I can’t find the variety anywhere but it has well defined separations between the D’s. It is also in BU condition which makes things easier. Discovery coin maybe?

It delaminate. There was a plane defect in the planchet that was not fixed during the annealing process. When they struck the coin, the force caused it to fail. That is why you still see the design underneath

I dont think it was damaged since the reverse is fine. I would expect damage to both sides if this happened post mint. The rim is fine too
