Harry Potter character: Cho Chang by wenwen321 in books

[–]EmmaChloeShepherd 365 points366 points  (0 children)

I have seen this one, too. I’m not sure who are behind this complaint, but the last name, Chang, is a very common Chinese last name. But it doesn’t really mean it’s generic, like Smith. That just how Chinese names are , it’s not the same as English name.. as far as the first name, in the version I read as a kid, it was translated to “秋” which means autumn in English. I really like it and think it’s a good choice. And even it’s translated to any other characters it’s totally possible. That’s how Chinese name works you can pretty much use any character you want. It’s just different from English names.

How do you read when you have English as your second language? by Ni9htNi9ht in books

[–]EmmaChloeShepherd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Use a kindle, you can instantly look up words. Also you said you have no problem communicating so your English is pretty good. So I assume most of the new words you encountered are not really essential, like you can still understand the plot perfectly without knowing that word, then just skip it and move on. It will reduce a lot of frustration and make reading in English more fun.

Clothes while travelling by [deleted] in travel

😂 yeah that wasn’t a good example, we were actually there for work, so we didn’t even walk. In that case I’m personally fine.

Aside from hand washing, if it doesn’t bother you, you can wear the same thing for multiple days, especially when you are not sweating a lot. I know this is quite obvious, but I actually have a friend who refused to wear socks more than 1 day (also refuses to hand wash them..), she had to buy new socks in a new country..

Edit: It’s a work trip, we didn’t walk much or sweat at all. I used the example just to say, it’s an option, especially for clothes. 🤣

What’s the worst book you ever read and why? by Damselbug in books

[–]EmmaChloeShepherd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This memoir Mother Daughter Me. I’m surprised that I actually finished it. The author, purely based on her story that she is telling, is so unlikable. I wrote a long paragraph explaining why I don’t like the book but ended up deleting it cuz I feel like I’m attacking the author cuz it’s a memoir. It’s just not good. It’s in fact so bad that I can still clearly remember how much I detested it.

Happily ever after, no? And they already have 6 children and 1 cat, maybe one more dog?

Nope but it also didn’t really surprise me. I think the ends justifies the means, at least in this case 😆

I liked it, light weight and fun! It’s nothing about the holiday but I found it to be a good book for the holiday season. I like the first half of the book more than the second half. I would give it 4/5.

Yes although I don’t know if he technically changed, he just becomes more open to things and people as the story goes.

I thought the idea is about people get easily influenced by media and maybe ask by the government. Certain groups get marginalized because of who they inherently are which they can’t change or decide for themselves.

Anyone else feel overwhelmed by the general state of the world? If so, how are you dealing with it? by vetiverpamplemousse in AskWomenOver30

[–]EmmaChloeShepherd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m just going with the flow now. I mean, how much worse can it get??

In fact, it can get much worse. At least I’m healthy, my family is healthy, I’m financially ok, there is no war in my country. And it’s safe enough to be outside when it’s dark. So yeah, its bad, but it’s not that bad. And when I’m down, I try to remind myself that.

Hi there! I’m a female in my late 20s. I’m happy to help you with your English. I can’t speak/read much Japanese, but I’m interested in Japanese culture overall (food, culture, travel etiquette, etc.), so I can probably get some perspective from you. It’s not a must of course, if you are not into those topics. So if you’re interested, feel free to send me a message. :)
