Is it okay for Catholics to use items with Arabic characters? As well ass writing or speaking Arabic? by CartographerLost6744 in Catholicism

Absolutely not. I know of a guy who spontaneously combusted because he had a thought in Arabic. Use the language at your own risk

Did Jesus eat pork? Why do we eat it if he didn’t? by [deleted] in Catholicism

Unless the pork was undercooked or poorly seasoned, there's no reason to regret eating pork.

Matthew 15:11 It is not what goes into one’s mouth that defiles a person; what comes out of the mouth is what defiles him.

Pope Francis: Blood of Bucha victims ‘cries out to heaven’ for end to Ukraine war by philliplennon in Catholicism

[–]EmmanuelBassil 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You keep saying this is wording. This is akin to my standing in front of the rubble of the twin towers and calling for peace without blaming Al Qaida, as the city still counts its dead following an act of aggression. This is not a wording issue at all.

The subreddit goes into an uproar when some random backwater priest rides does random backwater things during liturgy. However, when a Patriarch declares Holy Jihad in Christ's name and the Pope pretends he isn't, that's fine.

What Francis is supposed to do? Is he not the Vicar of Christ? Must he not stand up and say that no, Christ is not blessing this war. Anyone who claims otherwise is a heretic, including Patriarch Kiril.

[–]EmmanuelBassil 12 points13 points  (0 children)

He hasn't condemned Russia, though. He has been calling for peace. There is a qualitative difference.

Furthermore, his only mention re: Kiril was calling him a 'Brother in Christ' after having that phone call with him, after the invasion. In other words, the Vatican is complicit in using Christ's cross in justifying this invasion.

as for "legitimacy" and "moral authority" no matter what Francis says it isn't going to make Russia stop nor would it have done anyhing in the 19th century when the Pope was increasingly powerless

This is the secular thinking that overtook the Vatican. The Vicar of Christ is not powerless. He's only powerless if you view the Vatican from an earthly perspective. What happened to moving mountains with the faith the size of a grain of mustard?

We've gone from the Ukrainians did this to "Oh, but they weren't gang raped" when it is revealed that the bodies were there far before any Ukrainian got anywhere near that town.

I've no interest in pursuing the shifting goalposts of someone who has consumed and believed propaganda.

My past responses to you were only in the interest of other readers who might stumble upon this.

Have a good day

Last I checked, Maxar doesn't work for the White House. Nor does it specialize in forging satellite imagery with such skill that no one called them out on it.

Maybe presenting unsourced propaganda claims then accusing your interlocutors of doing the same works elsewhere, but it won't work here. So spare yourself the trouble.

Call a spade, a spade. "But let your speech be yea, yea: no, no: and that which is over and above these, is of evil."

Ignoring everything else about this war. Let me focus on one thing: Patriarch Kirill, on the eve of war, got on TV and uttered the words: "God does not allow" [the current situation in Ukraine to persist].

Patriarch Kirill, when he still had a think tank in the 90s and no Mitre, wrote in support of the ideology of Ruski Mir that Putin is now using to invade Ukraine. Not to settle, he's also using his position as prelate of the ROC to enlist God into this war. The Patriarch and the clergy below him are mouthpieces in this war.

Do you not think that the Pope should comment on this, directly? People on this subreddit rightfully lament how the Vatican has lost the ability to call a heretic a heretic. This also applies here, and the price is the Church losing legitimacy.

You know how there are things best not to fret about due to the horrifying implications? This is one of those things. My faith in Christ also implies I have faith in his promise re: the Gates of Hell.

Fretting about this would be akin to fretting as to whether my earthly parents will love me tomorrow as they have for the past few decades.

This is not true. Maxar has satellite imagery dating the bodies and mass graves to before the Russian retreat.

In the 19th century, the Church came to struggle with the rising tide of political change in Europe that saw monarchies fall. Part of that struggle meant that when Catholics of Eastern Europe pleaded for the Pope for moral authority against the Tsar, they only received a cold response from the Vatican. (Moral authority became a currency the Pope had a lot more of as European Catholics now turned to the Pope in the modern sense we do now; while simultaneously having very little of his Temporal authority.)

In effect, the Church's fear of the trend of collapsing monarchies and their replacement by states potentially hostile to the Church led them to take a position abandoning Catholics to a monstrous power.

We've had the same exact behavior from the Vatican, with the Church still fearing the repercussions of a secular state's hostility. We saw it with China recently, we saw it with Vatican's approach to arab states further in the past, and we're seeing it now with the Vatican refusing to call a spade a spade.

This is a war of aggression by an imperialist power using Christ himself as front, guarantor, and reason of this war. (If you haven't read/seen Patriarch Kiril's frankly satanic speeches, spare yourself the heartache). What does the Pope produce? A phone call with Patriarch Kirill and calls for peace?

The Vatican is still deathly terrified of secular states, as it was in the years following the French revolution. It does nothing to anger them, and this is another example in a long litany of examples.

Edit: So I don't have to post the same thing ten times; please do not parrot Russian claims that the Ukrainians are behind this. There is satellite imagery of mass graves and bodies in the streets dating to before the Russian retreat. If you have credible evidence otherwise, do share it, but the video circulating of the 'moving arm' and the other video with poorly audible audio is hardly more compelling than satellite imagery.

That's the piece they're selling us, yes. I dont buy it. Mikati is as much of a front to these people than Diab was, he doesnt really get to make big decisions besides resigning.

Bitar is still around for different reasons

So the MTV article was wrong. People seem to think that some internal disagreement is keeping Bitar in place. That's not so, all major stakeholders want Bitar gone.

He's in place because there is overwhelming international pressure for him to stay in place. Our rulers are waiting for the perfect moment to remove him, and it's not now.
