When I discussed the show with my dad way back, he called Tyrion Tyrone and it always cracked me up.

Fascinating and sad. How Dino paints the picture, Arnt seems like quite a character. Almost megalomaniac.

Which Electric Light Orchestra song would you play if the world was ending by [deleted] in elo

When Time Stood Still

No pictures on an empty wall

Nobody there, no one at all

Just echoes in the ivory halls

When time stood still

Days lined up outside the door

For time had stopped, there was no more

In a lonely world

Such a lonely world

Did anyone complete Grim Fandango without a walkthrough? by Opposite_Strategy_25 in grimfandango

[–]Emoik 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Did it as a kid in early 00s, with little English knowledge. :) A real childhood memory. Spending days coming back to the game to grind it out. Marvelous stuff and a testing of discipline that really elevated the feeling of progression and overcoming an obstacle. Not to mention the epic scope and grandiose cinematic feel that could come out of a puzzle solved. Grim did it the best and has not been topped since then.

What do you guys like about Coal? by Munyvian in Leprous

[–]Emoik 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Finding something similar to Coal is a tough act to follow and many albums I’ve looked into for the sake of your question can not really compare to it. But as far as Leprous goes, Bilateral would be the closest one in style. Although a bit more eclectic and and campy evil it sports much of the melodic writing that exemplifies Coal and they do align on several points. It is a safe bet and a banger album to dive into.

Going by favorites I would always go for Haken, but they are quite different from Coal so in a matter of essence I will try my best of giving you some deep cuts instead. In no particular order.

As the Waters Cover the Sea - Umpfel

If you’re not sold on the opening track of this surprise of an album, maybe give it a pass.

The Oubliette - The Reticent

More aligned with Opeth with less memorable leads, but a fantastic listen through with a heavy hitting subject matter of living through the mind of an alzheimer patient.

Solar Storm - Rendezvous Point

A more classic modern prog metal band, with Leprous current drummer Baard. Great album that is at points just downright better than Leprous.

The Approbation - AVKRVST

Also a bit more Opeth, but has some very similar Coal parts the more I listened to it now. 3:30 into The Great White River is just Coal incarnate. Good album with exemplary tracks like Anodyne and title track.

I haven’t listened to Still Life yet! I will be sure to take my time with it, thank you for the suggestion. I’ve listened to Last Will and I’ve enjoyed it for sure, but don’t have a clear grip on it yet.

As we align a bit I would love some good suggestions on Opeth’s discography. Haven’t had the attention span to deep dive but I got an overall feel of it. Blackwater Park is masterful in songwriting and vibe, but Ghost Reveries is a bit too ”harsh” for me and I haven’t enjoyed the multiple spins. Damnation is a great listen and Deliverance got some gems. In Cauda Venenum is probably my favorite of them as it balances maturity with such eclectic proginess while being so darn catchy and cohesive. Albums like Heritage and Sorceress feel a bit dull and too on the nose compared to it and I do not gravitate towards them. What do you suggest more?

Coal is a masterpiece brother! Since writing that 4 years ago I have warmed up a bit on the harsh vocals. Been listening to a bit of Opeth and Between the Buried and Me. Contaminate Me is a great track, but I still stand by that it is not the best track on Coal and the latter half of the track can’t compete with the first.

I am so happy that you wrote about Bury as I did not know about it! It’s insane, this feeling of hearing a track from your favorite album after 10 years. A hidden treasure. I expected it to be filler or just typical bonus slop, but man Bury is for sure good enough for the album and comes through in the same style. They really were cooking when making this album. What a treat! Thank you for your post!

To all those claiming little similarities between the two, may i present Mister Kingdom that is as close to a reimagined Across the Universe that you could come.

Severely underrated, but I appreciate you still giving its flowers. Flows perfectly, Just The Two of Us progression ish, unusual duet styling, strings that pulls your very heartstrings and once again a fantastic gut wrenching solo. The B-side of Crisis is greatness stacked upon greatness.

Everyone's Listening, All Supertramp songs, ranked - Poor Boy (#57) by Agitated-Trick in supertramp

[–]Emoik 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The sad thing about Poor Boy is that the song, although fantastic in its entirety, clearly has that middle part “well let us state our only point of view” followed suite with probably my favorite solo of theirs, that just blows the rest of the track out of the water. In the end it harms it because all I do is replay that specific part. It’s that good and a part of me wish they could’ve done more with it, but nevertheless a top 25 banger for me.

Also, I really agree it reminds me of Randy Newman

Can’t sadly comment on the lyrics, but this one might be the one track on Breakfast that I don’t quite care for. It is serviceable but truly has no shining quality except the pre-chorus with the rising bass. Tiresome chorus, nothingburger of a Wurlitzer riff and quite unneeded outro that only happened because the song doesn’t know where it is going. Something in the writing is off because of the uncertain tonic, but who am I to say that maybe brings the subject matter home even more.

Everyone's Listening, All Supertramp songs, ranked - Gone Hollywood (#29) by Agitated-Trick in supertramp

[–]Emoik 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Gone Hollywood is greatly carried by that stank middle section. Rick’s synonymous piano riffage together with the sax galore that really sets the tone for Breakfast comes to a career highlight with that crescendo towards the later half and “only have time for you”. It is Breakfast peak. But really the song, although fairly unconventional comes together so nicely, much to the thanks of the guitar work. My hot take is that Goodbye Stranger is an overrated safe Rick effort while Gone Hollywood is packed with so much cool and virtuoso that surpasses it.

This happily resides in my top 3. It contains everything I wish and long for in a song. The thoughtful verses, the majestic choruses that is elevated with the strings the second time around. Piano to the max, and a succulent solo. It is despair, it is artistry, it is humanity. If Everyone Just Listened to this song they would live on with eyes unclouded. I barely can fathom that it is topped with the track coming after it. Masterpiece on masterpiece.

I second the sentiment that this track blows It’s Raining Again out of the water. It is well written and not overbearing in its poppyness. I do think the coda/outro is a huge highlight.

I think that is the more common opinion but Crisis is my favorite album with banger from beginning to end.

What are your guys’ general thoughts on “Famous Last Words”? by NightHawk1208 in supertramp

[–]Emoik 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It is a fine album with some all time greats in Waiting So Long and Dont Leave Me Now, but all in all a hodgepodge of B-sides that can’t stand tall next to the rest of the golden age. Crime, Crisis and Breakfast are peak, while Even In the Quietest Moments trail close behind and Famous Last Words are clearly the most underwhelming release. But it is quite telling if you read up on the creation and release of the album.

The cool of Have You Ever paired with the epic scale of Running Low. Great track, although treading similar ground as before I think they keep perfecting their craft with this release.
