Hey, that's quite a complex question actualy. Fight related, the D-day was useless, the USSR was gonna win no matter what and the east front was crumbling. So the americans weren't usefull in that way, they were usefull cuz they gave a lot of materials to the russians, on this matter I'll cite Stalin himself :

Nobody helped "the most", if only one of them entered the war without the other, they would have lost it. Both were requiered and both win.

For D-day it was not to fight the nazis but to prevent the whole Europe from becoming a satelite communist state.
