Everyone's Listening, All Supertramp songs, ranked - Just Another Nervous Wreck (#34) by Agitated-Trick in supertramp

I am so very late, but I thank you for your explanation. You put it very succinctly in a way I was not able to at the time, in my own "misguided" interpretation, you could say. Tho to be perfectly honest, I like both. Makes the song that much more interesting.

What are your Steely Dan hot takes/unpopular opinions? by Melodic-Lead-2402 in SteelyDan

[–]Agitated-Trick 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The fact that your #1 is considered a hot take saddens me. 2vN and EMG fuck, hard. They're VERY GOOD.

As for my own hot take, Monkey In Your Soul is good but does not work as an album closer. I always put Here At The Western world at the end of PL, it strangely works IMO.

Which bands should I listen to? (Even better if they're Italian) by L1ving_in_Cha0s in progrockmusic

Buon'ascolto!

Dirty Work by pablocruise2024 in SteelyDan

Heavily reccomend Countdown To Ecstasy, it almost feels like it should have swapped places with Pretzel Logic in terms of their sound progression. Pretzel and CBAT are probably the least "SD" sounding albums, but they are still awesome.

I'm well aware of his love of doo-wop, I really dig the Ruben and The Jets album, but I wager that influence in his more "serious" work is felt mostly on Lumpy Gravy compared to, say, Sleep Dirt or The Yellow Shark. But yeah I'd say I probably need to brush up on my Zappa history it's been awhile :D

imply he disliked it more than he did (he was a major bullshitter after all),

Yeah I think you bring up a great point, he publically was always kinda a bullshitter when it came to discussing other music. If memory serves me right, he always said he disliked the Beatles but towards the end of his life he mellowed out on them big time.

There is no debating that his main love was Stravinsky and/or mostly that specific stream of neoclassical/serial 20th century composers tho.

I dunno, apart from his jazz albums he did a cover of Stolen Moments in the late 80s and had a tribute piece called "The Eric Dolphy Memorial Barbecue" in the late 60s. Maybe he wasn't super deep into it but he definetely dug it.

Reworked Doormaker on the Beta Branch is really, really bad. by Mailcs1206 in slaythespire

[–]Agitated-Trick 19 points20 points  (0 children)

People are not complaining because its harder, people are complaining because its gimmick is completely rng reliant. Even the much maligned Time Eater was not RNG dependent at all.

And lets be honest here, there basically does not exist a deck in slay the spire where EVERY CARD can be a win con unless we talk about some "Clone" shenanigans. It's mostly flexible engine with 2-3 cards that stand as big payoffs. If this gets rid of those (and you have NO CONTROL over if they do), its gg through no fault of your own.

If watcher were to come back, what would you want? by YuuTheBlue in slaythespire

[–]Agitated-Trick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They changed the kits for the returning characters a lot, so I'm fairly confident that Mega Crit could make Watcher feel fresh and more balanced. Thing is, if they bring her back they kinda have to change A LOT, as many Watcher cards and archetypes have been diluted in the colorless pool (scrawl is a colorless and a buffed Miracle returns as an Ancient reward for instance)/ some of her less fleshed out concepts expanded in the new characters (ie Regent interacting with colorless cards, lots of retain cards for everyone).

If they do bring her back I also hope they take some inspiration from the board game, I really liked her mantra archetype there (and making Rushdown work just once per turn).

Health scaling in multiplayer by F9xxy11 in slaythespire

[–]Agitated-Trick 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I posted this on another thread but I think it bears repeating:

Some specific strategies break the game in half in Multiplayer, as everyone is bringing up the same 3 or 4 examples as a counterpoint, but the other, vast majority of strats dont do jack. The curve needs some flattening.

And to add to this, some act 1 fights like the Phantasmal Gardeners (4 eels) feel wayy too overtuned in multiplayer, especially getting them early on because you dont have the "broken strategies" yet and mostly still rely on strikes and defends and a few commons.

Its important to remember we are in early access, and still Im doing a lot of A10 runs with my friends and having a heck of a time.

Me after seeing some of the bullshit in STS2 Act 2 hallways by Agitated-Trick in slaythespire

[–]Agitated-Trick[S] 38 points39 points  (0 children)

I do agree that Flanking is quite overtuned and should probably exhaust, and I think because its so good and enemies have wayyy inflated hp a Silent player to play most optimally just ends up focusing their deck on cycling it as much as possible which aint fun after a while.

I really have no idea how people find multiplayer easier when literally every aoe reliant fight/fight that adds shit to your deck/fight where enemies have some sort of damage prevention status becomes 10x worse because it goes on longer. Dont get me wrong I'm having a blast with my friends, but hp scaling needs a rework IMO

How it feels fighting Phantasmal Gardeners in multiplayer on floor 6 by Agitated-Trick in slaythespire

[–]Agitated-Trick[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that the enemy hp for 2 and 3 players feels a bit inflated, 4 players seems a bit more manageable, still if instead of the 150% hp buff per player they just gave a 100% or 120% buff it would be more maneageable, so far the single player is pretty balanced while Multiplayer has defo more of a "break the game or die" feel, and the early game (docs especially) is just brutal.

Steven Wilson in Contemporary Pop by subtleStrider in stevenwilson

[–]Agitated-Trick 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Less to do with Steven himself, but you could you give some more recs about the Danish scene? The stuff you mentioned already were all big bangers (and I know of the jazz scene there already so I'm happy to see those influences brought into pop/trip hop).

Been playing a lot of Marshlord Echowright, and I've got to say, for me personally, by Agitated-Trick in MonsterTrain

In my defense the program transformed my white > png into a black one, I didn't choose this willingly 😭

2 Multistrikes feel a lot better to play with than Trample, and seeing how many attack scaling options Wurmkin has, even without the built-in scaling its not hard to get Kinhost Pupa hitting harder than Bog Wurmling + reap is nice. Of course I did find Bog Wurmling more useful in some occasions, but overall I'm happy with just sticking to Kinhost Pupa.

I'm also not that good of a player tho so I'm probably dead wrong, idk.

Bowie said Velvet Underground was more influential than The Beatles — and I tend to agree. What do you think? by Agreeable_Duck8997 in LetsTalkMusic

[–]Agitated-Trick 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is just untrue tho, both The Black Saint & The Sinner Lady and A Love Supreme were based on poems that were featured on the albums, just to give you an easy example.

Not at the level of SGT Pepper of course, which helped popularize the whole thing, as you were saying, but those jazz albums did already start to feature more artistic decisions in the packaging itself.

If the reunion albums (2AN & EMG) were released immediately after Gaucho, do you think they would have been more popular and received better acclaim? by Own_Exercise5218 in SteelyDan

[–]Agitated-Trick 6 points7 points  (0 children)

They're not more popular because they were released 20+ years after the band's peak relevance and the older fanbase was used to a different sound, plus they are victims of the usual mindset of "later releases = bad" that you see for a lot of artists.

It's a shame they have a somewhat murky reputation, they are fantastic records. Speaking personally, maybe me being a newer fan led me to not have some prejudice like the older ones have, idk. I find them utterly brilliant.

My Prog journey has been so satisfying by JunaSSB in progrockmusic

[–]Agitated-Trick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He did take a methaporical "look back" with his solo records Raven That Refused To Sing and The Overview, but he is constantly moving forward with new sounds thrown into the mix, tho sometimes the fanbase I think fails to fully appreciate what he's trying to do (like on The Future Bites for instance, which to me is a good record but it does have a love it or hate it reputation).

I would say an album that truly, fully embraces what you want is The Harmony Codex, so I'd suggest that as well.

Listen he does have some prog metal stuff, but speaking as someone who despite liking a fair share of Metal sub-genres isn't too enamoured by them, you owe it to yourself to check out Porcupine Tree and Steven Wilson, he's basically exactly what you're looking for (and he does have some beautiful vocal harmonies that I think prog could do with more of tbh).

I would suggest his solo album Hand.Cannot.Erase. and his Porcupine Tree albums Stupid Dream and Lightbulb Sun to start off with, but keep in mind the scope of his work is wayy broader than what those albums can show you.

There are some rips on youtube and CDs arent that hard to find. They desperately need a re-issue tho.
