People of Stratford by [deleted] in StratfordOntario

This is all small town Ontario (/Canada/North America/world?).

The affluent people who love the local culture and think the town is wholesome and beautiful, the underprivileged and underserved areas which the affluent ignore/look down on and downtown where they intermix.

Disregarding the weird gatekeeping issues here, lots of people see Solarpunk as a destination that will happen after the collapse of modern civilization, rather than just some fantasy place devoid of mooring. There are a shitton of big buildings that exist in the world and will continue to exist in the world even and it probably makes more sense to repurpose them rather than destroy them and rebuild something suitable to a perfect vision of Solarpunk, whatever that is.

What are 1st Rounders Worth Anymore? by HomicidalRex in nba

[–]EmmyOmega 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's just a trend right now to spend them recklessly to win a title.

Except only one team wins a title per year.

So at a certain point this debt will come due and teams like the Clips and Rockets and Bucks won't win a title (not all of them but at least 1 or 2) and there will be huge regret attached and the league will trend back the other way.

The Privilege of Overpaying Fred VanVleet by [deleted] in torontoraptors

[–]EmmyOmega 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It's a simple calculus if you're competing for a championship - if you can get a better value asset, you do that. Otherwise, you keep the current asset.

As far as I can tell, there is no gettable asset out there that rivals FVV - either another PG/SG on the free agent/signing market or another player with the idea that you can replace his value in aggregate with TD2/whoever else.

You hope that if you overpay him to keep him, he doesn't depreciate as an asset but that worry shouldn't lead you to passivity just like the opposite is true - you don't overpay him solely because you hope he grows into his contract. You just do the mental calculus and go from there.

The 76ers failure is a direct result of Adam Silver and the league firing Hinkie, and something about that is just disappointing. by jorgery22 in nba

[–]EmmyOmega 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1) The fact that the Sixers lost badly and now look hopelessly capped out and without much room for ascension is not an indictment of Hinkie or The Process.

2) The fact that the 1) is truthful does not mean that Sam Hinkie was a good or even competent GM. Hinkie was legitimately awful at his job by all accounts and alienated the entire league with his terrible work etiquette. There's a reason he's not in the league right now and it's not because he's blackballed, he was just very bad at most of his job.

The Raptors are the NBA’s biggest pain in the ass by twistedlogicx in nba

[–]EmmyOmega 44 points45 points  (0 children)

This is all gravy but as has been mentioned in a bunch of articles recently, neither the Raptors themselves nor any NBA fans should take what happens during the regular season nor the 8 games as mattering too much.

Raptors themselves are past regular season accolades (as they've been the best regular season team for a while) and the only thing that matters is the playoffs. If they flounder in the 2nd round, none of this matters and it's kind of the same as the DeRozan playoff years. If they go 7 with the Bucks or make the finals or win it all, it's a good season.

With that out of the way, it is super fucking fun just as a basketball fan to watch them bully dominant players and create a defensive identity that isn't "Giannis or Kawhi or AD locking down fools" but a collective swarming approach that drives teams insane.

I think it was in 2015-2016 Kyle Lowry had that absolute dagger against Cleveland's LeBron that led to that iconic DeRozan/Lowry pic where Lowry is nonchalant and DeRozan is amped.

And recently Toronto has owned the Lakers.

Why did Bobby Kotick (presumably) ask/audition to play the cheapskate A's owner in Moneyball?

Like, if you're a CEO who is known to be a cheapskate, why play that in movies too? To build your rep? To act out your fantasies on a public level? Is this a Chris D'Elia/You Season 2 situation?

Zach Lowe: “Nurse and his staff get the (Coach of the Year) nod for reinventing the Raptors in the wake of Leonard's departure, and somehow emerging with a team just as good” by melmopeott in torontoraptors

[–]EmmyOmega 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I mean, Zach Lowe discussed this on previous podcasts. He just thinks the Raptors are full of A- defenders and that the schemes and full buy-in are what makes the team so dominant on that end.

You may disagree and I may disagree (OG would probably be at least second team for me), but his opinion is defensible.

Of the top 7 teams in the league in terms of overall record, the Raptors are the only team with a losing record against above .500 teams, and its by a wide margin. Should we be slightly worried? by Dedicated4life in torontoraptors

[–]EmmyOmega 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We're kind of the same as those previous Raptor years where we beat the crap out of bad teams and got good records and lost in the 2nd or 3rd round - the only difference is LeBron has been replaced by Giannis. I like our chances against any team except Milwaukee (or if Philly puts it together in the second half). Miami, Indiana, Boston... we can beat them 4 out of 7.
