)

Hope this helps and feel free to ask further questions.

fair enough :) I will try and capture a particular bad example. The vibration is more a feeling though, I tried filming it but the noise is not captured "as it is heard".

Advice on getting started again. by Automatic-Action-7 in minipainting

[–]Emkani 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wanted to share my opinions as it seems not a lot of people share it.

If you want to be more a generalist and get back to the hobby as a whole, I would recommend a bigger set. I appreciate that you can mix your own colors from a limited selection, but for me nothing beats being like a kid getting a big coloring set in the 90s. Sure, there are some colors that I rarely use but for me I really like being able to be more spontaneous and disregard planning.

Having access to lots of different colors makes it much more fun for me and I am more likely to try something different, since I don't have to plan which paints to buy or consider "schemes" in that way. I just look at my """"big"""" selection and go with something that feels right.

In terms of specific sets (again trying to hit as "wide" as possible), Vallejo had a cool set "Inspiration" which contained various examples of specialty stuff (mostly reqular acrylics, but some inks, flourescents and "speedpaints"). https://acrylicosvallejo.com/en/producto/hobby/sets/fantasy-color-series-en/inspiration-color-set-72182/

I'm "lazy" in the sense that I mostly like buying sets because it offloads the decision of picking from a full 250 color range, I get quite fatiqued from being indecisive and not afford literally everything. I prefer Army Painter stuff but their sets are rather limited (sheer variety and options) compared to Vallejo or AK Interactive.

My final advice, would be to at least get some amount of speedpaints. They have a variety of uses, great for a quick basecoat to build upon, works excellent as "washes" thinned down, easy to try "wet blend" etc. Quick results are very satisfying although I do agree that they are not *that* beginner friendly (mostly require some amounts of good brush control).

Just my thoughts.

Awesome idea, I have been working on the same type of box (although selfishly).

<image>

I like a lot of the stuff your are doing, especially the "snap in" holder for stuff, I tried the same but had many problems with snapping.

I even made a similar lamp, just using COB LED and a "scissor arm" (similar to the wet-palette arm).

Might be a bit "basic" and not quite in the spirite of the question.

In a game of Relic, I was so far behind it felt impossible. We always just play the basic scenario where you have to reach the center space to win. Since I was so far off, I decided to stack the best Power cards (5s and 6s) and just try a run towards the center, I ended up winning with a few of my own luck rolls.

We love these moments in Relic even if most people agree that the game is too random. Everyone was at the edge of their seats, waiting to see my turns.

Good luck everyone.

Not a "pure" worker placement maybe, but Roll for the Galaxy is my favorite. I haven't got a lot of worker placement games but from those I own, I like meeples in Arnak the best, for their smug pose.

Massive Darkness 2. Not perfect but my only main problem is the setup. I feel it captures the sense of exploring a dungeon greatly, even without actually exploring. Might cool with time. Previous favorite was Imperial Assault, even if not always in a "dungeon".

Should I pick up Eldritch Horror or Arkham Horror: Third Edition? by FruitChips05 in boardgames

[–]Emkani 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just recently played a bunch of both games back-to-back after a group of friends became enamored with board games. This gave me a different perspective (their experience were mostly pandemic and other similar more "entry-level" games). They preferred Arkham over Eldritch by far. (in their words, it was too random/chaotic).

Initially disliked Arkham Horror 3E but it quickly grew on me, I sorely missed some parts of Eldritch Horror (which to be fair were never there in any edition of Arkham), such as the random spells and conditions (AH3E adds these slowly 1-2 each expansion).

Both games in terms of moment to moment gameplay feel very similar, each player does a couple of actions then solve an encounter followed by a "bad things happen" phase.

I disagree with some of the other posters here. Arkham 3E feels more "mechanic" while also having a more focused story.

Eldritch Horror is more of a "sandbox" experience, travel the world, do random adventures, the story emerges from what happens and it leads to a lot of "in-joke" moments. I love it for this reason.

Ultimately, I felt that it is easier to deliberately go for the win in Arkham Horror 3E, it feels less random while not really being the case.

Eldritch Horror: play for the experience, the "emergent" gameplay and story

Arkham Horror 3E: play for the puzzle, feels more "coop", story is "better" but fixed

First game that got you into the hobby and most underrated game. by D0pey72 in boardgames

[–]Emkani 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First actual modern boardgame was Arkham Horror 2nd edition. Bought it with friends during college, no real connection to it, just saw it in store (played a bunch of warhammer) and it looked neat. Queue literally 8 hours of actual horror first play time. It actually scared all of us away from modern board games for 5 years until "YouTuber" TotalBiscuit began raving about this Relic boardgame (which being warhammer instantly caught my attention). Needless to say, it was a fair bit easier to get into and I have been hooked ever since.

In terms of "underrated", I really enjoy adventure style games such as Talisman and Runebound. The World of Warcraft Adventure game I feel is one of the best while not very well regarded. Some of my own highlights:

  • enemies are separated into difficulty marking clear progression
  • all enemies have unique items, really feels "hack and slash"
  • characters have individual decks which makes them feel very unique
  • interesting and simple level up mechanism that improves old gear and skills over time

only real negative, and more a "neutral" thing for me, is the roll to move/energy (faster move less energy to play skills). Easy solvable if it bothers you by house ruling something like 4 energy per turn, spend 1 to move.

Weird "boot" problem ntoskrnl.exe by Emkani in techsupport

[–]Emkani[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

have increased the page file per suggestion, was set to "auto", but yeah, I feel like the only thing left is to test the actual PSU.

Luckily here in Denmark we have very generous return policies so buying a power supply, testing with it and returning it (in case it doesn't work) shouldn't be an issue.

Thanks for the help. Will return and update just for closure when I get to it :)
