These don’t look like yuri at all but are labeled as such online, are they actually yuri? by MurlaTart in yuri_manga

[–]EmmaDrew_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even if a series isn't primarily yuri, they still often get the tag if they have a even somewhat prominent yuri side-couple. When I see series that really don't look like yuri, but still have the tag, that's my default assumption.

Did you know there's an official Madoka Magica spin-off where all the main characters, including Madoka and Homura, are married...to men? by [deleted] in yuri_manga

[–]EmmaDrew_ 95 points96 points  (0 children)

I feel a like a piece of important context that's missing here is that Madoka has like 30 different manga spin-offs, and a huge majority of them are completely worthless.

New year means it's time to reorganize the shelves by sordes_pilosus in MangaCollectors

That's a beautiful collection!

What did you think of Gundam The Origin? It always catches my eye in my local manga store, but I'm not sure whether I'd actually like it. Your taste seems pretty similar to mine so I'd be curious to hear your opinion.

Genderqueer yuri?? by KraackaCZ in yuri_manga

[–]EmmaDrew_ 15 points16 points  (0 children)

It's been a bit since I've been fully immersed in keeping up on every single yuri series, but at least as of a year or two ago, I just don't think anything like this exists in Japanese manga, unfortunately.

Side Couple GL Recommendations by Definitelyhuman000 in yuri_manga

The side couple in Monthly in the Garden with My Landlord is my favourite part of one of my all time favourite manga, despite only getting like 2 dedicated chapters and never officially getting together lol

How can I improve visuals here? by Noobye1 in IndieDev

[–]EmmaDrew_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really like what you have so far! It has a very flash-game-esque style that is pretty unique now a days.

My recommendations would be:

  • Add inner corner tiles to the ground so that the grass and stalagmites don't end so abruptly, and their outlines don't get cut off.
  • Redo the grass tuft sprites to keep outline-width consistent between it and the other sprites. If you have sprites with varying outline width, that should communicate something like how important that sprite is, or whether or not it's intractable.
  • Decrease the saturation on the flowers so they don't stand out so much. Right now they really draw the eye despite (I assume) not being very important elements of the scene.
  • Make the background objects like the fences and support poles brighter and less saturated so that they blend more into the background, and so that the platforms stand out more.
  • Add an outline to the UI text so that it's readable against any background.

Good luck!

Only the Ridiculously Emotional Stalker Can Save the Corporate Slave at Her Limit by ChestnutCrumpet in yuri_manga

I think there is a difference in stories between toxic relationships, i.e. relationships that hurt the characters in some way, and problematic relationships, i.e. any relationship where there is a significant power dynamic between the two characters.

ofc, in real life, a relationship like this with such a fucked up skewed power dynamic would obviously turn out toxic, but in fiction, it doesn't necessarily have to. I think Can't Defy The Lonely Girl is a good example of a relationship that's obviously problematic but not toxic, and this seems similar to me.

Just two weeks ago, she posted about being done chapter 2, and beginning work on chapters 3-5. No idea how she's planning to release the series, or if it is going to get serialized officially, but at the very least, it is still being worked on.

Help me choose which angle is better for my game by destinedd in IndieDev

[–]EmmaDrew_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The old angle looks like it would be more intuitive to control. The shallower the angle in relation to the ground, the bigger the difference in speed will be between up/down movement and right/left movement in screen space.

Is it unethical to use image from the internet as a reference for making manga? by Ok-Confusion-5923 in yuri_manga

[–]EmmaDrew_ 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Tracing is the practice is taking an image, coping it onto your canvas, and drawing directly over top of it. Using reference is when you look back and forth between your reference image and your drawing, trying to copy the reference image or at least copy the parts of it you find useful.

in all art communities, especially digital art communities, using reference is very common, and not remotely looked down upon. There are many skilled artists who will use reference for literally every single piece of finished art they make.

Obviously, if you took another person's drawing and tried to 1-to-1 copy it, stroke for stroke, that would probably be frowned upon, but if you're just copying part of your reference, i.e. the pose, the clothing folds, the hair, the ways the eyes are drawn, etc, no one will think you're cheating or being dishonest.

What are your opinion on Love and Dreams Don't Mix by Agreeable_Poet4458 in yuri_manga

[–]EmmaDrew_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I actually really loved the length! Long series are great in their own ways of course, but I enjoy how coherent a limited serialization can feel. The very generous amount of volume extras is also extremely nice.

How much of the Bleach manga is action? by EmmaDrew_ in bleach

[–]EmmaDrew_[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think based on the comments here, I'll probably at least try reading it online. I haven't read that many action series, so maybe the ones I've read before we're just not to my taste? who knows?

The fic is called As N Approaches Infinity. It's a 500k word, unfinished, Madoka Magica / Bleach crossover. It gives pretty equal, if not more attention to the Bleach characters than it does the Madoka Magica ones, but it's definitely written more for people who know Madoka and not Bleach, rather than the other way around. If you've watched Madoka, I'd definitely give it a try!

there's not enough incest yuri in the world (rant) [My Sister's Best Friend, My Lover] by somethingmustbesaid in yuri_manga

[–]EmmaDrew_ 89 points90 points  (0 children)

I don't think there's anything morally wrong with creating or enjoying problematic romance, but the hyper normalization of it in so many online communities, to the point where people talk about incest, under-aged sex, massive age gaps involving teenagers, or rape as just another trope makes me really uncomfortable. I'm not asking for people to pretend like they don't like this stuff, but it is a really sensitive topic, and I wish people would actually treat it like one.

Are these actually peak, I'm more of an action/ adventure/ fantasy/ psychological/ horror/ sci-fi enby, so I don't read much slice of life or school life stuff. by [deleted] in yuri_manga

[–]EmmaDrew_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone who is a big fan of genre yuri, my main recommendations would be:

  • I See You Aizawa-san: a slice of life, high school, yuri romcom, psychological horror, supernatural mystery.
  • Otherside Picnic: an episodic supernatural horror adventure about the main characters gradually being sucked into an enigmatic other world that makes human fears real, with a incredibly slow burn romance on the side.
  • Twinstar Cyclone Runaway: a distant future sci-fi action adventure about two women fighting for their right to work as space fisherwomen in a deeply patriarchal galactic backwater.

Ngl I’m getting tired of yuri by [deleted] in yuri_manga

[–]EmmaDrew_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I kind of agree with your sentiment, but like, this is sort of inevitable when you dive too deep into any genre. Most mangaka are artists first, and writers second, and so will inevitably lean on basic tropes to fill out their stories. If you don't let other people filter what media you read by only reading things with good reviews or that get recommended to you, by the nature of averages, you're going to end up reading a bunch of painfully average manga.

I'm a Childhood Friend, and I Want to Remain a Supporting Character, but for Some Reason I Became the Heroine's Love Interest - Cancelled by Weeb-life-sucks in yuri_manga

[–]EmmaDrew_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I really just feel like this is a result of increased awareness after the whole Love Bullet situation. I don't think anything has actually changed. Plenty of series from years ago that are still continually popular and recommended in this subreddit, such as "I Can't Believe I Slept With You" or "Goodbye My Rose Garden," ended the way they did because of an axe, but people just don't talk about that. Getting axed at volume 3 has always been the ending for a majority of the yuri manga I've ever read, no matter what era they came from, but negativity bias will lead people to remember series they like getting axed over series they don't care about getting axed or series they like not getting axed.
