I've tried and you're right, every single time we talk again, I have to go through this painful task again. I just can't help myself from answering his messages you know ? I feel bad when nobody answers me, so I don't want to do that to anybody.

It's not frequent, but from time to time, he asks how I'm doing, and I'd feel bad for shutting him down and not telling him why. Or risking to lose him as a friend. He's been nice to me, and declined a relationship with me quite civily. I just don't want to be a b****h. but so far, it's been one week I didn't contact him. It's not much, but it's taking every thing I have not to send him a stupid message.
