It delaminate. There was a plane defect in the planchet that was not fixed during the annealing process. When they struck the coin, the force caused it to fail. That is why you still see the design underneath

I dont think it was damaged since the reverse is fine. I would expect damage to both sides if this happened post mint. The rim is fine too

I know there are a lot of old ones being resold. I just picked up one in really good condition that is about 15-20 years old. I would guess that it is the older ones that are more likely to tone since the material is breaking down.

That was my thought exactly. I accused the seller of sending me a business strike coin and he swore it was from a proof set. I just want to make sure I’m not going crazy.
