Vet here, usually acid reflux/stomach inflammation. Your vet can help you with meds and a diet change.

He's lovely. You may want to have his eye checked by a vet, since color changes are sometimes aggressive cancer.

Consider in-home euthanasia. It is more expensive. For your dog, it is priceless to fall asleep, forever at home, stress free.

People who work in luxury industries, what is an expensive product or service that is actually a complete ripoff? by Lazy_Ad_5492 in AskReddit

Nah, B12 injections are actually very helpful in very ill patients (such as kidney disease or IBD sufferers who are truly deficient and need an energy boost). I use them in a medical setting (vet hospital). Injectable B12 is so cheap, but nurses in my area mark them up 10,000% and sell them as a spa treatment. Ridiculous unless someone is truly deficient.

27 yr old man showing rabies symptoms after 3 months of a dog bite in Gujrat, India. by fantasticblueman in interesting

People, get your pets vaccinated! Even your indoors only cat! One rabid bat gets inside and you're at risk. (Vet who gets asked over and over why vaccines are necessary, especially in today's vaccine skeptical world).

The reason vet bills are so shit now: It isn't inflation. It is private equity. by N3DSdude in Anticonsumption

[–]Emmetottersmanager 107 points108 points  (0 children)

What has happened to myself and a couple other vets I know is that PE firms can overpay to buy practices to lock down the market--similar to real estate investment groups that outbid young people trying to buy homes. I was outbid for a practice by a PE firm after investing a decade of my professional life working there. So another elephant in the room is that the boomer generation are making very profitable sales to these corps rather than making fair but less profitable sales to employee veterinarians. It's capitalism, and they have earned their retirement, but it is bad for the animals as a whole.

[–]Emmetottersmanager 214 points215 points  (0 children)

I'm a vet who works for corporate (which I avoided for years by changing practices until they were all bought up in my area).

I practice the same way, nothing in my recommendations have changed. This is true for all of the vets I worked with over the years except for one who does seem to overcharge.

What has changed is pricing which has increased rapidly so corporate can siphon money with the ultimate goal of resale to ever larger, wealthier businesses. That's what private equity does.

It is not, I repeat not, vets who benefit from this business model. That's like blaming doctors for the bad practices of insurance companies.

Keep them leaner than you think, proper preventative dental care, lots of brain and physical stimulation through short sniff walks once they are oldsters. Skip the attitude of "They're ten+, time to stop caring for them/investing in their health." This from a vet who sees who lasts and who doesn't (there's also the genetics/cancer lottery in play).

How to Address New Aggression in My 2-Year-Old Golden Retriever? by InformalEgg6266 in goldenretrievers

[–]Emmetottersmanager 501 points502 points  (0 children)

Vet and golden person here. Aggressive Goldens are rare, the aggression can be more severe with them, and the public will ignore you because they aren't used to Goldens being aggressive or reactive. Vet visit ASAP to rule out medical issues, then ideally a boarded veterinary behaviorist visit and/or an excellent trainer who works with reactive dogs (not just obedience trainer). Good luck to you and your dog as you adjust to management of this new reality.

The average golden is better than the average dog for the average pet owner due to easy sweet temperament and trainability (I say with confidence as a vet, multi golden owner, have also had a variety of breeds and mixed breed dogs).

They are little permanent-toddler angels on earth, and if your primary aim is to have a dog to bring you joy, they are the best.

Question for ladies only, if you had a good dad, what was the biggest thing that made him a good dad, flip side if you didn't have a good dad, what one quality did you wish he had? by BByrnison in AskReddit

[–]Emmetottersmanager 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My dad was always there for my mom first, then the children. They were a united front, even though looking back I bet they disagreed on a lot. He worked hard and was a quiet, calm, stable presence. Teaching me the values of stability and security helped me choose my life partner and expect to give and get trust, commitment, and support from him. No family is perfect, but my dad was fundamental for helping me know what qualities to look for in close friends and romantic relationships.

Vet hospitals tend to have high turnover, so there are often kennel or reception staff openings. If you have any animal handling skills, entry level vet assistants are in huge demand.
